In DMK’s ‘Game of Thrones’, Stalin is Jon Snow, Daenerys is Rahul Gandhi

Lok Sabha 2019
Drawing a parallel between Cersei and TN CM Edappadi Palaniswami, the video clip accuses EPS of going a step further and joining hands with the ‘whitewalkers’.

The final season of the Game of Thrones is finally here. And the fact that the final season of the hit HBO show coincides with India’s Lok Sabha Election is not lost on many GoT fans in the country – including DMK supporters.   In a video clip released just days before Tamil Nadu goes to polls, DMK supporters have decided to pay tribute to the show by recapping for both fans and the uninitiated, the multiple plotlines of Game of Thrones. Of course, in analogies best understood by an audience in Tamil Nadu. The 2.59-minute video is being shared on WhatsApp. “Before the story begins, several hundred years ago, in the north there were whitewalkers or zombies roaming,” begins the narrator. The video quickly cuts to picture of saffron flags, as the clip compares it to “India’s north – where there is a fascist government promoting caste fanaticism, religious fanaticism, and Hindi fanaticism.” The clip goes on to compare the Night’s Watch, who are building a wall to prevent the whitewalkers from coming, to Dravidian leader and rationalist thinker Periyar – the obvious men dressed in black analogy being drawn. The narrator then moves to the present storyline, comparing the Seven Kingdoms in Game of Thrones to Tamil Nadu. “There’s Robert Baratheon and Ned Stark – both of them are friends. Like MGR and Karunanidhi,” points out the clip and then goes on to liken MGR’s successor Jayalalithaa to Cersei, Robert Baratheon’s wife. Comparing the rivalry of DMK and AIADMK to the clash between Ned Stark and Cersei’s families, the clip then shifts to the death of Ned Stark, or Karunanidhi in DMK’s version of GoT.  Just as the late DMK patriarch, Ned Stark also has a large family and comparisons have been liberally drawn. Like Robb Stark, the eldest son of Ned, who loses his life “after taking many wrong decisions” the narrator points to Karunanidhi’s elder son Alagiri and his now “finished political career.” In this version of Game of Thrones, DMK President MK Stalin is none other than Jon Snow, while Sansa is Kanimozhi and Arya is…wait for it...A Raja, who the narrator argues has emerged a warrior after being acquitted in the 2G case. Daenerys Targaryen, you guessed it, is Congress President Rahul Gandhi, with the whitewalker being Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to the clip. And while the clip informs viewers the Seven Kingdoms will be destroyed if the whitewalkers come, it notes that in Game of Thrones, Cersei chose not to take part in the battle against them. Pushing this reference further, the clip alleges, “But Edappadi Palaniswami has gone one level above and allied with the whitewalkers.” The AIADMK has allied with the BJP for the Lok Sabha Elections. With its final analogy, the clip concludes, “Will Jon Snow and Daenerys save the Seven Kingdoms from whitewalkers? We will know on April 14. But will Stalin be able to save Tamil Nadu from Modi’s whitewalkers? You will have to decide on April 18.” Watch the clip here:

Congress heavyweight EVKS Elangovan has been charged under IPC section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and under Section 4 (Penalty for harassment of woman) of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Women Harassment Act. EVKS Elangovan is contesting for the DMK-Congress alliance in Theni against Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam’s son Raveendranath and AMMK’s Thangatamil Selvan. Similarly, KK Ramesh, an independent candidate contesting in Madurai has one charge under IPC Section 354. Tamil Nadu will vote to elect 39 MPs and 18 MLAs in the Lok Sabha polls and bye-polls to be held on April 18. The silent period kicks in on April 16, 4 hours prior to polling.

With just three days to go before Tamil Nadu casts its vote in the Lok Sabha polls and 18 assembly bye-polls, the Chief Electoral Officer of the state has issued a slew of instructions to political leaders as well as the general public. The Election Commission has warned against the transporting of voters to and from polling booths by leaders or their agents. The instructions will come into effect from 6 pm on April 16, commonly known as the silent period. The EC prohibits election campaigns and public political gatherings during this period, which is 48 hours prior to polling. The statement from Tamil Nadu’s CEO Satyabrata Sahoo also reminded that while polling will take place on April 18 between 7 am and 6 pm across the rest of Tamil Nadu, in Madurai parliamentary constituency, the hours of polling will be from 7 am to 8 pm. This is on account of the annual Chithirai festival which takes place between April 7 and 19. The decision by the EC was announced after residents from the district and politicians complained of the date clash. Keeping with the Representation of the People Act, 1951, the EC has also said that no one shall convene, hold or attend any public meeting or procession in connection with an election during this period. “No one shall display to the public any election matter by means of cinematograph, television or other similar apparatus, like, FM Radios, WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, etc. This includes all electronic form of communication, including SMS and internet.” read the statement. The poll body has also warned against the propagation of 'election matter to the public by holding or by arranging the holding of, any musical concert or any theatrical performance or any other entertainment or amusement with a view to attracting the member of the public thereto.' The violation of these aforementioned provisions is an offence punishable by law and could lead to imprisonment of two years or fine or both, reminded the EC. In an important instruction to party workers, the CEC directed, "All political functionaries, party workers, etc. who have been brought from outside the constituency and who are not voters of the Constituency should leave the constituency immediately after 6.00 P.M. on 16.04.2019" Checks would be carried out at wedding halls, community halls, lodges, and guest houses to find out whether the outsiders have been accommodated in these premises, said the EC. For star campaigners and candidates in the polls, vehicle permits would cease to be valid from 6 pm on April 16. On April 18 ie the date of poll, each candidate is entitled to get a separate permit from the Returning Officer for one vehicle for the candidate's use, one for the use of their poll agent and another for their party workers for each assembly constituency.“No candidate shall be allowed to hire or procure or use vehicle by candidate or his agent for transporting the voters, to and fro from the polling station which is a corrupt practice punishable under Section 133 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.” said the EC. Moreover, the temporary campaign offices of candidates and political parties can be set up only 200 metres outside the polling station. Only two persons are allowed to man the office and they should not allow unnecessary crowd, as per the EC. The EC also reiterated that exit polls have been banned from 7 am on April 11 to 6: 30 pm on May 19.

Fire on in Coonoor hill for over 10 days, lack of resources affect fire-fighting

According to the forest department, the fire was caused by the heat, and has now been contained to almost one acre.
For over 10 days now, Latha*, who works at Bandi Sholai in Coonoor has been witness to a continuous forest fire. The blaze, which is raging at Coonoor Point, is not near residential areas and won’t harm residents, but the duration of the ongoing forest fire has alarmed locals. However, forest officials told TNM that while efforts to put out the fire are underway, a lack of resources has slowed down the process. Speaking to TNM, Latha said, “The fire started two Saturdays back and is still ongoing. We are concerned about the ecology there and can't help but wonder why it is yet to be put out.” “It rages during the day, settles down in the night and grows again the next day,” she added. According to the forest department, the cause of the fire is the heat, and while two acres of land were initially on fire, it has been contained to almost one acre.  “It is ground fire and while it initially seemed like a severe one, it can now be classified as mild. People need not be alarmed,” District Forest Officer Guruswamy Dabbala told TNM. "Since the soil is heated up, it is acting as an agent for the fire," he added. According to Guruswamy, shortage of manpower and water is delaying the process of putting out the fire. “We are short of people to control the fire. There has been a shortage of staff in the forest department. We need 40-50 people to work simultaneously to put out this fire, but we have only 10-20 people. The process is taking a lot of time,” he said. “Moreover, there have been no rains in the area in March, and there is no immediate source of water near the fire. We don't have the machinery to transfer water to high altitudes like hillocks. Water is required to cool down the soil so that the fire can be completely stopped. Otherwise, the fire continues in a mild way, and there is smoke from that,” Guruswamy said. The area which is currently facing the forest fire has a large number of thyme plants which is “ideal for forest fires”. When asked what immediate measures could be taken to put out the fire, Guruswamy said, “If volunteers from the locality help us, we can work with more manpower to put it out.” *Name changed to protect identity

Police are now on the lookout for her son Praveen who fled the scene.
Former AIADMK MP, R Kulandaivelu’s wife Rathinam, was found murdered at her residence in Chennai. The police are now on the lookout for her son Praveen who is absconding. According to reports, the incident took place late on Sunday night over an alleged property dispute. 63-year-old Rathinam had been living alone at her house on 6th Avenue, Besant Nagar, Chennai, since the demise of her husband a few years ago. R Kulandaivelu, a member of the AIADMK, was elected MP from Tiruchengode constituency from 1977 to 1980. A report in The Hindu states that Praveen, the suspect, had studied at a university in London. He later married a Polish woman and settled in London years ago. Preliminary inquiries have revealed that he had returned to Chennai only recently. On the day of the incident, Praveen had allegedly picked up a quarrel with his mother regarding the property. The report states that Rathinam had made a distress call to her daughter Sudha on the fateful day telling her that Praveen had been threatening her. According to the police, even while Sudha was on call with her mother, she could hear Praveen abusing Rathinam. When the call ended abruptly, a worried Sudha alerted her relative who stayed at Thoraipakkam to call upon Rathinam. When the relative reached the house, he found it locked from the outside with bloodstains on the door. Thereafter, he along with neighbours soon alerted the Sashtri Nagar police. When the police reached the spot, they found Rathinam’s body on the floor; her hands and legs tied up and with blood gushing out form a stab injury to the chest. They also found strangulation marks on her neck. Her body was then sent to Government Royapettah Hospital for post-mortem. Police have issued a look-out circular against Praveen to all airports.

The prosecution contended that EVKS Elangovan had spoken ill of the state ministers and made defamatory remarks with regard to the Kollidam bridges at a press meet in August 2018.

Granting interim relief to former Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) President EVKS Elangovan, the Madras High Court on Monday stayed all proceedings against him, before a Special Court for cases against MPs and MLAs. Justice GK Ilanthiraiyan was hearing a plea by Elangovan to quash the criminal defamation proceedings filed against him in connection with his press briefing at Samayapuram in Trichy district on August 26, 2018. In addition to staying all proceedings, the Justice also dispensed with Elangovan’s personal appearance in court. The next date of hearing will be on April 22. According to a report in The Times of India, the prosecution contended that Elangovan had spoken ill of the state ministers and made defamatory remarks with regard to the Kollidam bridges in Sirkazhi taluk of Nagapattinam district in the state. The petition against Elangovan stated that his claim that the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) had initiated inquiry against the ruling party leaders in connection with the frequent damages suffered by the Kollidam bridges was defamatory in nature. Elangovan contended that there was nothing defamatory in his speech against Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisamy and added that the case was foisted on him due to political enmity. Elangovan submitted that a case was registered based on his alleged defamatory speech and the same was pending before the Principal Sessions Judge in Trichy, where he had appeared on February 12. Later, the case was transferred to the Special Court and he appeared before it on March 21. Elangovan, a member of the Congress party, represented the Gobichettipalayam constituency in Tamil Nadu. He was made the president of TNCC by All India Congress Committee Chief (AICC) Sonia Gandhi on October 31, 2014. A few weeks ago, EVKS Elangovan resigned from the post following Congress’s poor show in the May 16 Assembly elections.

Lok Sabha 2019
Over Rs 11 crore was seized from a godown in Vellore, which a DMK functionary later admitted belonged to him.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has said that no order has been issued as yet on the elections in Tamil Nadu’s Vellore parliamentary constituency. However, the ECI was considering cancelling the polls. Two weeks ago, more than Rs 11 crore was seized from a cement godown, money which a local DMK functionary later disclosed belonged to him. The Indian Express reported that the Election Commission has recommended to President Ram Nath Kovind that the Vellore elections be cancelled. The recommendation, the Indian Express reported, will be shared with the Law Minister for its review, and the recommendation will only be given after the Law Minister offers its review. If the President notifies that the election will be cancelled, it will be the first ever Lok Sabha election to be cancelled on the basis of corruption. Background The officials of the Income Tax department conducted searches in the house of DMK Treasurer Duraimurugan in the wee hours of March 30 and then had conducted searches in the cement godown on April 1. The search was conducted based on the information given by the District Electoral Officer of Vellore. More than Rs 11 crore was seized by the officials on April 1. The cash was stacked in cartons, gunny sacks and shopping bags. An FIR was registered against Duraimurugan’s son DM Kathir Anand on April 8 and two of his team members. Kathir is contesting in the Lok Sabha polls from Vellore on a DMK ticket. The FIR also included the names of Poonjolai Srinivasan, a local DMK functionary, and a man called Damodaran who owns the cement godown from where the cash was seized. The FIR stated that Kathir Anand possessed more cash than what he had declared in his election affidavit. Adding that Poonjolai Srinivasan claimed that the money seized from the godown belonged to him, the FIR said, “Poonjolai Srinivasan then contacted the Income Tax authorities and accepted that the amount seized from Damodaran’s properties belonged to him and that it was kept there to distribute to voters.” It also said that seized cash could have been moved to the godown from Duraimurugan’s house when the officers were made to wait outside his house on the night of the raid. On April 9, 2017, just three days before the RK Nagar election was scheduled the Election Commission cancelled it over allegations of bribery by the ruling party. In 2016, the Election Commission cancelled polls to Thanjavur and Aravakurichi over the use of money during the Assembly Elections.

'Sentiment against DMK in our blood, won't align with them': TTV Dhinakaran to TNM

Elections
In an interview with TNM, the AMMK leader and RK Nagar MLA believes that AIADMK cadre will choose his party.
This poll season, Tamil Nadu votes will decide not just its parliamentarians in the Lok Sabha but also as many as 22 MLAs in its state assembly. While the Dravidian majors have allied with the two major national parties, for RK Nagar MLA TTV Dhinakaran, it is a lone battle for survival. The bye-polls to 18 out of 22 constituencies were necessitated by those MLAs supporting him in the trilateral feud between the Mannargudi family, now Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami and current Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam. In an interview with The News Minute, the AMMK leader who is completing the last leg of campaigning in Chennai rules out allying with the DMK and the AIADMK, even in a post-poll scenario. The poll season has been particularly vicious for the leader with the DMK accusing him of being the BJP’s B team and AIADMK alleging that Dhinakaran is the DMK’s B team. “They are both speaking out of fear. AMMK will win in the same way we won in RK Nagar. Even though AIADMK is in the BJP alliance, Stalin is their true B team. Even if the AIADMK's politics is against Stalin, Stalin supported the Chennai-Salem eight-lane expressway when it was introduced by CM Palaniswami.  At the cooperative elections, they had a 60-40 arrangement. AIADMK gives contract works to DMK MLAs. They have an underground alliance.” alleges Dhinakaran, sitting in his campaign vehicle, reminiscent of the late Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s. “I used to travel with Amma. I was a candidate in the elections and became an MP as well. I was in-charge of the polls in Andipatti constituency. She has trained me. I miss the fact that Amma is not there and that my aunt is in Bengaluru (VK Sasikala, close aide of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa is serving prison time for her involvement in the Disproportionate Assets case).” Dhinakaran recounts, waving to cadre greeting him with the title ‘Makkal Selvan’ or ‘people’s treasured one.’ So how is campaign season for his first Lok Sabha polls without the two women who were at the helm of affairs? “What I have learnt from them is naturally there. This is a field where I have 30 years of experience. It's all going smooth.” he says, exuding confidence. Many in Dhinakaran’s party have alleged that there is a concerted campaign to not provide their leader air time on Tamil television channels. But his message, he says, has been heard by the people. Reiterating the position that true AIADMK supporters will vote for AMMK, he says, "95 percent of true AIADMK supporters are already in the AMMK. The remaining five percent who are still in the AIADMK thinking it is Amma's government and for the sake of the two leaves symbol are disillusioned with their alliance partners. So they too will vote for us." he asserts. Slamming the AIADMK’s alliace partners for Lok Sabha 2019, Dhinakaran refers to the PMK's opposition to build a memorial for late Chief Minister Jayalalithaa at the Marina, the DMDK's opposition to hang a portrait of Jayalalithaa in the state assembly and the BJP, whom Jayalalithaa directly opposed in the 2014 General Elections. When asked if he would end up splitting both DMK and AIADMK votes this time around, Dhinakaran shoots back, “Did votes get split in RK Nagar? We will be the winners. The contest is for second place.” In the December 2017 RK Nagar bye-polls, Dhinakaran emerged victorious by a margin of over 40,000 votes. In an embarrassing loss, the DMK lost its deposit while the AIADMK finished second. On Stalin's confidence that the DMK would form the government once all 22 pending bye-elections are conducted, Dhinakaran says that Stalin may only win a couple of seats that the AMMK fails to secure. When pressed on if MLAs supporting Dhinakaran would be open to a post poll alliance, Dhinakaran understandably takes a moment to gather his thoughts and bust the theory doing the rounds among political circles."The sentiment against the DMK is in our blood. They are simply saying these things. We can neither ally with the DMK nor the traitors (Edappadi Palaniswami and O Panneerselvam-led AIADMK). Just like 1972, when Puratchi Thalaivar started the party, our cadres have created a movement. AMMK will come to power in Tamil Nadu as a great force.” he states. When asked about how important the poll season is for the survival of his year-old party, a defensive Dhinakaran says that the ones fighting for survival are the DMK and the AIADMK. "We will win by a big margin. DMK and AIADMK are the ones fighting for second place. So they are the ones fighting to survive.” he signs off. Read: Who is afraid of TTV Dhinakaran?

In TN’s Kongu industrial belt, GST and demonetisation are issues this election

Lok Sabha 2019
TNM speaks to industrial representatives from Coimbatore, Tiruppur and Pollachi ahead of the April 18 election.
With its picturesque locations and favourable living conditions, the Kongu belt in Tamil Nadu contributes significantly to the state’s GDP. While Coimbatore is known for its mechanical engineering-related industries, Pollachi is known for its coconut production and coir industries. Tiruppur is one of India’s garment hubs, contributing to around 45% of the country’s total garment exports. So what are the issues in the Kongu belt this election? TNM spoke to a few industrial representatives to find out.   Coimbatore Nestled between the mighty Western Ghats on the border of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, Coimbatore is a major hub for automotive and machine spare parts, pump sets and textiles in south India. Known for their contribution to industrial growth in Tamil Nadu, the people of Coimbatore have, over the years, elected politicians irrespective of party affiliations. The upcoming polls is largely a fight between two veteran politicians. While the AIADMK alliance is fielding CP Radhakrishnan of the BJP, a two-time MP from Coimbatore and currently the Chairman of the Coir Board, the DMK-Congress combine has put up CPI(M) veteran PR Natarajan. PR Natarajan was previously elected as MP from Coimbatore in 2009. Maniraj, a member of the Coimbatore Pump Manufacturers Association (COPMA) says that though it does not have any particular political leaning, this time the situation is different. “Last time we supported Modi since we had high hopes on him. This time around, contrary to our expectations, the Central government has brought in laws that place enormous stress on our industry,” he begins. Describing how Goods and Services Tax (GST), which was introduced in 2017 damaged their livelihoods, Maniraj says that the tax rates thrust on their line of work was illogical. “The GST for buying pump sets and spare parts is 18% and for selling the tax is 12%. How is this even logical?” he asks pointing out that the 6% difference goes out from their pockets.  Explaining that Coimbatore has a lot of small-scale workshops, he says that none in their 70,000-unit strong association expected to be burdened with such a high GST rate. “All of us who supported Modi last time are very angry with him now,” Maniraj says. Maniraj says that their main demand is to reduce GST levy to 5%. He notes that the association tried to raise their problems with the Centre since 2017 but were unsuccessful.  “CP Radhakrishnan is now saying the first signature by Modi as Prime Minister will be to reduce the GST levy to 5%. But our question is why didn’t they do it all this time?” Maniraj asks. Demonetisation is another poll issue for James, who owns a machine workshop in Coimbatore and is a member of the Tamil Nadu Association for Cottage and Tiny Entrepreneurs. “Demonetisation actually hit us hard because our business works on cash-and- carry format. We also pay off our workers on a daily basis. So, when the government put a restriction on withdrawing our own money, we suffered a lot. A good number of our members have shut down their business because they were not able to bear the impact of demonetization,” he says. James notes that while CPI(M)’s PR Natarajan had called representatives of the association for a meeting and promised to bring down GST rates, BJP’s Radhakrishnan had allegedly not taken their representations.   Prabhu, a member of the Indian Texpreneurs Federation, which is a collective of 540 medium and large scale textile companies in the western region of Tamil Nadu, however, says that the fight in Coimbatore is tough. “Almost both the parties are giving similar promises in their manifestoes and campaigns. Although, there is no wave like the last time here. I don’t think people even see this as a national issue. People are more focused on what the local issues are and what the MPs can do for them in their constituency,” he says. Pollachi Pollachi is a small town situated 40 kilometers away from Coimbatore. Coconut and paddy cultivation and coir industries are the major occupation of people here. The town recently grabbed the headlines for a sexual assault and extortion racket that took place in Pollachi. AIADMK is fielding sitting MP C Mahendran in the constituency while K Shanmugasundaram is the DMK candidate. Speaking to TNM, Padmanabhan, a coconut farmer sheds light on how the farmers see this election. “Price per kilogram of copra was increased to Rs 95 per kg in the last five years. We have never got such a high price for copra before,” he says. Adding that the farmers are now concerned about the impending water crisis in the region, Padmanabhan says that all eyes are now on the Anamalaiyar-Nallaar project. “For areas dependent on water from the Parambikulam-Aliyar project (PAP), the Anamalaiyar-Nallaar project will be of great help. Our CM has announced it, it would be great if he implements it immediately,” he adds. Heaping praises on AIADMK’s C Mahendran, Padmanabhan says that the MP is an approachable person and understands the plight of the coconut farmers in the region. “As a candidate, Mahendran is doing good work. But we really wish his party also supports him. Only if that happens we can bring a coconut farmers welfare board,” Padmanabhan adds. He, however, notes that the DMK candidate is not a prominent face in the region. Suresh*, who owns a coir manufacturing unit in Pollachi also echoes the same beliefs. “Mahendran’s main advantage as an MP is that he is very approachable. Whether the problem we are meeting him for is solvable or not is a different thing altogether, but he is open to meeting people and listening to grievances,” he says. Pointing out that CP Radhakrishnan, the Coimbatore BJP candidate has also been supportive of the industry, Suresh says that allying with BJP is also seen as a positive for AIADMK in this region by coir industry insiders. “If AIADMK loses in Pollachi, it would only because of the way they have handled the Pollachi sexual assault case. That could be the only reason if at all AIADMK loses in Pollachi. Except for that Mahendran is a very good candidate,” he says. Tiruppur Tiruppur, the knitwear hub in India, was one of the worst-hit regions due to demonetisation in 2016 and later because of GST. Employing more than 7 lakh people, Tiruppur’s output value has crossed Rs 45,000 crore annually but has been facing challenges in expanding their exports following the implementation of GST. Though the city suffered badly due to the economic reforms introduced in the last five years, the industrialists in the city remain divided in their opinion of a victor in the general elections. “I don’t think a clear picture is there this election, it feels confused because there are no tall leaders in both the major political parties (DMK and AIADMK). Both the parties contesting here in Tiruppur have promised to attend to our longstanding demand of setting up a knitwear board at the Centre with headquarters in Tiruppur,” says Ramesh*, a garment export company owner based out of Tiruppur. Adding that arithmetically it seems as if the AIADMK combine has a clear lead, Ramesh says that the impact of the last five years is still visible in the garment city. “But how far it will have an impact on the ground is not clear,” he says. Former MLA MSM Anandan is contesting in Tiruppur on an AIADMK ticket while CPI is fielding K Subbarayan in the DMK-Congress alliance. K Subbarayan is a two-time MLA from Tiruppur and a former MP from Coimbatore. *name changed on request.

In an attempt to ensure that private companies follow the law, Tamil Nadu government’s Labour Department has set up a hotline to report on companies that force employees to work on poll day. Poll day ie Thursday, April 18 in Tamil Nadu, is a holiday. However, many private sector employees had complained that their employers expected them to work on the day. “As per Section 135B of the Representation of People Act(1951), we request that all workers, daily wage labourers, temporary workers and employees working in all companies including industries and trading companies, eateries, NGOs, shops, factories, public sector companies, private companies, information technology companies(IT/ ITES/ BPO) be granted one day’s leave with pay on polling day(Thursday, April 18) in order to enable them to vote.” requested a statement from the Commissioner of Labour, R Nandagopal. Over a week ago, the Union of IT and ITes Employees (UNITE) had written to the Election Commission of India to issue a notification to all private companies in Tamil Nadu to mandate compulsory holiday on April 18. UNITE had alleged that not all private companies allow their employees to take off from work. They had also requested the Election Commission to instruct IT/ITes companies and its employers’ body NASSCOM to provide flexible leave for inter-state migrant employees on polling date. In order to make sure that the order is implemented, they had requested the EC to form squads to monitor the implementation of holiday and to take stringent action against violators. “What is there in Tamil Nadu now is not Anna DMK (AIADMK). It is Modi MK. Even one vote put for AIADMK is a vote put for Modi,” said Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu in Chennai. He was addressing reporters at the DMK headquarters on Tuesday when he went all guns blazing against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Starting off his speech in Tamil, he said that the relationship between the Tamil and Telugu people is like brothers. “A hundred farmers protested in Jantar mantar for 100 days, did Modi pay attention? Did he intervene in Jallikattu issue?” he asked.   Continuing his speech in Tamil, Naidu said that leaders like Periyar, former chief ministers MG Ramachandran and Annadurai were supportive of the people when they faced difficulties. “Modi must learn from them. Kalaignar is a leader praised by the world. Stalin is like that now. People want to see Stalin as the Chief Minister,” he said. Urging the people of Tamil Nadu to vote against Narendra Modi, Chandrababu Naidu said that Modi has betrayed the nation and hence every vote polled for the ruling AIADMK will be a vote in support of Narendra Modi. Stating that all Income Tax raids are happening at the properties related to opposition parties, he asked if there were any I-T raids in BJP-ruled states. “This is the costliest election I am seeing in my lifetime. BJP is spending tons and tons of money and all opposition parties are being raided and they are creating psychological fear,” he said. “It is in the interest of the nation and not for me, my election is over. To save democracy, to protect democracy, I am moving everywhere. We are all – all political parties – working together to protect democracy,” he said. Tugging at the Tamil Pride and the history of the Dravidian movement in the state, Naidu alleged that Modi is looking to impose a monoculture in Tamil Nadu.

Over Rs 11 crore was seized from a godown in Vellore, which, a DMK functionary later told the police, was kept for distribution to voters.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has cancelled the elections in Vellore Parliamentary constituency in Tamil Nadu. Vellore becomes the first constituency in India where a Lok Sabha election has been cancelled because of cash for votes. The ECI made the announcement on Tuesday based on a report submitted by the Income Tax department on the cash seized in Vellore. Two weeks ago, more than Rs 11 crore was seized from a cement godown, money which a local DMK functionary later disclosed belonged to him. The EC had written to the President, recommending a cancellation. The President in turn had asked the Law Ministry for its opinion. On Tuesday evening, the President gave his assent to cancel the election in Vellore. Background The officials of the Income Tax department conducted searches in the house of DMK Treasurer Duraimurugan in the wee hours of March 30 and then conducted searches in the cement godown on April 1. The search was conducted based on information given by the District Electoral Officer of Vellore. Adding that Poonjolai Srinivasan claimed that the money seized from the godown belonged to him, the FIR said, “Poonjolai Srinivasan then contacted the Income Tax authorities and accepted that the amount seized from Damodaran’s properties belonged to him and that it was kept there to distribute to voters.” It also said that the seized cash could have been moved to the godown from Duraimurugan’s house when the officers were made to wait outside his house on the night of the raid. On April 9, 2017, just three days before the RK Nagar election was scheduled the Election Commission cancelled it over allegations of bribery by the ruling party. In 2016, the Election Commission cancelled polls to Thanjavur and Aravakurichi over the use of money during the Assembly Elections.

Lok Sabha 2019
The Income Tax raids at DMK candidate Kanimozhi’s residence comes with just over a day to go for the Lok Sabha Elections.
Income tax sleuths are currently searching the residence of DMK's Thoothukudi candidate Kanimozhi. A team of 10 officials are currently at her residence in Thoothukudi. The raid at Kanimozhi's house comes almost immediately after the Election Commission announced that the Lok Sabha election to Vellore was being cancelled. It also comes with just over a day to go for the polls. The residence where the search is ongoing has been rented by Kanimozhi ahead of her campaign in the district. According to reports, flying squads also conducted raids at Thoothukudi MLA and DMK Secretary Geetha Jeevan's residence.  DMK chief MK Stalin, however, hit out at the Election Commission over the searches and said, "Tamiliasai Soundarrajan has several crores of money at her residence. Why no raids at her place? Despite a proper complaint to election commission no action has been taken. I call for reforms in election commission in the future.” He also alleged, “Prime Minsiter Narendra Modi is using the Election Commission to tarnish the reputation of the DMK." There have been multiple raids by I-T Department since the Lok Sabha Election was announced with searches taking place in Karnataka and Andhra. The election to the Vellore constituency was cancelled following seizure of Rs 11 crore from the godown of a man close to a DMK functionary. According to an FIR filed in the case, the DMK functionary had admitted that the money belonged to him. The IT department says it seized notes which explained in which ward the money would be distributed in. Tamil Nadu goes to polls on April 18, with Elections to be held in 38 parliamentary constituencies and 18 Assembly seats.

Shots were fired in the air in Theni’s Andipatti on Tuesday after AMMK cadre allegedly refused to let police officials discharge their duty.  Speaking to TNM, Andipatti DSP Seenivasan said that the flying squad got a tip-off that cash was being hoarded by AMMK party members with the intention to bribe voters ahead of the April 18 Lok Sabha Election.  “When we reached, 4 of the AMMK party members refused to let us in. Four rounds were fired in the air to control the situation.” The DSP said four persons have been detained while flying squad members are now counting the cash that has been seized. The Andipatti Assembly constituency is also set for bye-polls on April 18, along with the Lok Sabha Elections. Former AIADMK MLA Thanga Tamilchelvan was disqualified after he, along with 17 of his colleagues, extended support to current RK Nagar MLA and AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran. This time around, however, the MLA is contesting in the Theni Lok Sabha constituency while the AMMK candidate for Andipatti is R Jayakumar. The latest incident comes even as Income Tax raids take place at DMK candidate for Thoothukudi Kanimozhi’s residence in Thoothukudi. It also comes after the Lok Sabha Elections to the Vellore parliamentary seat was cancelled by the Election Commission after cash was seized from DMK candidate Kathir Anand’s residence.  DMK President MK Stalin has accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of using the Election Commission to tarnish the reputation of the DMK. Tamil Nadu will see Lok Sabha Elections in 38 out of 39 constituencies with bye-elections scheduled for 18 out of the 22 constituencies on April 18. The remaining four Assembly seats will see bye-polls on May 19. The results will be announced on May 23.

Controversy
MK Stalin demanded to know why members of the Opposition party are being targeted when there are charges against AIADMK and BJP leaders as well.
DMK Working President MK Stalin lashed out at the Centre, accusing it of “murdering democracy” as a team of 10 Income Tax officials swooped down on the residence of his sister and the DMK’s Thoothukudi candidate Kanimozhi on Tuesday evening. He demanded to know why members of the Opposition party are being targeted when there are charges against AIADMK and BJP leaders as well. He added that this was an indication that the AIADMK and BJP are afraid of failure. "It's a murder of democracy. In Theni, where Deputy CM O Paneerselvam's son Ravindranath is contesting from, there is proof that Rs 1,000 has been given to each voter. Has action been taken against him? Narendra Modi is using the Election Commission against the DMK. What happened to the raids at minister Velumani's benami house? No one knows. Crores and crores of rupees are kept in Tamilisai Soundararajan's residence, why no raids there? Modi is using the I-T, CBI, judiciary and now the Election Commission to interfere in elections. They want to somehow ruin these elections,” MK Stalin said to the reporters in Trichy. Alleging that only Opposition leaders are being targeted in the country, Stalin also called for reforms in the Election Commission. "Modi is using the I-T, CBI, judiciary and now the Election Commission to interfere in elections. They want to somehow ruin these elections,” Stalin added. The searches at Kanimozhi’s residence came shortly after the Election Commission announced that the Lok Sabha election to Vellore has been cancelled and with just over a day to go for the polls. The residence where the searches happened has been rented by Kanimozhi ahead of her campaign in the district. As the searches were on, DMK supporters gathered at Kanimozhi’s residence and staged protests against the Central government. Also read: Income Tax searches at Kanimozhi's residence in Thoothukudi

Speaking to media persons outside her residence, Kanimozhi confirmed that the search party found nothing.
Almost two hours after sleuths of the Income Tax Department descended on the residence of DMK Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi in Thoothukudi, they have stated that it was a false alarm. According to IT Department sources, the officials arrived for a 'check' at the residence late on Tuesday, but it turned out to be a false tip. Kanimozhi is contesting the Lok Sabha polls from the Thoothukudi parliamentary constituency. She is up against the BJP's Tamil Nadu State President Tamilisai Soundararajan. Speaking to TNM, sources in the IT Department said that it was not a raid, but only a search. "This was a check. The check was carried out based on orders from the district collector. Nothing was found." Speaking to media persons outside her residence, Kanimozhi herself confirmed that the search party found nothing. However she alleged that they did not show her a search warrant or a copy of the complaint. According to reports, the IT Department was informed of an unspecified amount of cash currency in the first floor of her home. But the department has not revealed who gave the tip off, which turned out to be wrong. The residence where the search is ongoing has been rented by Kanimozhi ahead of her campaign in the district.

“DMK will face anything, we are not afraid of this,” said DMK candidate for Thoothukudi parliamentary constituency Kanimozhi on Tuesday evening just after Income Tax officials raided her residence. Speaking to reporters at 10.44pm on Tuesday, Kanimozhi said, “Income Tax officers reached my house around 8.30 pm. We cooperated with them fully. I asked them if they had the necessary permissions, and they did not give me a proper response.” The DMK leader said that she went on to ask if the I-T officials had the required documents to search her premises. “They did not have it but I allowed them to go on. When I asked them who they wanted to meet, they said ‘candidate, candidate’. This means they wanted to target me as I am the candidate of the DMK alliance,” she said. Kanimozhi also said, “They didn't show me the complaint. They said there was a complaint here. They said nothing was there. This is to bring bad name to the DMK.” Pointing out that the raids against her were not the first against a DMK leader in Thoothukudi, Kanimozhi earlier in April. “Two times Anitha Radhakrishnan (DMK’s Thoothukudi South District Secretary) has been raided. They have searched without any basis. They have unfairly stopped elections in Vellore. They were probably hoping to find something here and use that as a reason to cancel polls in Thoothukudi too. But they were unsuccessful,” she alleged. Alleging that the Election Commission and Income Tax Depart are in an alliance with Modi, Kanimozhi said, “They are attempting to intimidate opposition parties.” She added, “Stalin has asked and I am also asking are they ready to search Tamilisai?” Kanimozhi is the candidate for the DMK-led alliance in Tamil Nadu and is up against BJP State President Tamilisai Soundararajan, who is the AIADMK-led alliance’s candidate. Tamil Nadu goes to polls on April 18. After the election to the Vellore seat was cancelled owing to cash seizures from the residence of a DMK candidate, Lok Sabha polls will be held only in 38 out of 39 constituencies. Bye-elections will be held to 18 Assembly seats simultaneously on Thursday. Polls to 4 more Assembly constituencies will be held on May 19. Results will be announced on May 23.

Shortly after the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the cancellation of elections in the Vellore Lok Sabha constituency, DMK Treasurer Duraimurugan has reacted, calling the move a 'murder of democracy.' Over three weeks earlier, the DMK leader's home in Vellore was raided by the Income Tax Department over suspicions of cash distribution to voters in the district. A day later, over Rs 15 crore was seized from a cement godown, the money belonging to a local DMK functionary Poonjolai Srinivasan. Speaking to Puthiya Thalaimurai, the DMK leader said, "This is a murder of democracy. This is a move to intimidate opposition parties." He added that the move is also an opportunity for the people to put an end to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government. On Tuesday, the EC cancelled elections in Vellore parliamentary constituency shortly after 7 pm. Tamil Nadu's Chief Electoral Officer had submitted a report to the EC on April 14, following which the poll body was 'fully satisfied' that the polls in Vellore have been 'seriously vitated on account of unlawful activities of certain candidates and some members/ workers of the political party.' An FIR was filed against Duraimurugan’s son Kathir Anand, who was also the DMK’s candidate for the Lok Sabha from the constituency. The FIR, dated April 8, also names of Poonjolai Srinivasan, a local DMK functionary, and a man called Damodaran who owns the cement godown from where the cash was seized. According to the report, Poonjolai Srinivasan had admitted that the seized cash belonged to him and that it was intended for distribution to voters. In the wake of search and seizure, DMK President MK Stalin had alleged that the ulterior motive of the government was to postpone the Gudiyattam and Ambur bye-polls- the two assembly segments that fall under the Vellore Lok Sabha seat. It may also be noted that in the run up to the Lok Sabha polls, Tamil Nadu has witnessed the highest amount of cash seizures in India.

Shots had been fired on Tuesday evening after AMMK members refused to allow flying squad members inside their office.
Unaccounted cash worth nearly Rs 1.48 crore has been recovered from RK Nagar MLA TTV Dhinakaran’s Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam(AMMK) office in Theni district, Tamil Nadu. A late night raid, which created commotion after shots were fired to ‘control the situation’, has recovered packets and envelopes meant for distribution to voters as bribe. According to a statement from the Director General of Income Tax (Investigation), the raid, which came to an end at 5: 30 am on Wednesday, discovered 94 packets and envelopes with ward numbers and numbers of voters, with Rs 300 set aside per voter. The wards found labelled on the packets and envelopes belong to the Andipatti assembly segment. The Andipatti assembly constituency is set for bye-polls on April 18, along with the Lok Sabha elections. Former AIADMK MLA Thanga Tamilchelvan was disqualified after he, along with 17 of his colleagues, extended support to AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran. R Jayakumar is the party's candidate this time around. AMMK's Andipatti candidate, however, has alleged that the money belongs to AIADMK. As per the sworn statement of one of the party workers present at the premises, Rs 2 crore in cash had been brought for distribution to voters in the Andipatti panchayat union area on Tuesday. The statement said that a group of party workers ‘overpowered’ the members of the flying squad. Some party workers ran away with a few cash packets, according to the police. The remaining amount was seized. Along with the cash packets, a postal ballot paper, with its vote marked for the AMMK candidate in the Andipatti assembly bye-polls, was also found. While the district Collector and SP supervised the security arrangements, an FIR has been registered in the case. The raid which began shortly after 9 pm in Theni’s Andipatti shocked the state after police opened fire. According to the police, an election flying squad got a tip-off that cash was being hoarded by AMMK party members with the intention to bribe voters ahead of the April 18 Lok Sabha Election. However, upon reaching the office, the AMMK workers did not allow the officials to enter the premises. Police fired four rounds in the air "in order to control the situation."

Temperatures have been soaring across several parts of the state over the last week.

In a big sigh of relief for the scorching interior districts in Tamil Nadu, the Met Department has predicted heavy rainfall over isolated places. This includes Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Namakkal, Nilgiris, Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Erode, Karur, Tiruchirapalli, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Sivagangai, Virudhunagar, Theni, Dindigul, Madurai districts. Heavy rain is expected in these areas on Thursday. However, the simmering temperatures will not spare Chennai as the city is expected to continue at between 27 degree celsius (minimum) and 36 degree celsius (maximum). According to the Times of India, a wind discontinuity from south interior Karnataka to Comorin area across interior Tamil Nadu will be responsible for bringing light to moderate rain at isolated places over Tamil Nadu between Wednesday and Saturday. Thunderstorms with gusty winds and lightning are also likely to occur at isolated places over Tamil Nadu during this period. According to one report in Skymet Weather, Tamil Nadu has remained 89 percent deficient in terms of rains. But the state will be witness to rains thanks to "wind discontinuity or Interior Peninsular trough from East or Central to the southern parts." The month of April is expected to bring 42 mm of rains to the state while 68 mm rainfall is expected in May. According to ToI, six districts -- Dharmapuri, Karur, Madurai, Namakkal, Trichy, Tiruttani and Vellore -- recorded temperatures soaring above 40 degree celsius. As for Chennai, the sky condition is likely to be partly cloudy during the morning hours, and mainly clear thereafter. Puducherry may also witness heavy rainfall on Thursday.
