Even as pro-Jalikkattu protests in Tamil Nadu took a violent turn on Monday, several policemen who spoke to TNM under the condition of anonymity, claimed that top officers from the department had attempted to convince agitators to disperse. The officers had met with little success.
One police officer in Trichy, however, managed to capture the protesters’ attention and convinced several of them to stop the agitation as they have achieved what they set out to do. And now, he is a social media star.
A video doing the rounds shows Deputy Commissioner Mayil Vaganam addressing a group of young agitators. The officer says, “Those who have trust in my word and want to respect the support extended by the police to this protest can leave knowing it has been successful.”
The officer also echoes statements made by the Chennai police commissioner about ‘anti-social elements’ joining the protest. “Youngsters should not become responsible for this protest taking an ugly turn. Several groups and individuals are trying to exploit this situation. Don’t allow this,” he says. “We have fought with you, supported this protest, sat in this heat, borne the cold, got wet in the rain and haven’t had even as much to eat as you did. If you respect our efforts you will leave,” the officer says in his emotional appeal.
The video was captioned as ‘The final words of DC Mayil Vaganam sir. Protests in Trichy’. Towards the end of the video, the officer is seen walking away swiftly, even as several protesters get up, reportedly ready to leave.
