The National Investigation Agency arrested three more youth on Tuesday who are suspected to have ISIS links. It had arrested five youth on Monday and interrogated them, according to The New Indian Express.

Investigations revealed that six of them were working as medical representatives in Coimbatore. The suspects became good friends during a business meet, according to The Times of India.

Many documents have been seized from the suspects. The NIA also interrogated a computer service engineer who helped the group solve issues with their laptops.

The youths had communication with ISIS module members through Facebook and WhatsApp, sources told TNIE.

Abu Basheer had informed the police about four youth - Nawas, a college student, Uvasi Rahman, Niwas Khan and Safiyullah. Based on the information from these youth, Nazar, Wahib and Nabeel from GM Nagar were arrested on Tuesday. After this, a computer engineer was also questioned.

The NIA suspects that Abu Basheer had tried to brainwash the youth to join the ISIS module in the beginning, but the youth were not interested. Police are also looking for electronic evidence to track the conversations.

The NIA is expected to take three more people into custody and interrogate them about the ISIS links. The eight youth were sent back to their homes on Tuesday but have been asked to return on Wednesday morning for further investigation.

A gang of four is reported to have brutally attacked and killed a known history-sheeter and president of the BJP’s youth wing in Villupuram on Tuesday when he was returning from the court after appearing in a criminal case against him, reports The New Indian Express.

Thirty-two-year-old Janarthanan, aka Jana, had joined the party recently and also filed nominations for the local body elections. As he was returning from the court with two friends, a gang hurled petrol bombs at them. An injured Jana was then hacked to death by the gang.

While one of his friends was also injured in the attack, the other person escaped without any major injuries and has been detained for questioning by the police.

Jana lived in Kuliyapalayam village near Auroville in Puducherry and there are 30 cases against him in Puducherry and Villupruam, reports TNIE.

Jana’s death comes following a series of murders and attacks among various gang leaders in that area.

While Jana’s death is believed to have been related to the gang wars, there have been several attacks on leaders of Hindu right-wing groups and parties in Tamil Nadu recently.

An RSS member, R Narahari, was waylaid and attacked by a gang in Chennai on Tuesday.

Last month, Coimbatore erupted in fury and witnessed communal violence after a member of the Hindu Munnani was hacked to death by unknown assailants.

From Dasara to school projects, Chennai's golu-maker creates dolls for all occasions

$

With Dasara around the corner, golu makers are busy completing orders for the miniature dolls. For Chennai-based golu-maker Geetha Kumari too, Dasara is a busy time because of the 100 odd orders she gets per month in the time preceding it. But given the Cauvery crisis and the tension between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, things have been a little difficult.

Geetha gets the wood she uses to make heads of the dolls from Mysore and nearby areas in Karnataka. "But with vehicles not being allowed to cross the border, courier services were also hit. Hence I couldn't get the 'aala maram' (the wood she uses)," she says. But thankfully, she had some of it stocked up from about six months ago, which is why she is able to deliver the orders she received this festive season.

Geetha learnt doll-making in Bengaluru between 1982-83. "I was always interested in doll making and drawing. So I started learning how to make dolls from a woman called Parvathamma," Geetha recalls. Later, she moved to Chennai on Parvathamma's encouragement. After taking only private orders for over a decade, she started supplying dolls to stores like Khadi and Poompuhar in 1998, and continues to do so.

In over two decades that she has been making golus, Geetha has seen demands and tastes change. She says that while making and displaying golus was traditionally a Tamil Brahmin practice, it is no longer so. And people are no longer looking for golus of gods and goddesses exclusively.

A common demand her customers make is for paired dolls: wedding and cultural pairs are commonly requested. "Once I had a customer from the US who took many dolls - all dressed up in different attires like Punjabi, Kashmiri, Gujarati - for teaching their kids about Indian culture back in the US," she informs.

Apart from the US, Geetha has also received orders from Singapore, Malaysia and Canada. Most of these people place the orders in advance and collect it from her when they visit India. She also gets orders from Bengaluru and cities in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, but the bulk of her orders come from Chennai.

Another thing that's become common these days is people asking for entire scenes and stories to be created with her miniature dolls. "Many school children approach me for projects. Sometimes they want a scene from the Ramayana picturised with dolls. I've even had people come and tell me they want scenes which depict "women empowerment" with dolls," she says.

And while making dolls and golus is something Geetha is passionate about, the 50-year-old says that it takes time to put the materials and the dolls together, even with the help of 5-6 women all of who are between 40-60 years of age. It takes at least two days for making one doll and longer for bigger projects, she says Why is it so time consuming? Because Geetha makes the dolls from scratch.

"First you make the skeleton of the doll with wire according to the size specifications. Then I use cotton to make the mass of their body, later shaping it by tying thread. Then come the head, which we paint and the clothes, which I design and stitch depending on the requirements of the customers," Geetha says.

Geetha remains passionate about making golus and maintains that the only thing which will stop her from making dolls is her health. "So far I don't have an eyesight problem. I intend to keep making dolls till my health permits," she asserts.

Her golus range from 4-inches to 6-inches to 12-inches in height. While the smaller ones are priced at Rs 100, the bigger ones at 150. The price of the scenes depends on the number of dolls.

Actor Athithi suicide attempt: Is misogyny hurting women in South Indian film industries?

$

Actor Athithi from Kerala, also known as Athira Santosh, recently attempted suicide by consuming poison. She has alleged that she took the extreme step because of the sexual harassment she faced at the hands of the director of Selva Kannan.

Athithi was set to make her Kollywood debut in “Nedunalvaadai”. However, according to reports, she has lodged a police complaint stating that the director of the film, Selva Kannan, had assaulted her because she refused to reciprocate his “love”.

Athithi is said to have complained to the Nadigar Sangam about the harassment but the organisation reportedly expressed its helplessness in the issue. However, after her suicide attempt, actor Vishal, who is the Secretary General of Nadigar Sangam, visited her at hospital. Vishal did not take The News Minute’s calls for his response on the issue.

Director Selva Kannan has rubbished Athithi’s allegations.

This is not the first time that a woman actor has approached the Nadigar Sangam regarding the behaviour of a director. Three years ago, another actor from Kerala, Nazriya, had complained against director Sargunam for using a body double of her to shoot scenes that the actor had said she was not comfortable doing. Nazriya had stated that the director had done this without her knowledge.

Although Nazriya had posted a screenshot of the objectionable scene on her Facebook page and stated that she was going to file a complaint against the director for going against contractual agreements, she later withdrew the complaint and even apologized to Sargunam.

A few days ago, “Pink” star Taapsee Pannu, who began her career in South Indian films, expressed her unhappiness with the South Indian film industries’ treatment of women. Taapsee alleged that she was asked to dub her lines “differently” and when she didn’t want to, somebody else did it anyway. She also stated that she faced issues with remuneration, while her male co-stars never had such problems.

There has been widespread speculation over when the TN CM will be discharged from the hospital.
PTI
It’s been nearly two weeks since Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa was admitted to Apollo Hospital in Chennai.  While hundreds of her supporters pray for her speedy recovery, there has been widespread speculation over when Jayalalithaa will be discharged from the hospital. This despite the health bulletin on Tuesday stating that “the same line of treatment is being continued” and that the CM has been advised further stay at the hospital. Such conjectures have also gained further ground following rumours that her residence at Poes Garden and Siruthavur are being readied for her. But a source in the CM office has denied the rumours. "She is recovering as the doctors too have been telling the media. There has been no advice from the doctors to shift her home now. We are waiting for instructions," said the source. Meanwhile, with her entire cabinet and several MPs and MLAs as well as top bureaucrats camping at Apollo Hospital in Chennai for the last fortnight, instructions were issued to leaders to return to their respective constituencies and resume work. This after questions were raised in the media over governance slowing down in Tamil Nadu and over the leadership vacuum in the ruling party. Read: Amid speculation on Jaya's health, media questions leadership vacuum in AIADMK While the AIADMK had, in 2001 and in 2014, nominated Finance Minister O Panneerselvam as stand-in Chief Minister following Jayalalithaa’s conviction in the TANSI case and the DA case respectively, the ruling party denies reports of appointing a Deputy Chief Minister presently.  Speaking to The News Minute, a senior AIADMK leader said, "The media reports on a Deputy Chief Minister being appointed is purely speculative. Why should we discuss a deputy CM when we are sure that she would get discharged sooner than later and resume power?"  Jayalalithaa was admitted to Apollo Hospital late on September 22 with “a fever and dehydration”. A health bulletin released by the hospital on Monday stated that she was being treated for an infection and “the treatment plan includes appropriate antibiotics, respiratory support and other allied clinical measures”. Dr Richard Beale from London, who wass called in to consult with the team of doctors treating the Chief Minister, has since returned to England.

Last week Apollo Hospitals obtained expert opinion from Dr Richard Beale, a consultant from London
Nearly two weeks after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa was admitted at the Apollo Hospital in Chennai, three doctors from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi were flown into the city for further treatment. Sources have told The News Minute that pulmonologist Dr GC Khilnani, anaesthetist Dr Anjan Trikha and cardiologist Dr Nitish Naik, who was the personal phyisician of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, are the experts who will assist the team of doctors at Apollo Hospital. While one of the doctors flew in from New Delhi on Wednesday, the other two arrived in Chennai on Thursday. The latest developments come even as Tuesday’s health bulletin on the Chief Minister stated that Jayalalithaa “continues to improve” and that the same line of treatment is being continued. The last bulletin released by the hospital also stated that she was under “close observation” by a team of doctors. Last week, Dr Richard Beale, a consultant in intensive care medicine from the Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in London was flown in on September 30 to assess the Chief Minister’s condition. Dr Beale, whose area of expertise includes acute lung injury, sepsis and multi-organ failure, had a detailed discussion with the expert group of doctors treating her. The current treatment plan and other allied clinical measures were initiated based on the discussion which Jayalalithaa’s team of doctors had with Dr Beale. The London doctor, however, returned to England two days later.   Jayalalithaa was admitted to Apollo Hospital late on September 22 with “a fever and dehydration”. A health bulletin released by the hospital on Monday stated that she was being treated for an infection and “the treatment plan includes appropriate antibiotics, respiratory support and other allied clinical measures”.

He said that Athithi has been complaining of harassment for a long time.
Actor Athithi from Kerala recently attempted suicide, alleging that the director of her Kollywood debut film, Selva Kannan, was sexually harassing her. Now, a key member of Tamil film industry’s Nadigar Sangam, which represents the woes of actors, has spoken out on the issue.  Athithi has registered a complaint with the police and the Chief Minister's Cell. Speaking to The News Minute, actor Vishal, who is the Secretary General of the Nadigar Sangam said, "Athithi has told me earlier too that she was being harassed by the director. But since she's not a member of the Sangam, I was unable to help her through the organization." After the suicide attempt, Vishal says that Athithi came over to the Sangam office with her brother and explained the sustained "torture" that she has suffered in the hands of Selva Kannan. "She is staying in a paying guest accommodation and usually has someone around her but she was alone that night and decide to take this drastic step," Vishal says.  Stating that he plans to meet director Selva Kannan in the next couple of days to hear his side of the story, Vishal says, "She has really gone through hell. I have to see what can be done outside of the Nadigar Sangam to help her. She is in no position to complete the film. For now, I have advised her to go back to her hometown."

Civic polls
State Election Commission states that the elections needs to be completed before October 24, 2016.
Following the Madras High court’s order to quash the civic polls notification, the State Election Commission has filed a petition seeking a stay on the order passed by the High court on Tuesday. The affidavit states, “All the officers of Elections once the process is underway under 243 (O), there can be no judicial order on any of the process.” The petition also said that as per article 243 (K) of the constitution of India the elections needs to be conducted every five years and the elections needs to be completed before October 24, 2016.   Justice N Kirubhakaran on Tuesday had taken up the petition of DMK’s organisation secretary RS Bharathi asking to cancel the election notification. The court asked the state election commission to quash the notification and publish fresh notifications before December 30. The petitioner had claimed that the State Election Commission had announced the polls on September 25, 2016 and the process of receiving nominations began from September 26, without giving any proper time to political parties. The counsel of the petitioner had also stated that the state government had failed to give reservations to the Scheduled Tribe (ST) community in the local body elections. The case might be taken up for hearing on Thursday by a Division Bench of Justices Huluvadi G. Ramesh and V. Parthiban if an urgent mention is made on behalf of the State Election Commission, according to The Hindu.

The PIL was filed by social activist Traffic Ramaswamy seeking the “real” status of the CM’s health on Monday.

The Madras High Court has dismissed a petition seeking information on the health of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. It came up before a Madras High Court bench comprising of Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice R Mahadevan.  The court observed that it was a petition meant for publicity. Citing the reasons for dismissal, the High Court said it was not a public interest petition and that it was filed for publicity and for political reasons. The court also observed that seeking photographic proof of Jayalalithaa’s treatment is not justified. The PIL was filed by social activist Traffic Ramaswamy seeking the “real” status of the CM’s health on Monday. On Tuesday, Ramaswamy had approached the High Court after his petition had not been listed that day and urged the court to take up the matter immediately as it was of utmost importance. The Division Bench of Justice MM Sundresh and R Mahadevan then observed that people of Tamil Nadu are anxious about her health and had asked the government pleader to get back on the details regarding her health after consulting the government. The bench had also added, "Though the hospital authorities have issued some statements, the government is duty bound to provide the status of her health." Ramaswamy, in his petition, stated that there were several rumours around Jayalalithaa’s health since her hospitalisation on September 22 and despite Governor Vidyasagar Rao and Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan visiting her on separate occasions, there were no details with regard to her health or treatment.   His plea before the court included wanting it to direct officials in the government and Apollo Hospitals to furnish details about the Chief Minister’s health with substantial material proofs. He also wanted the court to direct the Principal Secretary to the Governor to appoint an interim Chief Minister.   Read: Specialists from AIIMS Delhi will assist Apollo Hospital in Jayalalithaa's treatment

Tamil Nadu assembly deputy speaker’s son on Tuesday rammed his car into another vehicle in Tirupur, which led to the death of one of the co-occupants and injured four others who were present in his car. J Pravin, (19), the son of Tamil Nadu assembly deputy speaker Pollachi V Jayaraman, has been charged under three sections of IPC which include causing death by negligence (IPC 304 A), causing hurt by an act of endangering life (IPC 337) and rash driving, according to The Times of India. The accident occurred when the car reached Oothiyur near Perumanallur in Tirupur district. Police said that he lost control of the car. A police officer told The Times of India, “The car was travelling at such a high speed that it hit the median, jumped over it and rammed into a car coming in the opposite direction. Deepa claimed that after she identified herself as Jayalalithaa's niece, she was told someone of authority would contact her but is still waiting.
PTI/File Photo
A security cordon that would be the envy of many intelligence agencies has been up around Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalithaa ever since she was admitted to Apollo Hospital complaining of “a fever and dehydration”. Even as speculation and rumours have spread like wildfire, no one is being allowed to see the CM. And it seems these rules apply even to relatives of the CM herself. According to The Times of India, Jayalalithaa’s niece Deepa Jayakumar waited for nearly three days to meet the CM, but has not been allowed to do so. Deepa told TOI that even after she identified herself as the CM’s niece, and said she would not leave the hospital until she had met her, she was told that “some person of high authority” would get in touch with her, but has received no such calls yet. A few days ago, it was also reported that Jayalalithaa’s step brother NJ Vasudevan had also attempted to meet her in vain. According to the TOI report, the octogenarian resident of a village near Mysuru had lost his wife and son some years ago, and was hoping to meet his sister before he died.  According to Deepa, while Jayalalithaa was present at her father (and Jayalalithaa’s brother), Jayakumar’s funeral, the CM’s relatives have since been kept away from her. "When my mother (Jayalalithaa's sister-in-law Vijayalakshmi) was critically ill in November, 2012, I could not communicate the news to my aunt,” Deepa told TOI. Deepa also said that the fact that few people had seen Jayalalithaa in the recent past made her suspect that her illness was a serious condition. Deepa has been seen attempting to meet CM Jayalalithaa at other occasions, including when she was released from the Parappana Agrahara prison in connection with the disproportionate assets case, but has never been allowed to interact with Jayalalithaa.

Jayalalithaa's September woes: Why the month never seems to agree with Amma

Politics
The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister was admitted to Apollo Hospital in Chennai on September 22.
September, the ninth month in the Gregorian calendar, seems a worrisome month for Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.  The 68-year-old leader was admitted to the Apollo Hospital in Chennai late on September 22 with complaints of fever and dehydration. Two weeks into her hospitalisation, hundreds of her supporters across the state continue to pray for her speedy recovery. As history remembers, Jayalalithaa has seen her political fortunes slide in past Septembers as well. September 21, 2001 On September 21, 2001, the Supreme Court unseated Jayalalithaa as Chief Minister, ordering that her appointment was “not legal and valid”. The AIADMK leader had been found guilty just 11 months earlier, in the TANSI land deal case by a special court in Chennai. Having been sentenced to three years rigorous imprisonment, Jayalalithaa was barred from contesting the 2001 Assembly Elections in Tamil Nadu. Despite the bar on her contesting, Jayalalithaa campaigned extensively in the run-up to the 2001 polls. The AIADMK front routed the DMK, winning 196 out of 234 seats.  “People voted to make me Chief Minister. If I don't become the Chief Minister, it would amount to disrespect for the people's mandate,” declared Jayalalithaa soon after the AIADMK victory. Her MLAs then nominated the AIADMK supremo as Chief Minister, returning her to the Fort St. George for a second term. But four months after Governor Fatima Beevi had sworn Jayalalithaa in as CM, a five-judge Constitution bench ordered, “a person who is convicted for a criminal offence and sentenced to imprisonment for a period of not less than two years cannot be appointed the Chief Minister of a State under Article 164 (1) read with (4) and cannot continue to function as such.” Calling her appointment as Chief Minister a “clear infringement” of the Constitution, the apex court ruled that Jayalalithaa could not continue to hold office. The September 2001 judgement, however, proved to be a temporary setback for the AIADMK general secretary. The Madras High Court acquitted Jayalalithaa in the TANSI case in December that year. She was soon elected to the Assembly from Andipatti constituency and was sworn in as Chief Minister on March 2, 2002.  September 27, 2014 Thirteen years after being unseated by the Supreme Court, Jayalalithaa became the first sitting Chief Minister to be disqualified as a legislator after being convicted in the disproportionate assets case in 2014. The judgement in the 18-year-old case was pronounced on September 27, with the special court judge John Michael Cunha finding Jayalalithaa guilty of corruption. The special court in Bengaluru sentenced Jayalalithaa to four years in prison and imposed a fine of Rs 100 crore for accumulating wealth disproportionate to her known source of income. The judge also found her associates Sasikala Natarajan, J Elavarasi and V Sudhakaran guilty and sentenced each of them to four years’ imprisonment with a fine of Rs 10 crore. The September 27 judgement appeared to signal the end of her glittering political career, with Jayalalithaa being barred from contesting elections for 10 years. Then 66-years-old, Jayalalithaa spent three weeks at the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison before she returned to her Poes Garden residence in Chennai on conditional bail. Eight months later, on May 11, 2015 the Karnataka High Court acquitted Jayalalithaa and her three associates. The AIADMK supremo, who had spent months camped inside her Chennai home, rose like a phoenix from the ashes. The order set aside her conviction, paving the way for her return to Tamil Nadu politics and to the Chief Minister’s chair. Today, as Jayalalithaa receives treatment at the Chennai hospital, her party workers hope and pray that just as her political fortunes swung in her favour after terrible September crises, their Amma’s health will turn around this time as well.

Public has the right to know: Traffic Ramaswamy after PIL on Jaya’s health dismissed

"We want to know who is running the government in her absence?"
The Madras High Court, on Thursday, dismissed a petition by Traffic Ramaswamy seeking clear information and photographic proof on CM Jayalalithaa’s health condition, calling it a publicity stunt. Ramaswamy, however, sticks to his guns, saying that it is the right of a citizen to know about the health of an elected public servant. Speaking to The News Minute, he said, “She is a Chief Minister, a public servant. The public has elected her and we have every right to know about her health. We want to know who is running the government in her absence? Who is doing the work of the Chief Minister?” The petition was dismissed by a bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice R Mahadevan on Thursday. “It is condemnable for the Chief Justice to say that it is for publicity. Earlier, when the case came for hearing, the judge had said that the state government needs to inform the public about the Chief Minister’s health,” said Ramaswamy. He added that he has filed many cases in the past and the Chief Justice should have known that he does so on genuine grounds. Ramaswamy says that he will be filing a petition in the Supreme Court asking for the information denied him by the HC. In the absence of clear information, he said, rumours and speculations were doing the rounds on social media. “People keep asking me about the Chief Minister’s health and I also keep getting messages on WhatsApp. If the government informs the public about the Chief Minister’s health, these rumours will definitely reduce,” he said. He also demanded once again that the state government publish images of the Chief Minister for the information of the public. Traffic Ramaswamy filed a PIL seeking the “real” status of the CM’s health on Monday. On Tuesday, when the matter was not listed for the day, Ramaswamy had approached the High Court and urged it to take up the matter immediately as it was of utmost importance. The Division Bench of Justice MM Sundresh and R Mahadevan had asked the government pleader to get back on the details regarding her health after consulting the government. The bench had also added, "Though the hospital authorities have issued some statements, the government is duty bound to provide the status of her health." Ramaswamy’s PIL had also asked the court to direct the Principal Secretary to the Governor to appoint an interim Chief Minister. VN Sudhakaran, Jayalalithaa’s once ‘foster son’ and later ‘disowned son’ reached Apollo hospital at Greams Road in Chennai around 6 pm on Thursday.
On Thursday, as Jayalalithaa was being treated at the Apollo hospital in Chennai, with her confidante Sasikala next to her, a visitor came calling. The last time they were in the same space was in September 2014 when Special Judge John Michael Cunha sentenced them in the disproportionate assets case.   VN Sudhakaran, Jayalalithaa’s once ‘foster son’ and later ‘disowned son’ reached Apollo hospital at Greams Road in Chennai around 6 pm on Thursday. Wearing a white Chinese collared shirt, he reached the main gate of the hospital in an Innova car. Commotion ensued as journalists present at the hospital gate scrambled to get visuals of the man. Though the car stopped outside the hospital, waiting for policemen and hospital security to remove barricades installed at the gate, no one made a move. With Sudhakaran accompanied by another man showing no signs of leaving, a few policemen went inside the hospital to get instructions.   There was much excitement as most expected the policemen to return with permission to let Sudhakaran inside. But around 7 pm they came out with instructions that he could not enter the main block of the hospital and visit Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. Sudhakaran who had not got down from the car even for a minute swiftly drove away. While Sudhakaran, also Sasikala’s nephew, was a foster son for a short while, even Jayalalithaa’s own niece Deepa Jayakumar had not been allowed to visit her aunt. Jayalalithaa’s relationship with Deepa's father had soured a few years before his death and though the niece had waited outside the hospital for two days, she had not been allowed inside.  Jayalalithaa's niece says not allowed to meet her, CM's step brother also trying in vain VN Sudhakaran, a hitherto unknown face in Tamil Nadu politics was suddenly adopted by Jayalalithaa in 1995. At the time of announcement, Sudhakaran was betrothed to legendary actor Sivaji Ganesan’s granddaughter Satyavati and the marriage scheduled to be held in September 1995. Jayalalithaa told her party cadres that they should consider the wedding as one within the family and celebrate it. The extravagant wedding spelled the beginning of Jayalalithaa’s downward spiral then. Public anger built up against her as crores were splurged on the wedding and the images of a fully decked up Jayalalithaa and Sasikala became a symbol of corruption. Image by Nakeeran Jayalalithaa was routed in the 1996 election and was jailed on corruption charges. In the DA case against her, Judge Cunha found that of the total expenditure at around Rs 8 crore, expenses borne by Jayalalithaa were Rs 3 crore. Image by Hindu Businessline After the extravagant wedding, things soured between Jayalalithaa and her foster son. Though she never spelt out the reason for disowning him, many reports from the time suggest that Sudhakaran took away crores from her Poes garden residence and never returned it. He was disowned by Jayalalithaa on August 25, 1996, a day that he later termed as his ‘Independence Day’. Sudhakaran told Outlook in 1997 that Jayalalithaa made him a foster son on his engagement day for settling her personal scores. According to him, Jayalalithaa had to stand up each time Sivaji Ganesan entered a function to show her respect and she had resented it. By positioning herself as the 'groom's mother', she ensured that Sivaji was relegated to being the bride's emissary, he alleged.  Sudhakaran had in 1996 started JJ TV, and went on to manage it for some years. He also formed a small outfit called the "Chinna MGR Narpani Manram” (Junior MGR Fan Club). In 2001, hours after he made an adverse comment on Jayalalithaa, Sudhakaran’s house in Chennai was raided on a complaint registered by a former aide. An unlicensed gun and a packet of heroin were seized, leading to his arrest.   In September 2014, Sudhakaran, a co-accused in the disproportionate assets case against J Jayalalithaa was sentenced to four years in prison along with the TN CM, Sasikala and her niece Ilaivarasi.

Jayalalithaa's health
Treatment includes respiratory support, nebulization, drugs to decongest the lungs, antibiotics, nutrition, general nursing care and supportive therapy.
Two weeks since TN CM J Jayalalithaa was admitted to Apollo Hospital in Chennai for ‘fever and dehydration’, the hospital has released its most detailed press release yet, indicating the critical nature of her health. The hospital says that she requires a longer stay at the hospital. While stating that a “comprehensive treatment plan including appropriate antibiotics, respiratory support and other allied clinical measures are being continued”, the statement says that the leader “continues to improve and making gradual progress”. The hospital says that it had drawn up a treatment plan based on her “known history of diabetes and winter bronchitis”, which includes respiratory support, nebulization, drugs to decongest the lungs, antibiotics, nutrition, general nursing care and supportive therapy. The statement also confirms what The News Minute had reported earlier, on the team of doctors from AIIMS being flown in to treat Jayalalithaa. The AIIMS team is said to be in agreement with the line of treatment being given to Jayalalithaa. She is now under the observation of “Intensivists, Cardiologists, Respiratory physicians, infectious disease specialists and diabetologists”. On Sunday, the hospital had released another statement stating that CM’s health is improving and she is responding well to the treatment. The press release stated, “The Honourable Chief Minister is responding well to the treatment given to her. The Honourable Chief Minister has been advised a few more days stay in the hospital for treatment.” It also confirmed that Dr. Richard Beale from London examined Jayalalithaa and had detailed discussion with the expert group of doctors who are treating her. Based on the discussion, the doctors had a treatment plan which included appropriate antibiotics and other clinical measures carried out to treat infection. Prior to that, three official statements had been given out by the hospital. On September 23, the hospital had stated that she was admitted for fever and dehydration. Two days later, amidst rumours of her being flown to Singapore for treatment, the hospital called for a press meet and said that she was recovering well to the treatment and there were no plans of her being flown out for treatment. On September 29, the hospital stated that the chief minister has to stay in hospital for few more days for recuperative treatment. On Friday, DMK chief Karunanidhi had urged the government to release a photograph of her. On Saturday, Tamil Nadu governor Vidyasagar Rao visited the Apollo hospital. In an official statement, it was stated, “The Governor was happy to note that the Hon’ble Chief Minister is recovering well. The Governor appreciated the Doctors for providing the best medical care and treatment to the Hon’ble Chief Minister.”

Impose President's rule in TN, invoke AFSPA in few districts: Swamy to centre

Jayalalithaa
Swamy wrote to Rajnath Singh on Friday
Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has been admitted to Apollo hospital in Chennai for more than two weeks and according to doctors, will be staying longer at the hospital. Meanwhile, over the last few days, the NIA has arrested several people from Kerala and Tamil Nadu with links to the Islamic State. These two events seem to have prompted BJP leader Subramanian Swamy to write a letter to Union Home minister Rajnath Singh asking the centre to impose President's Rule in Tamil Nadu and invoke AFSPA in certain districts including Chennai.  In a letter addressed to Rajnath Singh on Friday, Swamy wrote:   The Union Government should declare President’s rule in Tamil Nadu in view of the administrative disarray in the state following the indefinite hospitalization of the Chief Minister and her having to remain for health reasons incommunicado. A retired chief secretary has been allowed to conduct the business of the state.   During this ad hoc administrative situation, there has been an activization of the sleeper cell of the ISIS in the districts of Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, Madurai and Kanyakumari and a collaborative and supportive action by the Dravida Kazhagam, left over LTTE and disruptive groups such as underground Naxalites, to create an upheaval in the state, causing a massive disorder and lawlessness.   Therefore, I urge the Union Home Minister Mr Rajnath Singh to invoke Article 366 of the constitution and put the legislative assembly in suspended animation and impose the AFSPA in all southern districts as well as Chennai for a period of six months till Jayalaithaa is able to attend office.

10 years since emergency contraceptives disappeared from TN, voices rise against the ban

Reproductive Health
The ban is on moral grounds and is not legal.

For over a decade since the Tamil Nadu government imposed a moral ban on Emergency Contraceptive Pills (ECPs), many have voiced out their protest asking the government to revoke its decision. Recently, an online petition was started by  Jhatkaa.org, a Bengaluru based organization, asking the Tamil Nadu Director of Drugs Control, S Abdul Khader, to lift the ban on ECPs stating that the ban was not based on any legal grounds. The petition has got over 1,500 signatures. A blog by author Vaishnavi Sundar also went viral recently. It was her blog that gave way to the petition. She wrote, "In a country where rape is rampant and child marriage is still being practiced, providing ECPs is the least a government can do to protect a woman’s choice and dignity." Vaishnavi plans on taking the peition forward in Tamil Nadu. In 2002, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare made ECPs available. And in what was considered a major step forward for the reproductive rights of women, levonorgestrel- ECPs were made over-the-counter drugs in 2005. However, in 2006, the then Tamil Nadu government’s drug controller, N.Selvaraju, imposed a ban on ECPs, following objections from the Chennai-based Responsible Parents Forum and Satvika Samuga Sevakar Sangam. N.Selvaraju stated that the ban was important since ECPs would encourage women to think that they could do “anything” and get away without a pregnancy. Stocks worth lakhs were seized from pharmacies in the country’s health capital, Chennai, in September that year. The contention was that the drug induces abortion and that it is not a contraceptive, and hence sale without prescription would be illegal. This is even after India legalised abortion up to 20 weeks for reasons including contraception failure. Vaishnavi told The News Minute: “Many studies have proven that Viagra also has side effects, but the varieties of the drug are sold over the counter. The government is clearly discriminating. It is not going to be very difficult for the state government to come up with visual instruction and programmes educating women on the usage of ECP." The petition says that the ban not only showed the complete lack of understanding of women’s health, but a strong desire to control women and the choices they make with their bodies. An Economic Times report quotes Abdul Khader saying, "These pills contain levonorgestrel, a hormone used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex. While the strength of the over-the-counter product was fixed at 0.1mg, the products in the market were above 0.75mg. We wanted them relabelled as prescription or Schedule H drugs and disallowed their sale as over-the-counter drugs.” Medical experts’ opinions are divided on this issue. While some say that continuous usage of the levonorgestrel-based ECP might have an adverse effect on health, others says that the OTC sale of the pills will help prevent unwanted pregnancies, especially among victims of marital rape.

Jaya hospitalized: Does TN Governor have no way out but to appoint a Deputy or Acting CM?

A Deputy or Acting Chief Minister is however not a constitutional post.
With no clarity on the exact status of the health of TN CM J Jayalalithaa who has been hospitalized in Apollo hospital in Chennai since September 22, the state could be staring at constitutional crisis if the right steps are not taken by TN Governor Vidyasagar Rao, say legal experts. Jurists state that only if a deputy or acting CM is appointed by the Governor can the government function. Times of India quotes senior lawyer KM Vijayan as saying, “One cannot be the chief minister unless he/she is not in a position to aid and advise the governor, in his/her capacity as head of the council of ministers.” “It is not an empty formality. A governor cannot afford to make compromises. Article 163 and 164 of the Constitution talk about how governor acts on the aid and advise of the council of ministers and chief minister, and how he appoints them,” Vijayan told A  Subramani of TOI. A Deputy or Acting Chief Minister is however not a constitutional post. A sitting minister can be announced as Deputy Chief Minister and made in-charge of general administration. “Acting or deputy CM is not mentioned in the constitution. If a Chief Minister is unwell or out of the country, the acting or deputy CM, usually the senior most person in the cabinet, can discharge the duties of a Chief Minister,” Subhash Kashyap, a constitutional expert told The News Minute. This is not the first time that Tamil Nadu will possibly have a Deputy CM. In 2009, then Chief Minister M Karunanidhi owing to ill health had appointed his cabinet minister MK Stalin as Deputy CM. Many portfolios were reallocated to Stalin. The legal reasoning behind appointing a deputy or acting CM, as Vijayan says, is that “it does not matter whether a vacancy has arisen or not, if the chief minister is not in a condition to offer advice to the governor, the governor has to ask every member of the cabinet to resign, then ask the legislature party to elect a new leader and appoint him/her as chief minister.” BJP leader Subramanian Swamy recently wrote to Home Minister Rajnath asking the centre to impose President’s rule in Tamil Nadu till Jayalalithaa is back in her seat. Though party leaders and bureaucrats say they are confident of Jayalalithaa’s return as Chief Minister, there is murmur within party circles as to who will run the government if her condition prevents her from doing so. "The governor has a right to appoint a chief minister, and today the ground of 'incapacity to act' is available to him to exercise his options. Someone can be sworn in as an interim arrangement, since the governor can relieve or appoint anybody on the ground that the Constitution has to continue to work," a senior legal officer of the Union government is reported to have told TOI. Meanwhile, former HC judge K Chandru had another pertinent question, where is the full-time Governor for Tamil Nadu? Rao is the Governor of Maharashtra, and only hold additional charge as Governor of TN.
