Poosari Kanagarajan, whose formal education stopped with Class 8, has published two books in Kovmozhi in an effort to preserve the language.
In quick strides, supported by a walking stick, Poosari AR Kanagarajan crosses the uneven terrain to greet us at his son’s house in Pudhu Kotagiri. It’s a cool April afternoon and the temperatures is below 16 degrees thanks to a steady drizzle in the Nilgiris. But 73-year-old Kanagarajan has no sweater on, not even a scarf. “I would invite you to my house, but outsiders are not allowed to enter a poosari’s house. It’s an ancient practice,” he explains. Dressed in a crisp, white veshti and a matching thundu wrapped around his shoulders, clad in the traditional Kota style, Poosari Kanagarajan, a Kota priest, tells us of his scholarly pursuits. In spite of discontinuing his formal education after Class 8, he has authored and published two books on Kovmozhi, the language of the Kota tribe. But his most remarkable achievement is that he developed the script for Kovmozhi by himself, for the language had no formal script of its own – it was only used in the spoken form by the Kota tribe. The Kotas of the Nilgiris Among the major (TN) tribes of Nilgiris – Irulas, Badagas, Todas, Kotas and Kurumbas – the Kotas are usually found on the upper elevations, along with the Todas, and never on the plains. Kanagarajan recalls that in 1910, the entire tribe was displaced by the British from the present Nehru park region in Kotagiri (near Donnington Circle). “We were sent to a low-lying area – more like a ditch (Kuzhi). In 1960, heavy rains resulted in the land splitting in two. A huge rift was formed. I remember it even now. If you were to drop a stone, it kept going deep inside, like an unending well,” he says. Following this, the Kotas were then allocated lands spread across seven villages – Keezh Kotagiri, Pudhu Kotagiri, Kunda Kotagiri, Trichigadi, Kollimalai (near Ooty), Sholu Kokkal and Mel Gudalur Kokkal. In each village, the way the language is spoken is different. Kotagiri itself derives its name from the Kota tribe. “When the Tamils came here, they named this place ‘Kota-giri’ which means Kota’s Mountains. Also, in Kovmozhi, we call our streets ‘Keri’ and every village has three keris – melkeri, keezhkeri and nadukeri. Perhaps Kotagiri also comes from Kota-Keri,” explains Kanagarajan. These Keri's are also exogamous we learn.  The language of the Kotas under threat of extinction Most Nilgiri tribal languages do not have scripts. Kanagarajan’s profound love for his language and culture, along with a fear of their disappearance, encouraged him to record them in books, and to preserve and propagate them better. “In Kovmozhi we use the word ‘angadi’, which means shop in Tamil. Now why would the Kotas, who lived in the mountains, have use for a word that described ‘shop’?” he asks. While researchers like Murray Barnson Emeneau have studied the culture and language of the Kota tribe in detail, it is the first time that a Kota linguist has emerged. The fact that he has not even completed his high school education makes it all the more remarkable. There also happens to be a Ph.D. scholar from the Allu Kurumba tribe, who is currently working on documenting the Kurumba language. Kanagarajan’s first book, published after multiple trials and errors in 1985, is a guide to the basics of Kovmozhi. His second book, a Kovmozhi dictionary, was published in 2016. In the prologue to his first book, Kanagarajan writes, "50-years ago, except the Kotas, nobody else understood Kovmozhi. But today, more people are easily able to understand this language. The reason is that more Kov youngsters are studying English, Hindi and Tamil in their schools and are fraternising with the others coming from different communities. This has resulted in mixing other language words with Kovmozhi. Few words are no longer understood by our youngsters these days. Many Kovmozhi words have gone out of use. If this situation continues, Kovmozhi might soon be forgotten. This book is a part of my effort to help protect our language.” Kanagarajan is also working on his third book, which will be a compilation of all the cultural practices of the Kota tribe. He also has plans to bring out a fourth book called Komakkalin Mudhan Saadhanaiyalargal (The Kov Peoples’ First Achievers), with photographs and short profiles of contemporary achievers from the tribe. “We’ve got a pilot, a doctor, a postgraduate with an MA degree. My granddaughter herself is a Bharathanatyam dancer, who has won awards in many competitions.” Blacksmith turned priest turned linguist Kanagarajan has served as the village priest (poosari) for about 40 years – a position, respected and venerated by the village folks, retiring only two years ago. Kota villages have two priests – one for each god. Their gods have no forms and their temple shrines house the ‘agal vilakku’ (earthen lamp) that’s constantly burning to signify the gods. There's the Father – Aynore – and the Mother – Amlore. It was only recently that they began embracing Hindu gods like Shiva and Krishna. While trying to interpret their culture, the Tamils attributed Aynore-Amlore to Shiva-Parvati, which may explain the influences of Hinduism among Kotas. Seen on the covers: Kota Temple (left) and old photograph that was taken in the year 1883 (right) “Not everyone can become a poosari. You have to be called (by god). And once you’ve been called, you’ve got to give up whatever it is that you are doing. I was a blacksmith before this. The current poosari was with the Taluk office,” he says. In 1968, when Kanagarajan was in his early 20s, he was employed by the Income Tax Department in Karaikudi. “But I served very briefly, for a little more than a year. I had to come back because of my legs – I have osteoporosis,” he says. He then went on to work at his co-brother’s workshop in Ramchand. Soon, he opened his own workshop in which he worked with metals and wood for close to 12 years before being called to become the poosari. Throughout our conversations, Kanagarajan is very forthcoming and eloquent. He describes in great detail about the traditional practices and customs of the Kotas, their festivals, games and more. At no point does he need prodding. Always twirling his thick white moustache and patting down his grizzly white beard, Kanagarajan explains his fervent interest in languages. In his early twenties, Kanagarajan subscribed to English grammar books, which he devoured with great interest. “Ask me anything from English grammar,” he says with a smile. He even encouraged his wife to take up reading in her free time. “I often told her that only by reading will you learn more.” He also shows us his Hindi picture books, adding that he can also understand Malayalam and Kannada to some extent. He also tells us of his love for the fiction stories that were published in Tamil magazines like Kalkandu, Rani Muthu and Ambulimama. He brings out his collection of books, packed in plastic pouches and neatly arranged inside cardboard boxes. Among the titles we could make out, there were books on Vivekananda’s teachings, a copy of the Bible, an illustrated cover bearing the name Siva Puranam, English grammar books of varying sizes and several other books in both english and Tamil. Efforts to preserve the language and culture of the Kotas Kanagarajan first began by writing several pages in the basic Kovmozhi script. He then tried photocopying these pages, which did not turn out as expected. Later, a friend introduced him to computer scanning. Using Tamil typing tools, he entered words in Tamil and left blank spaces where the Kovmozhi words would be written. He filled these spaces with his handwritten words, then scanned the pages and finally took them for printing. The arduous process proved successful, and once he was satisfied with the outcome, Kanagarajan took to distributing his books among the villagers for free. He also insists that all the tribe members speak only in Kovmozhi during their fifteen-day annual festival. “If someone were to use other language words, they would be corrected. This way, they learn more Kovmozhi words,” he explains. Pointing to his son’s house, Kanagarajan proudly says, “This house was built by my son. I instructed him and he did it – right from laying the foundation to electrical work and plumbing. We had no help from anyone else.” Perched on a small elevated piece, surrounded by the misty blue mountains and greenery, the house in white is a humble one-storey building with brick walls and a tin roof. There’s a sense of pride and accomplishment in his voice; and rightfully so. The Kotas (Kotas/self-identified as the Kovs), an indigenous tribe from Tamil Nadu’s Nilgiris, are expert blacksmiths, potters and musicians and are often regarded as “jack of all trades”. Although not agriculturalists themselves, the ethnic tribe sustained itself by exchanging tools and vessels for milk, grains, vegetables and the likes. Today, in addition to their language, the Kota craft and skills are on the verge of extinction. The tribe has explored beyond just black-smithery and pottery. Kanagarajan’s son for instance works with the Military Engineering Services (MES) and his grandson is currently employed with L&T. Before we leave, he points to his books and says, “I’ll have to box them up again. The youngsters don't read Tamil anymore. They prefer books in English.”

The superstar took to Twitter to condemn the violence, especially the attack on cops, witnessed before the CSK vs KKR match at Chepauk on Tuesday.
Following the massive protests against IPL that turned violent on Tuesday, actor-turned politician Rajinikanth slammed the attack on the policemen stationed on duty at the MA Chidambaram stadium in Chennai. Taking to Twitter to speak on the issue, Rajinikanth said, “The worst form of violence in law and order situation is attack on uniformed personnel on duty.” “This form of violence has to be tackled immediately as it poses grave danger to our country. We need more stringent laws to punish the perpetrators of attack on police personnel on duty,” he said. The actor also put up a video of protestors attacking policemen along with his tweet. சீருடையில் இருக்கும் காவலர்கள் மீது கை வைப்பவர்களை தண்டிக்க இன்னும் கடுமையான சட்டங்களை நாம் இயற்றவேண்டும். pic.twitter.com/05buIcQ1VS — Rajinikanth (@rajinikanth) April 11, 2018 After this, Rajini’s fan association, too, posted a tweet, apologising to the team for the violence. In the tweet, the association blamed the political parties and said, "Please don't spoil Tamizh culture," followed by an apology to the team and the players. In Cricket everyone will say Chennai crowd are Knowledgeable crowd. But it was proved as false because of some political Parties. Pls don't spoil #Thamizh Culture.  Sorry @ChennaiIPL Team@faf1307 @imjadeja @JadhavKedar @Zakka_Jacob pic.twitter.com/4Ga8giyQLI— Rajinikanth fans (@Rajni_FC) April 11, 2018 On Tuesday, several protesters from various political parties as well as some members of the film industry laid siege to Anna Salai ahead of the CSK vs KKR match that took place at 8pm. Protesters from parties including Thamizhar Vazhu Urimai Katchi (TVK), Vidudhalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Naam Thamizhar, SDPI came in droves and landed up near the Anna Statue in Anna Salai in the evening. Visuals even showed CSK fans being assaulted by the protesters. Some of the fans were made to remove their CSK jerseys by the protesting crowd. The police jumped into action, putting barricades to cut off their onward march towards the stadium. But protesters jumped over barricades and fell on the police and media personnel on the other side. There were 4000 odd police personnel stationed at the stadium to ensure that the situation was peaceful. Inside the stadium, one of the protesters hurled a shoe into the pitch to continue the agitation. The protesters were detained by the police and six cadres from the Naam Thamizhar party were arrested for hurling shoes into the stadium. The CSK vs KKR match went on relatively uninterrupted despite the massive protests. CSK won the match against KKR by 5 wickets. Political parties, farmers and even actors have been holding protests against the non-formation of the Cauvery Management Board and have also demanded that IPL matches should not be conducted in Chennai, as it would remove focus from the ongoing struggle against the Centre. The superstar had earlier stated that CSK players should wear black badges during the IPL to send a message about Cauvery. Addressing media outside his residence, the actor had said, “It is an embarrassment if we enjoy IPL during this crucial time. Our team (CSK) should try to wear black badges during the game to send the message across the country, the team owners should also support it,” he said.

Ranjith ran into a high tension live wire, and was immediately electrocuted.
In a shocking incident a PMK worker, who was walking on top of a train in Tindivanam in Tamil Nadu, was electrocuted on Wednesday. The man, identified as 32-year-old Ranjith, was part of the rail mariyal (protest by blocking trains) staged by the PMK over the Cauvery issue.  The incident was caught on camera. The video shows a group of PMK workers marching on the railway tracks, carrying aloft the party flag. While some cadres are sitting on top of the engine, Ranjith and another cadre can be seen running on top of a train clearly ignoring the high-tension wires above their heads. All of a sudden, Ranjith comes into contact with an overhead electric line. The video shows a spark and Ranjith aflame. According to PMK members, Ranjith was immediately rushed to the hospital. He was hospitalised at JIPMER in Puducherry. Although news agency ANI claimed that Ranjith had passed away, two sources in the PMK told TNM that he is still alive.  “As his condition was serious, JIPMER advised that he be transferred to Sri Ramachandra Medical College. But later, they said there was no need to shift him,” said a source in the PMK.  The source later however added that it seemed that Ranjith's burns are not critical. During protests in which railway stations are targeted, demonstrators lie or sit on rail tracks, blocking trains from passing.  It is also a norm during such protests for protesters to climb on top of trains, waving their party flags.  PMK had called for a bandh and a rail mariyal in five districts - Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Salem, Cuddalore, Viluppuram and Puducherry over the Centre’s alleged failure to set up the Cauvery Management Board. During the rail roko in Tindivanam in Villupuram district, a group of men climbed on top of a stationary train.  PMK leader and Dharmapuri MP Anbumani Ramadoss was leading the rail mariyal at the Egmore Railway Station in Chennai. He and other PMK workers have been taken into preventive custody.   Trigger warning: The video has disturbing content.

In spite of financial constraints, 45-year-old Kalaimani is presently training for her next 42 km marathon.
By Arrangement
“When I’m at home, problems bog me down. The ground is my release,” says Kalaimani, a 45-year-old Coimbatore marathon runner who also runs a tea stall. While Kalaimani used to be extremely interested in sports in school and had pursued athletics and kabaddi, she had to stop after she got married. “I told my husband even at the time we were getting married that I was really interested in sports. I very much wanted to be involved in sports,” she says. Her husband, Kalaimani says, has been her support system. It was he who, ten years ago, showed her an advertisement in the newspaper for Masters athletics – an athletics competition for those aged 35 and above. That’s when Kalaimani’s love for sports was renewed and she participated in the 400 m, 800 m and 1,500 m races. She even won medals at the state level. The ground and sports are what keep her alive, Kalaimani says. Financial constraints, however, have restrained her from truly pursuing her dream. Kalaimani says that though she has got selected for various tournaments, sadly she couldn’t go and participate in some of them. “There’s just money for us to eat here, and I have been running using that only. It’s been struggle after struggle, problem after problem,” she says. However, in September last year, Kalaimani became interested in running marathons. That’s when she joined the Coimbatore-based Phoenix Runners. Since then, Kalaimani has been pursuing her passion for marathons and has completed the 21 km marathon many times. She has even completed the 42 km marathon four times, currently clocking 4 hours and 48 minutes, and aspires to complete it under 4 hours. But how does the mother of three who runs a tea stall full time with her husband get the time to train? “I train every day. I wake up at 4 am, drop my husband off at the stall at 5 am and go to the ground for coaching. Training starts around 5-5.30 am and goes on till about 7.30 am. I then go home, freshen up and head to the stall, where I stay till about 8 pm,” she says. “Every Sunday, we run a 21 km marathon without fail. I’m training for my next 42 km marathon,” she says, visibly proud. Kalaimani, however, rues the lack of financial support. “My coach and the people I run with have supported me. That’s why I could even travel to Bengaluru as well,” she explains. Kalaimani has been putting in her own money, even out of Rs 400-500 the family earns daily from the tea stall. “I don’t have the means. I’ve been doing this for so many years, but there has barely been any help or support. We’ve been spending our money,” she says. Kalaimani hopes to win a marathon and use the money to support her daughter and two sons. While both her sons work as school van drivers, her daughter is pursuing her undergraduate degree. “I wish to win marathons and do something for my children. I believe I can win,” she says.

Cauvery issue
Justifying Tuesday’s protests and violence, the Forum for Welfare of Tamil art and literature said their protests will intensify.
Twitter: @madhavpramod1
A day after massive protests rocked Chennai over the IPL match being held in the city, Naam Tamizhar Katchi leader Seeman has issued the next threat, saying Chennai Super Kings’ next home ground match “will not happen.” Speaking to reporters at a press conference on Wednesday Seeman said, “Tomorrow we will protest. April 20 match won’t happen.” Seeman along with directors Bharathiraja, Ameer and other allied parties had recently formed a Forum for Welfare of Tamil Art and Literature that will fight for causes such as the Cauvery issue. Director Bharathiraja added, “We will continue to protest every time there is an IPL match in Chennai. The protests will be intensified.” Chennai Super Kings are set to face off against the Rajasthan Royals on April 20 at the MA Chidambaram stadium in Chennai. Chennai’s first home ground match against Kolkata Knight Riders on Tuesday was met with massive protests near the stadium by parties including the VCK, Naam Thamizhar, and SDPI, who came in droves and blocked Anna Salai less than 2 kilometres from where the match was taking place. Protesting groups have been demanding that the IPL matches not take place in Chennai, arguing that it would not be right to hold matches in the city when the state was in distress over the non-formation of the Cauvery Management Board by the Centre.    Tuesday’s visuals even showed CSK fans being assaulted by the protesters. Some of the fans were made to remove their CSK jerseys by the protesting crowd. Staunch CSK supporter and team mascot Saravanan Hari, known for his characteristic yellow-paint look at IPL game was also allegedly assaulted outside the stadium by a group of protesters. Faced with criticism over the violence, Seeman, however, justified the attack, stating, “We didn’t indulge in violence. It was the police who resorted to lathi charge. Who attacked cricket fans? If we wanted to attack, could anyone have entered the stadium? What violence did we do?” MLA Thamimun Ansari, however, interjected and claimed, “Few of those people demeaned and provoked the protesters. So something may have happened.” Several groups had earlier called for a boycott of the matches, while actor-turned-politician Rajinikanth had urged spectators to wear black.  Despite many fans claiming that they were forced to change their yellow jersey by protesters, Director Bharathiraja claimed, “All those who went (for the match) were outside faces, people from outside the state.” At this point, a woman leader who was standing behind Seeman said, “A police officer touched me here (pointing to the area between her chest and left shoulder) and pushed me. Isn't that violence and unacceptable?” With Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to arrive for the DefExpo event in Chennai on Thursday, Seeman said that they would protest at the airport. “We are definitively showing black flag. We would have rolled out a red carpet to the PM if the Cauvery Water Management Board was set up. We will show black flag the Chennai airport,” said Seeman. According to media reports, Seeman has been booked on 10 charges at the Triplicane police station including for attempt to murder and issuing death threats. Members of his party were seen attacking police personnel on duty on Tuesday. The police personnel were on duty to control the ensuing protests on Anna Salai over the IPL match taking place at the MA Chidambaram stadium. 10 members of the party were arrested and were remanded to judicial custody at Puzhal on Wednesday.

Rajinikanth had tweeted to say that the violence against policemen was ‘a grave danger’ to the country.

Hours after actor-turned-politician Rajinikanth slammed protesters for Tuesday’s violence against policemen stationed at the MA Chidambaram stadium in Chennai, director Bharathiraja hit out at the superstar questioning his motives. Addressing a press conference as part of the Forum for the welfare of Tamil Art and Literature, Bharathiraja said, “When there was violence against the people of Tamil Nadu in Karnataka, there was no word from Rajinikanth.  Only now we are getting to know his real intention are clear now.” The director was taking a dig at Rajini’s ‘Kannada roots’, having been born and brought up in Bengaluru before moving to Chennai, where he became as star.   Taking to Twitter, Rajinikanth stated, “The worst form of violence in law and order situation is attack on uniformed personnel on duty. This form of violence has to be tackled immediately as it poses grave danger to our country. We need more stringent laws to punish the perpetrators of attack on police personnel on duty,” he said. The actor also put up a video of protestors attacking policemen along with his tweet.  Naam Tamilar Katchi chief Seeman also lashed out at Rajini, saying, “Rajinikanth was never on field, he is just sitting his room and tweeting.” Claiming that the superstar has no clue over the Cauvery dispute, he urged Rajini to keep quiet on the issue. While MLA Tamimun Ansari said that Rajini’s tweets demeaned Tuesday’s protest, director Amir pointed to the actor’s earlier tweets, which included praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi over demonetisation. “Rajinikanth tweets are only to appease the people in power. Rajinikanth tweeted the next minute when demonetisation was announced. He never tweeted anything for a commoner.”   Political parties, farmers and even actors have been holding protests against the non-formation of the Cauvery Management Board and have also demanded that IPL matches should not be conducted in Chennai, as it would remove focus from the ongoing struggle against the Centre. Defence Expo
The DefExpo targets India's goal of building a self-sufficient domestic arms industry -- a key facet of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "Make in India" slogan.
Nirmala Sithraman/PTI
By Sarwar Kashani India’s 10th Defense Expo kicked off on Wednesday at Thiruvidanthai near Chennai. Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s arrival at the event on Thursday, the first day saw Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman speak about making India a self-sufficient arms manufacturer and attracting new overseas customers. The four-day DefExpo India, whose theme is "Emerging Defence Manufacturing Hub” is a biennial exercise aimed at establishing Brand India and highlighting the manufacturing capabilities of the country's public and private sectors. Asked about the huge export-import gap in the defence sector of a country that does not even figure among the top 25 exporters of arms and reluctance of its forces to buy locally manufactured weapon systems, Sitharaman said she could only tell the Indian armed forces to procure from indigenous companies "as much as possible". She said she could not cross a "thin line" to impinge on the freedom of the Indian Army, the Indian Air Force or the Indian Navy "to make their own decisions" as per their operational requirements."I can't imagine prevailing upon them. We will only want them to give space to local manufacturers and buy indigenous products." The defence exhibition that targets India's futuristic goal of building a self-sufficient domestic arms industry -- a key facet of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "Make in India" slogan -- comes even as the armed forces of India facing multiple security threats continue to be saddled with sub-optimal weapon systems. At the heart of this is the country's inability to boost indigenous defence manufacturing, which is often blamed on inordinate procedural delays, making a product redundant by the time it gets market-ready. For example, the advanced versions of the indigenous Tejas light combat aircraft and the Arjun main battle tank. While the aircraft is still not combat-ready despite being in the making for over three decades, the main battle tank is said to be too heavy and poor in serviceability. At the defence exhibition, dozens of foreign and local companies and defence public sector undertakings are hard selling their products to the Indian armed forces and foreigners, including defence attaches. Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar said the government was not targeting a specific number of deals or agreements expected to be signed at the exhibition that "showcases the strengths of India's public sector and also uncovers India's growing private industry and spreading MSME base for components and sub-systems". Over 650 exhibitors, including some 520 Indian companies, are participating in the event. Official delegations from nearly 50 countries, including the US and the UK, are attending the expo that has participation of some major global companies including Lockheed Martin, Boeing, BAE Systems, Rafael, Saab, Airbus, Rosonboron Exports, United Shipbuilding, Sibat, Wartsila and Rhode and Schwarz. The response from foreign companies this time, as compared to the previous DefExpo held in Goa in 2016, has not been that good. A total of 232 foreign companies had participated in Goa, while it is 154 this time. Also on display at the 2.90 lakh-square-feet exhibition area along the sea coast are indigenously developed land, air and naval systems. These include Tejas fighter jets, advanced towed artillery gun systems designed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Arjun Mark 2 tank and Dhanush artillery guns. The DRDO is showcasing the Nirbhay missile system with its launcher, MBT Arjun Mk-I tank, Astra missile, low-level transportable radar system, medium power radar system and Varunastra -- heavyweight anti submarine electric torpedo. Protests
A wall was demolished to ensure the PM goes directly from helipad to one of the events.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is in Chennai on Thursday for multiple events, has come under criticism from local parties over his 'security' arrangements. According to the Prime Minister's travel plans, he will not at any point of his visit to Chennai be travelling on roads and come face to face with public. Massive security arrangements have been made to ensure that the PM flies to both the events he is participating in. This heightened security arrangement comes because multiple political parties in the state are set to wave black flags at the PM to protest the Centre's failure to form the Cauvery Management board. The PM will travel by helicopter from the airport to the Defence expo on the Old Mahaballipuram road. Following this, he will make his way back to the centre of the city to inaugurate four facilities at the Adyar Cancer Institute via air. A compound wall shared by the Children’s Park and the cancer institute was demolished to allow the Prime Minister to enter the premises for the event. Authorities have prepared a helipad on the IIT Madras campus. Questioning the decision to not even enter public roads, MDMK chief Vaiko asked, "Aren't you the bravest, Mr.Modi? Why can't you travel by road? You are going directly into IIT by helicopter and then a wall is broken to let you into Cancer Institute. We have never seen such a cowardly Prime Minister in India. You are a coward. Are we going to shoot you through the black flags? Didn't Nehru face black flags?" It was DMK working President MK Stalin who first announced that black flags will be hoisted to 'greet' the PM. On Tuesday, he said the day of PM Modi's visit is a day of 'grief' (dukkha naal) for the state in view of the Centre's 'betrayal.' A black flag has already been hoisted at DMK Chief M Karunanidhi's Gopalapuram residence and MK Stalin's residence. Agitators have gathered across the city, including at the airport, with black flags to register their protest. Some agitators climbed a giant hoarding at the air port to make their black flags visible to the PM's helicopter. 5,000 police personnel have been deployed in the city and at the expo venue for the PM's visit. Special Action Force and Special Task Force have been roped in and a three-tier security has been arranged at the airport, IIT-M and Cancer Institute, Adyar. Following intelligence reports that suggested that drones will be used to send black flags into the air, police have warned protesters of severe action.

Protest
As a result of the protests, major traffic snarls were also reported to have clogged the long stretch leading to the Chennai airport.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Chennai on Thursday morning amid protests around the city's airport over the issue of setting up a Cauvery Management Board. Security was stepped up in the city and a large number of security personnel and police were deployed near the airport to avoid any untoward incidents. Several protesters descended at Meenambakkam near the airport, raising slogans and holding placards that read 'Go Back Modi!', with some even climbing on top of a giant hoarding in the area to register their dissent. குணசேகரன் (@GunasekaranMu) April 12, 2018 All of the protestors were dressed in black. The Chennai police also blocked a van carrying black balloons, which protesters planned to release in the air as Modi flew to the scheduled events on a helicopter. Modi will travel by helicopter from the airport to the Defence expo on the Old Mahaballipuram road, after which he will inaugurate four facilities at the Adyar Cancer Institute. He is also scheduled to visit the IIT Madras campus. As a result of the protests, major traffic snarls were also reported to have clogged the long stretch leading to the Chennai airport. Some reports suggested that Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had to walk for over a kilometre to enter the airport and receive the Prime Minister. Black flags were also spotted outside the residence of DMK chiefs Karunanidhi and MK Stalin's residences in Chennai as well as at the party's headquarters. Stalin, who is presently on a Cauvery Rights Retrieval March across Tamil Nadu, led a rally in Seerkazhi. Discontent is brewing in the state over the Central government's failure to set up the CMB and a Cauvery Water Regulatory Committee as ordered by the Supreme Court. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will fast on Thursday to protest the washout of Parliament’s budget session, for which the BJP has blamed the Congress. Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman told reporters that she would also fast to protest the disruption of Parliament by the opposition during the just-concluded Budget Session. "I will be fasting. PM Modi is also fasting. Fasting is not going to stop him from coming to Chennai," Sitharaman said, after opening the DefExpo 2018 that showcases India's capability to manufacture arms and weapons platform systems.  IANS inputs

Cauvery dispute
“Both pundits and pedestrians alike suspect and believe that this delay in getting justice is due to the elections in Karnataka and your interests in it. I want this belief to be dispelled,” states Kamal.

Makkal Needhi Maiam chief Kamal Haasan issued a video appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday urging him to do justice to the people of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka over the Cauvery issue. His appeal comes as the Prime Minister arrived in Chennai to participate DefExpo and is also scheduled to inaugurate four facilities at the Adyar Cancer Institute amidst large protests by several groups, who waved black flags and carried banners saying ‘Go back Modi’. Protesting groups have demonstrating against the Centre’s alleged failure to set up the Cauvery Management Board. In his video message, Kamal says, “My name is Kamal Haasan. This is an open appeal to the Prime Minister. I am sure you are very aware of the crisis that is gripping Tamil Nadu and the ongoing agitations for Cauvery water. I think with your previous experience for Narmada Water Board Authority, you could easily deliver the justice that Tamil Nadu is seeking for.” Kamal also pointed out that there was a widespread belief that the delay in framing a scheme in on account of the elections in Karnataka and the BJP’s interests in that state.  Appealing the Prime Minister to dispel this belief, the actor-turned-politician says, “Both pundits and pedestrians alike suspect and believe that this delay in getting justice is due to the elections in Karnataka and your interests in it. I want this belief to be dispelled. For people are more important than elections, as you well know. Thank you, sir. Please do justice for Tamil Nadu and Karnataka and see to that the Supreme Court judgement is followed. I am also sending you an open letter in case I have missed out any points in my anxiety to pass on this tumultuous moment in Tamil Nadu and people will of somehow getting water for their farmers and themselves. Thank you, sir. I am sure you will do the needful and you must. Thank you, namaste.” The Supreme Court had in its February 16 judgement directed the Centre to frame a scheme within six weeks. However, when this deadline expired on March 29, the Tamil Nadu government went to the apex court, filing a contempt of court petition against the Centre. The Centre, on the other hand, went to court, seeking clarity on the use of the phrase ‘frame a scheme’, which has given room for interpretation. While Tamil Nadu argued that scheme means Cauvery Management Board, Karnataka has said the word ‘Board’ is missing from the judgement. The Centre also sought a three-month extension from the top court, arguing that if it framed a scheme before Karnataka went to polls on May 12, it would vitiate the election process and cause massive uproar amongst the public.   Last week, however, hearing Tamil Nadu’s contempt petition, the Supreme Court had directed the Centre to frame a draft scheme by May 3. IPL 2018
While many expressed their despair, others said they would find a way to go to Pune to catch the men in yellow in action.

It was heartbreak for many die-hard Chennai Super Kings fans after the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) announced that the city will not host any Indian Premier League matches. This owing to security concerns following the massive protests by several parties and groups demanding that matches not be held when the state is in distress over the Cauvery water sharing issue. Pune will now be the new home ground for CSK, the BCCI announcement came on Thursday.   While a number of people welcomed the move to shift the venue, many CSK fans were left disappointed considering the fact that the MS Dhoni-led team had just returned to the IPL after a two-year suspension. While expressing their grief on social media platforms like Twitter, many also promised to support the team regardless of where they play. Kalai Koodam, by the Urur Olcott Kuppam Vizha, will start classes from April 15 at just Rs 100 per class.
Facebook / Urur-Olcott Kuppam Vizha - Celebrating Oneness
Over the last few years, Chennai has witnessed the coming together of several different art forms – from theru koothu to parkour. Carnatic and gaana have shared the same stage, as have folk and hip-hop. The Urur Olcott Kuppam Vizha, which started a few years ago, has contributed to this melting pot of arts in a big way. And now, its latest initiative, Kalai Koodam, is now hoping to house different ‘kalai’ (arts) under one roof (koodam). Singer Monali Sanyal Balasubramaniam, who is a part of this initiative, shares that the classes will be held at Thiruvalluvar Community Hall in Thiruvalluvar Nagar, very close to Olcott Kuppam in Besant Nagar. The weekly classes will be held on Sundays and anyone from absolutely anywhere can sign up. “The classes are very affordable at Rs 100 per month. But, of course, those who can contribute more can surely do so and this will be used to run the koodam,” says Monali. Kalai Koodam currently offers vocal music, Bharathanatyam and Parai Attam. The idea behind Kalai Koodam springs from the same ideology that powers Urur Olcott Kuppam Vizha. “The privileged class has perhaps wondered where to learn the Parai Attam and also many from the Kuppam itself are harbouring the interest to learn Carnatic and Bharathanatyam. Kalai Koodam intends to answer these questions. We plan to expand and include more art forms in the near future,” says Monali. Kalai Koodam will officially begin its first class on April 15. Vocal music classes will see a combination of Carnatic and Hindustani music, in addition to other diverse music styles. Classes will be taught by a panel of artistes. The first session of vocals will be mentored by Monali herself. Deepan will be teaching Parai, while the Shreejith Krishnan group will teach Bharathanatyam.

'Centre cannot leave farmers in distress just to win Karnataka elections': Kanimozhi to TNM

Politics
"We are not saying taking IPL away will resolve the problem," says the DMK leader.
DMK MP Kanimozhi sits on a red chair surrounded by men and women in black attire at the YMCA ground in Chennai. With the party's working President MK Stalin taking to the districts to gather support for the chorus against the centre, Kanimozhi has become the face of protests in the city.  DMK leaders and cadre along with members of other participating parties were detained and removed from areas where the Prime Minister was set to visit. The fact that he would be travelling by air and not even stepping foot into public roads, made no difference to the men in khakhi. But to TN's principle opposition party, it was a sign of victory. "The protest was definitely a success," says MP Kanimozhi, referring to agitations across the state on Thursday. "The Prime Minister and Government has decided it is not safe for him to come through the streets of Chennai. He has to break a wall between IIT and Cancer institute to go for the function and he has even taken the helicopter. I think we have got the attention of the Central Government," she remarks.  Referring to the very same 'security arrangements', MDMK chief had termed the Prime Minister a coward for refusing to face the black flags that people had readied to show their anger at the Centre. And while Kanimozhi refrained from a brash statement, she accused the Centre of playing politics using water resources. "I don't want to call anybody names. But they must understand how strongly we feel about this. Just because there is an election in Karnataka, the Central government cannot play politics using such an important resource like water," she says. "You can't play politics using that and try to win an election depriving our farmers of their livelihood," she adds. The MP and the cadre surrounding her are all dressed in black despite the heat beating down on them. Black, one of the Dravidian colours dominated the areas around the PM's venue of visits. Black banners and flags were held aloft while hundreds of black balloons were set free into the sky. But was this enough to get the Centre attention?"The Prime Minister did not mention the Cauvery Management board in his address at the Defence Expo. It is very disappointing," admits Kanimozhi. "Inspite of so many protests and leaders taking it up, the central government has not even given us a reassurance," she adds. PM Modi's refusal to acknowledge the protests instigated by his visit, gives the parties little to pin their hopes on. Even the fact that the hashtag 'Go Back Modi' trended in the first place worldwide did not get the Centre to address the matter in the state. Kanimozhi however is hopeful that the Government will now understand what the people want."Every protest is for the government and institutions to understand what people want. I hope they will understand now what the people want," she says. "The Prime minister in the Defence expo said that we are not here to lecture but we are here to listen. I hope he is listening," she adds. For these parties allying together for the cause, the fight is not just against the Centre."We said we will have a black flag demonstration and AIADMK leaders said they will show green flags. This shows their true colours. The way they detain the protesters and harass them, you can see the double face of the government," she alleged. But even these protests have received their share of criticism especially when IPL matches that were to be held in Chennai were shifted out."It is not about IPL or a protest against IPL. It is a protest for people to recognise the issue," says Kanimozhi. But has shifting matches, served any purpose at all?"Can't look at anything in isolation when there is a protest and when people are coming together to protest. We can't look at it in an isolated way and say we are against IPL or against something else. We are not saying taking IPL away will resolve the problem," she admits. "Any protest is it to get attention of the government," she adds.  The second bout of criticism came on Thursday, when BJP sympathisers claimed that showing visitors the black flag was not 'Tamil culture'."There have been black flag protests against Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi in the past," argues Kanimozhi. "Black is a form of protest for us. Periyar wore black. They should understand how we feel. It is not just here, even in Pondicherry there are protests. It is a very very very strong protest against the Centre and the state government."

Following a Public Interest Litigation filed by a fisherman in Besant Nagar, a probe has been ordered by the Madras High Court to look into encroachments by the Anna Velankanni Church. According to the Times of India, a joint probe by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority and the Chennai Corporation has been ordered to inspect the church’s encroachment of a water body in Odaima Nagar. As per a report in The Hindu, a division bench of Justices M Sathyanarayanan and P Rajamanickam directed the investigating authorities to file a report regarding the matter by June 5, “along with supporting documents and photographs.” A famous tourist spot as well as a place of worship for many in the city and the world over, the Church is located on the far south east of the beach, leading to Tiger Varadachari Road. The PIL filed by Gopi a fisherman from the Odaikuppam hamlet contends that the church has encroached on a water body in addition to being in violation of the Coastal Regulation Zone. According to The New Indian Express, the PIL requested the removal of unauthorised constructions put up by the shrine. Times of India also quotes Gopi as saying, “There used to be a pond in the hamlet which is our only source of drinking water, as we live close to the shore. This also reflects in the revenue records prior to 1987.” According to the petitioner’s counsel, legal recourse was sought after the petitioner found that the church had announced the construction of a new building. Counsel Suryaprakash reportedly said, “Every time the villagers make complaints to the authorities, assurance is given that the encroachment would be removed and steps would be taken to restore the pond. But to the shock of the petitioner, a huge board has been put by the church management informing the public that a new church is going to be constructed on the land. The church is trying to build a new structure not only on the encroached water body, but also violating coastal regulation, within 100 meters from the high tideline of the shore.”

CSK out of the den: How the team’s sponsors will be affected by the shift to Pune

According to sources within the management, the sponsors understand the ground realities and have conveyed that their association is not a one-season affair.

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) management is understandably upset at having been forced to play the remaining six matches outside their den at Chepauk. But despite the exit of the IPL matches from Chennai, it is unlikely that Brand CSK will be adversely affected. In fact, the internal assessment of Team CSK is that its brand value will go up.  This is because the perception is that CSK is the victim here, made to move out of Chennai for no fault of theirs. Add to that the fact that the team that commands a very loyal following, was out of action in the IPL for two years and when they returned, they played two well-fought matches, entertaining the crowd with exciting fare. Analysts believe this has resulted in the emotional connect with the team going up a notch or two, and expect the remaining CSK matches to garner unprecedented TV viewership. The brands associated with CSK, about 14 of them, have expressed their support to the team. They include big names like Nippon Paint, Gulf Oil, Muthoot Group and Parle. According to sources within the management, the sponsors understand the ground realities and have conveyed that their association is not a one-season affair. A major reason why most of the brands tied up with CSK was because of the MS Dhoni factor. The former India captain who has led CSK to two title wins, remains a huge draw.  But on the ground, there are practical issues to deal with. Many of the sponsors were looking at targeting the geographical spread of a Chennai and Tamil Nadu market through contests and promotional events associated with the IPL. Having lost out in the last two seasons because of CSK's absence, 2018 was the year to strike gold. But their dealer engagement of some of the brands is in the deep south, and moving to Pune will mean these activities will take a hit. They will now have to reinvent the wheel, working out a different strategy in a new market.  Those with zero presence in the western India market will lose out. For instance, one of the sponsors is a wifi service provider and is based out of only Chennai and Bengaluru, and would find it difficult to leverage its association with CSK this season.  While the brands that are visible on the uniform of the players – about 10 of them – will still get their mileage thanks to the television broadcast, those with a non-uniform association will get impacted adversely.  The team management understands the difficulty this shift has put everyone in and is willing to go that extra yard to provide an extra deliverable to the sponsor. This is also to ensure that the brand renews the association with CSK. This is likely to be done through some extra shoots for social media platforms promoting the brand, or on memorabilia.  One of the reasons why CSK is not overtly worried about moving out of their comfort zone is because as a brand, it has been marketed differently. Unlike other IPL teams, CSK managers point out that the fans market the team, especially on the digital platform.  A team like Kolkata Knight Riders is driven by owner Shahrukh Khan's popularity and Mumbai Indians, after riding initially on Sachin Tendulkar's name, has the strong Reliance brand backing it. CSK, in contrast, has been marketed as a brand that relies more on its cricket and fan engagement. Whistle podu and Thunderclap are terms closely associated with CSK, whose fans convert their connect with the team into a celebration, a carnival of sorts. The Tamizhan lingo, attire and Kollywood connect, all combine to present a product that is uniquely Chennai.  The fan is also made to feel special at CSK. At the Tamil Nadu Premier League matches, those wearing yellow jerseys were allowed free entry into the stadiums. Over the years, the colour yellow has acquired a special place in the hearts of CSK fans.  In 2016, a water shortage in Maharashtra forced the BCCI to move some of their ‘home' matches to Visakhapatnam. The move meant both Mumbai Indians and Rising Pune Supergiants had to play outside the state. Dhoni was then captain of RPS and therefore knows a thing or two about cricket getting affected by circumstances which are not in the control of the teams.  The shift to Pune is unlikely to affect the performance of the players, professionals as they are, trained to excel in any conditions. The hardcore fans can be expected to travel to Pune to cheer their team, converting the city stadium into a sea of yellow to make them feel at home.  Time to ask Pune: Are you ready to Whistle Podu? Theni forest fire
The Bodi Town police had filed an FIR against Peter Van Geit on March 15, charging him with IPC Section 304 (Culpable homicide not amounting to murder).
Facebook: Peter Van Geit
Over a month after the Theni forest fires that claimed the lives of 23 trekkers in the Kurangani hills, the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court granted anticipatory bail to Peter Van Geit of the Chennai Trekking Club (CTC). Thirty nine trekkers, who were trapped in the fire on March 11, came in two groups. While Tour De India Holidays, led by Prabhu, organised a trek for 12 people from Erode, the CTC had taken 27 persons on the two-day trek at Kurangani forest. Both organisers of the trek conducted by the Chennai Trekking Club, Nisha and Dhivya, were killed in the fires. According to the Forest Department, Arun Prabhakar and Vibin Dhamodharan were “taken as supporters” for the trek. They were trained in rescue operations and survival skills, said the petitions. They too had died in the fires. Prabhu of Tour De India Holidays was arrested on March 14, three days after the tragedy. There were multiple demands for arresting Peter too, but the anticipatory bail comes as a big relief for him. While Peter Van Geit has claimed in his petition that he had knowledge of the trek, he denied having organised it. Peter a scapegoat? Madras High Court Justice GR Swaminathan granted bail upon the condition that Peter not leave the country until the present case against him is disposed. Denying being the founder of the CTC, the petition states that he was a trustee of the voluntary organisation with free membership. The petition clarifies that CTC is a nonprofit entity registered as a trust under a trust deed by Prabhakar Meyappan. Peter’s counsel requested that he be given anticipatory bail since “there was a chance for him to be treated badly in the event of his arrest.” The counsel also said that the police had made Peter the scapegoat based on misinformation. Responsibility The petition states, "The other team from Chennai was actually organised as Women's Day Special Trek by Ms Divya Muthukumar and Ms Nisha Tamiloli jointly, who are experienced trekkers.""The participants are carefully selected by the organisers themselves based on their fitness levels to take up the strenuous trekking expeditions. Even in the format that is circulated among the volunteers requiring them to join in the trekking expedition it is clearly mentioned that such expeditions involve inherent risks of several nature, including death, and CTC and its organisers are not responsible for any accidents or injuries during the event or for any loss or damage to their personal property," the petition states. CTC Response In a response soon after the tragedy, the CTC came out with an official response to the mounting allegations against them, stating that necessary permissions had been obtained for the trek. They also claimed that the trekking route from Kurangani to Kollukumalai on top was a regular for both local villagers and trekkers. The Bodi Town police had filed an FIR against Peter Van Geit on March 15, charging him with Section 174 Cr Pc C(accidental fire), 336(Act endangering life or personal safety of others), 337(Causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 338(Causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 304(2) IPC(culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 21 D of the Tamil Nadu Forest Act, 1882(Penalties for trespass or damage in reserved forests and acts prohibited in such forests).

Cauvery Protest
The MDMK leader broke down at a press conference and appealed the public not to take drastic measures over the non-formation of the Board.
A day after massive protests over the non-formation of the Cauvery Management board rocked Chennai, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam chief Vaiko's nephew immolated his self in Virudhunagar, allegedly demanding the Board be set-up. Saravana Suresh, a 50-year-old businessman, has been admitted to a hospital in Madurai and is in a critical condition. According to the Times of India, Saravana told his wife, Amudha, that he was going for a walk, and left around 5am. He then doused himself with kerosene and set himself on fire in a playground in the area at around 7am. Reports claim Suresh raised slogans demanding the constitution of the Cauvery Management Board as set himself on fire. He has sustained 80% burns, as per reports. The police said that morning walkers spotted him and called for an ambulance immediately. Saravana was first taken to the Virudhunagar Government Hospital and, later, to a private hospital in Madurai where he is currently undergoing treatment.  Reports suggest that he told his wife that he was upset over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Tamil Nadu on Friday in the backdrop of the Centre’s failure to constitute the Cauvery Management Board.  Addressing the media in Chennai, Vaiko broke down and began to weep. He appealed to the public to not take such drastic measures."I beg the youngsters of Tamil Nadu to not immolate themselves anymore. Please let us stand and fight," he said.  Vaiko reportedly said that though Saravana was not holding a party post, he had been working for the party for several years.  On Thursday, a 25-year-old man from Erode committed suicide over the non-formation of the Board. Dharmalingam had written on the wall of his house that he strongly opposed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Tamil Nadu and urged the Central government to constitute the Cauvery Management Board. He suffered 90% burn injuries and passed away.

Tamil folk singer Kovan has been arrested in Tiruchy for singing the viral Rath Yatra song slamming Prime Minister Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party at a recent protest against the non-formation of the Cauvery Management Board.  The police who entered his home on Friday arrested him after a scuffle with his friends and family, who demanded to know why he was being taken into custody. Footage that has emerged from the arrest show policemen and Kovan’s friends getting into a heated argument with police officers, who shoved past the folk singer’s friends, who were blocking their entry.   The police eventually bundle Kovan into a waiting van. Confirming his arrest to TNM, one police officer at the Tiruchy Cantonment police station said, “We received the complaint on April 11 from the BJP youth wing leader Gowtham. He alleges that Kovan sang at the Cauvery dispute protest in a manner that brings disrepute to the Prime Minister’s name and post.” Speaking to TNM, Raju of the Makkal Adhigara Iyakkam who was protesting along with Kovan says, "He sang the same song that has over a lakh views on YouTube. We were protesting for the rights of our farmers outside the Tiruchy Head Post Office on March 24. Thousands of people were there. They have not authoritatively told us exactly why he has been arrested. They whisked him away like a terrorist." Kovan has been booked under IPC sections 153a (Promoting enmity between different groups), Section 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and, 505(1b) (Whoever makes, publishes or circulates any statement whereby any person may be induced to commit an offence against the State or against the public tranquillity).  He has since been granted bail by a court in Tiruchy.  The Rama Rajya Ratha Yatra commenced from Ayodhya on February 13 and entered Tamil Nadu on March 23. It was met with stiff opposition from political parties in the state with section 144 clamped in the district of Tirunelveli. The song uploaded on Kovan’s Facebook page made a mockery of the Rath Yatra and PM Modi for the BJP’s divisive politics. Kovan and his troupe of folk singers and dancers also talk of how Modi’s slippers, much like Rama’s are ruling Tamil Nadu. In the video, Kovan and a group of folk artists start by asking, “Where are you holding your rath yatra?” They go on to add, “This will be the last yatra for Rama rajya.” The song went on to equate Modi rule with the rule of Rama, the hero of the epic Ramayana who is worshiped by Hindus as an avatar of Vishnu. “Rama rajya is Modi rajya, even if you are an Aryan stooge, your destruction is for sure,” the lyrics read. Taking a dig at the AIADMK government, which is seen as a puppet in the hands of the BJP government, Kovan’s troupe also sing, “Rama ruled with a pair of slippers in the Ramayana, Modi’s slippers are ruling Tamil Nadu.” This wasn’t the first time that Kovan has been arrested. In October 2015, the Tamil folk singer was arrested by the police on charges of sedition, attempt to create enmity between social groups, and sale of defamatory material. On that occasion, Kovan had taken on the Tamil Nadu government’s liquor shops – TASMAC – and made references to the then Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. His arrest was slammed by human rights organisations, social activists, political parties and student bodies at the time. The southern districts of Tamil Nadu got some relief from the blazing sun on Friday thanks to the heavy showers it witnessed. Tamil Nadu Met Department Director, S Balachander, speaking to reporters on Friday, forecast good rainfall on April 13 and 14 in the southern parts of the state. So far, Coonoor has recorded 10 cm of rain, Kotagiri 8 cm and Sivagiri 7 cm of rain. He also hinted that a few regions in the Western Ghats might receive heavy rainfall.  The summer rains are a result of a low-pressure system formed in the northern part of the Indian Ocean. Balachander has also warned south-district fishermen to not venture out into the seas for the next couple of days. “Maldives, Kumari and Lakshadweep areas are best avoided. The wind speed is predicted to be around 40- 50 kmph,” he said. TN weather blogger, Pradeep John, also posted on his Facebook page, Tamil Nadu Weatherman, about the expected rains in south TN. “Today and tomorrow seem the best days for rains in South TN and west expecting a massive ball of clouds which blooms on daily basin (sic). Delta will get rains,” he wrote. But can Chennai hope for cooler weather in the coming days? Speaking to TNM, Balachander clarified that the depression in south will in no way affect the city.  A circular from regional Met office reads, "The sky condition is likely to be partly cloudy. Maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 35 and 27 degrees Celsius respectively." On March 13, southern districts such as Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi and Ramanathapuram received good rainfall from the low-pressure system in the Arabian Sea. On March 14, Pradeep posted that Thoothukudi had recorded its heaviest rainfall received in one day, measuring 200 mm, in the last 63 years. With summer beginning to intensify in the state, the sudden showers are a welcome relief.

'No saffronisation of medical institutes': ABVP's TN summit scrapped after protests

Controversy
MGR University was one of the other sponsors; doctors questioned how a government institute was holding an event in partnership with a political outfit.
An all-India medical and dental conference to be held at MGR University had to be scrapped owing to the severe backlash it faced on social media once it came to people’s attention that the Akhil Bharatiya Vidya Parishad was one of the organisers. Terming it an attempt to ‘saffronise medical institutes’, doctors called to boycott the event on social media. After receiving the invitations, doctors noticed that the ABVP was organising the event along with MGR University and Elayabharatham Seva Trust. The event, according to doctors, was to push for the National Medical Council in the place of the Medical Council of India. The Directorate of Medical Education has sent a notice to the conference committee patron Dr S Subbaiah. He is the head of the Oncology Department at Kilpauk Medical College Hospital and is also a national president of the ABVP. He had approached MGR University to use the auditorium for the event. "We immediately began questioning why a government institute was holding an event in partnership with a political outfit. This will affect the secular fabric of the Medical Council of India. Saffronisation of medical education should not be allowed," says Dr Ravindranath, General Secretary, Doctor's Association for Social Equality. "We were going to start a signature campaign against the saffronisation, but the event was called off before that."  MGR University, meanwhile, claims that it did not know that the ABVP was involved in the event. “We had allowed them to conduct the event at the auditorium because it was a students’ welfare conference. Since a professor asked, we didn't probe the matter too much. We did not know that the ABVP was involved,” says Dr Geethalakshmi, the Director of Medical Education. She further adds that a show-cause notice has been issued to Dr Subbaiah over the matter. This is reportedly because government staff cannot have political affiliation. Dr Subbiah, who was elected to the post in December 2017, has meanwhile told Times of India that ABVP has no political affiliation. “Our ideologies are the same as the BJP or RSS, but that does not affiliate us with them. Our web page clearly mentions that we are not a political party. I need not have government permission to be a part of students’ association,” he reportedly said.
