AIADMK minister Dindigul Sreenivasan says 'Amma robbed money', TTV wants him sacked

The speech has angered TTV Dhinakaran so much that he has asked AIADMK to sack Sreenivasan.

Dindigul C Sreenivasan, the Minister for Forests, has either decided to stop living in denial, or has had a major faux paus moment, we’re not quite sure which.  In a shocking statement, the AIADMK leader and state minister referred to money ‘stolen by Amma’, while taking a dig at AMMK chief and RK Nagar MLA, TTV Dhinakaran.  At an event to commemorate the 'grand success' of 'retrieving the Cauvery', Sreenivasan was addressing AIADMK cadre in Dindigul on Monday. In a reference to the 18 MLAs who petitioned the Governor in support of the split away Dhinakaran faction in September last year, Sreenivasan said, "If 18 people go to the Governor and give petitions, can we be quiet? Legally they are being given 7, 15, 20 days, and upto a month's time. Without using that time, they are happily going to Mysuru and America with the help of the money given to them by Dhinakaran, which was robbed by Amma." Yes, we double checked.  Sreenivasan's speech has angered TTV Dhinakaran so much that he has demanded that the former be sacked. "If the 18 MLAs had gone with a leader greater than Amma, we would have been proud. But he's a cheat and rowdy who was cast aside by Amma. They act as though it is on their mercy that the government is running," Sreenivasan had said in his speech.  In a press statement given on Tuesday night, TTV Dhinakaran said, "They referred to Amma as mother and God when she was alive. Now when she is not there, people like Dindigul Sreenivasan, who she raised to the stature of a minister, are tarnishing her reputation. I expect those politicians who claim they are running Amma's government to immediately remove him from his post." He however added that he did not expect Edapadi Palaniswami to react to his demand. "But they definitely won't do that (sack Sreenivasan). When their only thought is to retain MLAs in order to sustain the government, they will not be concerned about Honourable Amma's reputation being tainted. They only consider staying in power as important." While Sreenivasan said ‘Amma’ – the monicker all cadre use for Jayalalithaa – he could of course turn around and say he was referring to ‘Chinnamma’ – the term used for Sasikala. We will only know when we know.  The late Chief Minister was posthumously convicted by the Supreme Court as Accused No 1 in the Disproportionate Assets case, but AIADMK leaders have been largely tight lipped about the issue, except to hit out at Sasikala.  Sreenivasan's comments are shocking given the tight grip the AIADMK supremo had on the party. Not even Ministers representing their own departments were allowed to speak to the press. However, Sreenivasan is barely new to controversy. During one of the many twists and turns in the party following Jayalalithaa’s death, he had announced on stage that the AIADMK leaders including himself had lied about what had happened when their leader was in the hospital.  “We would have told lies that she (Jayalalithaa) had idlis and people met her. The truth is that nobody saw her,” he had said, apologising to people.   Read: 'No more banners, cutouts,' Stalin tells DMK cadre after outrage over dug-up footpath

The AIADMK has kick-started a campaign in Tamil Nadu to start a 'Twitter army'

This week-long campaign comes at a time when the AIADMK's latest membership drive proved to be a damp squib.
If you caught hold of the latest edition of AIADMK mouthpiece 'Nammadhu Amma', you would have noticed an open call for the formation of a new 'army'.  Ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the AIADMK which is facing falling memberships has resorted to creating a 'Twitter army' to make their voices louder than the cacophony of criticism against them.  As per their advertisement, every existing member has been instructed to ensure at least five others (members and persons not politically affiliated) open Twitter accounts.  They have then been asked to take a screenshot of the new accounts, post it on the micro blogging site and tag 10 others. This initiative by the IT wing of the party, is an effort to control the discourse over the party on Twitter.  Currently, only 2000 members of the party are active on Twitter and they are hoping that this campaign will take the number to over 10,000. "We have a lot of supporters on Facebook and comparatively the numbers are lower on Twitter. But this is the site where a lot of information and knowledge sharing happens," says G Ramachandran who heads the AIADMK's IT wing. "We want to increase our base here in order to propagate schemes by the government. This will also help counter propaganda against us in a decent manner," he claims.  But how exactly are they going to stop it from becoming an 'army' of trolls?"We will strictly control the content put out by the members. Once we have the numbers we will have WhatsApp groups where we will instruct them," says Ramachandran.  Recently, Hari Prabhakaran a prominent AIADMK face on Twitter was removed from the party following derogatory remarks on the platform about journalists. "If anyone doesn't toe the party line, we will take the required action," he assures.  This week long campaign comes at a time when the AIADMK's latest membership drive proved to be a damp squib. This came as a rude shock for the party that boasts of having 1.5 crore members. The drive reportedly began at the end of January and the party distributed nine lakh applications for renewing existing membership and adding new members. But of this only 2.5 lakh forms have been filled and submitted. Each form accounts for 25 people. The final deadline is June 30 and they have only 62.5 lakh members so far.  Will this 'Twitter army' now seek to control the impending damage?"This is not directly connected to the drive but it will definitely help the numbers," says Ramachandran.

The move comes a day after government trucks were pressed into service to remove a sulphuric acid leak.
Two days after government trucks began removal of sulphuric leakages from the factory, the Vedanta-owned Sterlite has approached the High Court seeking a restoration of power supply. According to a report in The New Indian Express, General Manager(Legal) of the Vedanta Group has filed an 18-page petition with the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court. A day after 13 civilians were gunned by the police during the anti-Sterlite protests on May 22, the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board has also issued directions for closure and disconnection of power supply to the Unit. This was followed by the closure of the plant on May 28. However, early on Monday, a sulphuric acid leak was discovered at the plant and the government had pressed into service trucks that would remove the discharge. According to one report in the Times of India, with the absence of power supply, acid was pumped through diesel generators. The petition also calls for permission to access the plant in order to undertake maintenance work. The petition alleges that the power shutdown has affected minimum functioning of the plant, causing hardship to the employees. Further, the company alleges, “The government ought to have taken opinion from industry experts on safe shutdown of the plant.” In a response to the leak, the company said in a statement, “In fact, anticipating such incidents in the absence of regular maintenance, we have been requesting the state government to give us limited manpower access and minimal power supply so that mandatory safety audits at the smelter can be regularly carried out. That request is still pending. We once again urge the government to give us at least restricted access to the copper smelter. We have had no access to the plant ever since it was suddenly sealed and locked with effect from May 28, 2018.” Also read: Sulphuric leak in Sterlite plant: Thoothukudi officials examine unit

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has expressed hope that Tamil Nadu authorities will take action in the Salem organ donation case based on its inquiry. The Chief Minister was speaking of an incident in May when a family from Kerala accused a hospital in Salem of forcing them to donate organs of a family member who was brain dead, in return for forfeiture of the bill.   Replying to a submission by K Babu, an MLA from the Communist Party of India (M), the CM also said a case has been filed in the Thiyagadurgam police station regarding the accident. “I received a reply from the TN CM on May 26 saying that he has deputed the Director of Medical and Rural Health Services to conduct a detailed inquiry and that he has given instructions to the concerned authorities to provide the best medical care to those injured in the accident. The injured have since been discharged from that hospital and expert medical care has been provided to them,” the letter said. A vehicle with seven persons met with an accident on May 18, in Kallakurichi, near Salem in Tamil Nadu. Three persons were critically injured and were taken to Vinayaka Mission Super Specialty Hospital (VIMS) in Salem. P Manikandan, one of the three who were admitted in the hospital died on May 20. Shankar, Manikandan’s brother told TNM that the hospital did not give them correct update since the admission and on May 20, they informed the family that Manikandan was brain dead. The family had alleged that the hospital authorities demanded Rs.3 lakh for the treatment expenses. Shankar also said that the hospital asked them to donate Manikandan’s organs and that they would forfeit the bill since the family had no money to pay. The family had then written a letter to Kerala CM explaining their situation and requesting him to intervene. The CM wrote to the TN CM in the last week of May asking for an inquiry. However, VP Chandrasekaran, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of VIMS had denied Shankar’s allegation. Speaking to TNM, he said, “On May 19, we had got a surety from the owner of Manikandan’s vehicle that he would pay the bill. And he did that later. So then, why would we ask money from the family?” Two CCTV footages from the hospital on May 21 also show the COO in consultation with Manikandan’s family. In one of the footages, Chandrasekaran can be seen explaining the procedure to be followed while organ donation and that unanimous consent of the family is required for donating organs. The second footage shows Manikandan’s family members signing the papers. Although Shankar said that they had no other option but to sign the papers, one cannot see any signs of opposition being raised by the family in the footage. The COO added that the investigators have visited VIMS for enquiry the first time on May 26 and examined the documents and the CCTV footage. The investigators also visited the hospital the second time on June 10, to reconfirm the documents. Read: 'Was coerced to donate my brother's organs,' says Kerala man, TN hospital denies charge

Kovai woman loses Rs 4 lakh from her bank account, alleges collusion by bank officials

The victim alleges that bank officials issued a fake ATM card to the suspect without verifying credentials, which was used to steal her money.
Kuniyamuthur resident Hussain Biwi was shocked when the officials at the VH Road Branch of Indian Bank told her that the Rs 4,31,300 she had in her account was missing. On May 16 she went to the bank to withdraw money and was faced with a weird request: the officers asked her to come the next day with a family member. An unsuspecting Hussain Biwi took her son Abdul Raheem with her to the bank the next day. The officers informed them that the account was empty and that all the money had been withdrawn. Speaking to TNM, Abdul Raheem says, “The Bank Manager showed me a picture of some other woman and asked me who it was. I said I don’t know her. He then said that my mother’s savings account was empty and all her money has been withdrawn by the woman in the picture.” The woman in that picture has been identified as Najima Begum, who has allegedly made off with the money from Hussain Biwi’s account. The bank officials further informed Hussain Biwi and her son that an ATM card was issued to the woman in the picture after she submitted documents claiming ownership to the particular account. “How can the bank issue ATM card without verifying credentials?” wonders Abdul Raheem. His mother submitted a complaint on Wednesday to the Commissioner of Police in Coimbatore regarding this issue. “I had gone to the Coimbatore Corporation to renew my life certificate in April. I gave the form, my old life certificate and bank passbook to those who fill the forms there. They kept the passbook with them and asked me to come after two days. I also went there and got everything back and submitted it to the Corporation Office. I got my life certificate renewed on April 5,” says the complaint. The complaint also states that she had been receiving her late husband’s pension for the past 38 years in the account, in addition to her own pension. “My money has been withdrawn using a fake ATM card. It is not possible to create a fake ATM card with my details without the help of bank officials. Hence I am suspicious of the bank manager. Hence I request you to take action and help me get my money back,” said the complaint. “We have complained to the bank on May 18 regarding this issue, but there has been no reply from their side. Since it has been more than a month, we have submitted a complaint to the Commissioner of Police today,” said Abdul Raheem. Speaking to TNM, a senior police officer with knowledge of the issue said that the case has been transferred to the cyber cell. “Since the complainants have alleged collusion by bank officials, we will send summons to them and proceed with the case appropriately. We need to know what loophole was used and how this was done,” he said. A senior officer in the VH Road Branch of Indian Bank also told TNM that the investigation is in progress. “Our Internal Vigilance Department is also investigating this issue. We have also filed a case regarding this with the police and are trying to catch hold of Najima Begum. We will write to our head office to reimburse the amount to the original account holder at the earliest.” Read: Stalker stabs Andhra woman to death a day before her wedding, then kills self

New reasons to say no? RTI rejected for not attaching proof of citizenship

Right to Information
Jayaraman Venkatesan had sought information from the Health Department regarding a medical college in the state
Image for representation
Even as news of the Central Government seeking to amend the Right to Information Act 2005 has activists worried, a Tamil Nadu-based RTI activist has been asked to prove his Indian citizenship for a reply to his query. Jayaraman Venkatesan had filed an RTI query with the Health Department, seeking answers on the attendance of housekeeping staff at Dharmapuri Medical College. According to a Governance Now report in November 2017, there were reports of irregularities in the outsourcing of security and housekeeping services in as many as 37 government hospitals and 20 medical colleges affiliated to the Directorate of Medical Education. Speaking to TNM, Jayaraman of Arappor Iyakkam, says, “I had filed an RTI with Dharmapuri Medical College regarding attendance of housekeeping and security staff. The PIO (Press Information Officer) replied saying that I have not attached proof of being an Indian citizen. Therefore he has returned the entire petition in full. It is not mandatory. The practice in the state is that you declare that you’re an Indian citizen. The law says you have to provide information to Indian citizens only. Only Indian citizens can access the information. As long as you declare that you’re an Indian citizen, the standard practise has been that the government provides the information. They do not reject on these flimsy grounds. Even if someone wants to technically say that proof must be attached, they must have asked for it. He should not have returned the entire petition in original, rejecting the application. That is unwarranted.” Jayaraman says that this nitpicking, however, is not new, “We have encountered this earlier as well and had taken up the issue with the Health Secretary who had said that he would make sure people don’t reject information on such flimsy grounds. He did pass on the information to the PIOs telling them not to reject petitions on these grounds. In spite of it, they are basically finding innovative ways to reject information.” He further went on to say, “Lot of RTIs are being filed which are then being rejected on the basis of false technical reasons. For example, when we ask for purchase orders, they reject our request claiming ‘commercial confidence and trade secrets’. We are seeking purchase order of the government for which public money is being paid to the contractor to do public work. That is government record. In these ways they are finding different methods to delay information.” Jayaraman blames the State Information Commission (SIC) for a lot of these delays. The SIC is tasked with ensuring the implementation of the RTI Act in the state. Making the SIC body independent would provide a solution to the issue, according to Jayaraman. “The State Information Commission is not working properly. It is biased; they don’t want to share information. This is the difficulty we are facing. Even if the appeals and cases go to SIC, we have a very non functional body. Unless it is made functional and reasonably independent, nothing will change. The information of the applicant should not be shared with a third party. In one case of encroachment, the tehsildar gave the contact information of the applicant to the builders who then called us to enquire about whether we have filed RTI. The SIC needs to do its duty and monitor all of this,” he said. He further added that public authorities are not maintaining duly catalogued and indexed records and posting them online, as per Section 4 of the RTI. “Once they voluntarily post it, the number of RTIs will decrease. They would not have the same amount of workload since different people may be asking for the same information.”

This man travelled from Coimbatore to hug Bhadra, the dog who was thrown off roof

At June 18, 68-year-old Sadasivan struck one thing off his bucket-list. He hugged the very happy and healthy Bhadra, who couldn’t stop wagging her tail.
Getting a hug has been a long pursuit for this 68-year-old man from Coimbatore. Rewind to two years ago: Sadasivan was sitting in his living room in Coimbatore, reading about the horrific incident of a dog being thrown down from a roof by two medical students. The video affected him so much that he decided he had to see the animal. He carefully cut out every single article about the dog Bhadra from newspapers, and then began his search. In July 2016, Bhadra was thrown off the roof by a medical student while his friend filmed it. The video of the cruelty went viral, and while the dog was initially feared dead, she was later found alive. Bhadra was reported to have suffered two spinal fractures, making her limp while she walked. The men who threw her were suspended from college. They were arrested by the police, but released on bail soon after. “I felt bad for Bhadra. It was, after all, a poor voiceless animal and I couldn’t imagine the trauma it went through. It really affected me,” Sadasivan says. A year back when he visited Chennai, Sadasivan went to the Kundrathur police station to get more information, as the incident had taken place in that area. However, they didn’t have much to tell him. Being a retired police officer with over 15 years of experience, he decided to put his investigation skills back to use. Sadasivan figured that the route to Bhadra was through her caretakers. Antony Rubin and a few other animal activists had rescued the dog and given her a new home. Karthik Dhandapani, long-time Blue Cross volunteer, and his mother had taken Bhadra under their care. After a few trips to the police station and the post office, Sadasivan finally zeroed in on Rubin’s address. He knocked on his door to find an unassuming Rubin who was trying to figure out whether this man’s request was real. At 8:30 pm on June 18, Sadasivan struck one thing off his bucket-list as he hugged the very happy and healthy Bhadra, who couldn’t stop wagging her tail. “It was sweet to know that Bhadra was not forgotten in a few months and how much her story has affected people far and wide. It was heart-warming to see how much people care for animals,” says Antony says. Karthik too was moved by Sadasivan’s efforts to meet Bhadra. “I was very touched to meet this old man who had come all the way to meet her. I always am so happy when anyone comes to meet Bhadra. I love to share that happiness with as many people,” he says. Well, this isn’t the first time Sadasivan has gone on such a conquest. Some time back when he read about a 22-year-old Dalit man, Shankar, who was hacked to death in broad daylight for marrying a woman from the Thevar community, Sadasivan went to Udumalpet to meet the widow. The AIIMS in Tamil Nadu will be set up on a budget of Rs 1,500 crores.
Tamil Nadu is all set to receive an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Thoppur near Madurai. Speaking to the reporters on Wednesday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami said that former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa had requested the central government to sanction an AIIMS to Tamil Nadu, which was sanctioned in 2015-16. “A team from the Centre visited five locations to establish AIIMS. The team visited Chengalpattu (Kanchipuram district), Sengipatti (Thanjavur district), Thoppur (Madurai district), Perundurai (Erode district), and Pudukkottai (Pudukkottai district) and chose Madurai for establishing AIIMS. The order has been sent to our Health Secretary,” the Chief Minister said. The 750-bed teaching hospital will be spread over 200 acres and will have facilities to accommodate 100 MBBS students and 60 nursing students. It will be established on a budget of Rs 1,500 crores. The central government has requested the state government to provide the land, water supply, electricity and four-lane road connectivity to the proposed AIIMS. Expressing his heartfelt thanks in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Palaniswami said: "On behalf of the people of Tamil Nadu and me, I thank you, Sir, for selecting the establishment of a new AIIMS at Thoppur in Madurai district." He also wrote that establishing AIIMS would ‘substantially augment the facilities in the State for providing quality medical education, research and also ensure high-end tertiary level health care in the public sector to benefit the poor and middle classes of the State.’ Furthermore, he assured that the state government would provide all necessary support to the central government to facilitate the commencement of work.

Acid leak in Sterlite grave, Thoothukudi in for catastrophe: Vedanta

Sterlite Plant
Sterlite alleges that the leak is an act of sabotage and has submitted a plea to Madurai High Court demanding restoration of power supply.
The management of the Sterlite Copper plant in Thoothukudi has submitted an 18-page writ petition at the Madurai High Court demanding restoration of power supply at the plant to deal with the sulphuric acid leak. The smelter has told the court that the sulphuric acid leak in the plant which the district administration has called 'minor' could in fact pose 'grave risk and danger' to the unit and the area surrounding it.  This petition from Sterlite comes after the district administration discovered the leak during a routine check by officials on Monday. Following this, efforts were made to remove the chemical and other hazardous products from the unit. Thoothukudi collector Sandeep Nanthuri maintained that the situation was under control and that there was nothing to worry. But according to Sterlite's version, the leak is 'severe'. Multiple requests from the company to the state government for access to the plant have fallen on deaf ears and they have thus approached the court. "The petitioner found that there is a severe leakage from pipe flanges and the same cannot be arrested as the pipe flanges are submerged in acid pool collected in the dykes provided around the acid storage tank," says Sterlite. "The Petitioner therefore addressed communication dated 16.06.2018 and 17.06.2018 to the 8th Respondent, requesting urgent intervention in the matter and once again sought minimum supply of electricity and manpower to evacuate the acid at the earliest," argues Sterlite.  Sterlite further alleges that the leakage is an act of sabotage and says, "there is currently insufficient security in and around the plant and there is thus a grave risk and danger especially because there are other tanks as well as flammable materials within the same area." The copper smelter warns of catastrophic consequences due to the district administration's 'indifference'. "The plant has a further 7-8 tanks of sulphuric acid, which if left unattended could result in similar leakages and thus graver consequences to the plant itself and surrounding areas. A disaster at the plant would have very serious repercussions and the authorities are turning a deaf ear to the repeated entreaties of the petitioner and its employees. Further, due to the tense situation prevailing and the Government's stated objective of permanently closing the plant, its (Sterlite) employees and officers are unable to even secure an appointment with the Government officials," says the petitioner.  According to Sterlite, the unit produces 1 million MT of sulphuric acid per annum. The tanks and associated pipelines they are held in, have to be monitored regularly to observe any signs of leakages. If the acid which leaks comes in contact with water, which is possible during the rains, it could cause a vigorous reaction releasing high amount of heat and fumes."Any such catastrophe would result in not only grave loss of lives and assets in and around the plant premises, but would also be of dire consequence to the environment in as much as the chances of the acid seeping into the soil and water are high," the company warns.  Citing the above reasons, Sterlite has requested immediate access to the unit to examine the remaining storage facilities. They have alleged that the government and district administration have disconnected electricity without taking into account the necessary maintenance work.  It has accused the government of 'public appeasement' and apprehended a serious and palpable threat to the safety of the plant and adjoining areas in the face of the leak.  Read: Kovai woman loses Rs 4 lakh from her bank account, alleges collusion by bank officials

The murder reportedly took place 10 days ago and the cops managed to trace the family by sticking posters around the locality.
In a shocking incident, a man has confessed to murdering his 21-year-old son with mental health issues as he believed nobody will take care of him. Nawazuddin, 49, a samosa seller from Ambedkar Nagar Second Street in Thiruvottiyur, confessed to the cops that the had taken his son Muhammad Hussain to the railway tracks and slit his throat as he felt nobody would take care of him, according to a report in The Times of India. The murder reportedly took place on June 10, and the cops identified the body only after sticking posters of the boy in the area and asking local residents. Police had initially believed it to be a train accident, but the post-mortem report confirmed that the boy's throat was slit. Nawazuddin stated that he had taken his son for a walk on June 8 and then committed the murder. He returned home and told his wife Zarina and their neighbours that he had admitted Hussain to a care home in Coimbatore. “He told us he was worried that there would be none to care for his son after his own death. He said that the young man had on many occasions turned violent and attacked them (Nawazuddin and his wife),” police said. According to the family, their son had to be kept under constant watch as leaving him alone was a risk. Several neighbours in their locality too were clueless about the couple having a son. The couple have a daughter who is married apart from the son.

How two Chennai men found an iPhone thief by luring him with a fake job offer

The man and his friend had visited an Airtel showroom in Chennai when their phones went missing.
Simeon and Jaffer
When Simeon, a young medical representative, went to the Airtel showroom in Purasawalkam, Chennai on Wednesday, little did he expect that less than 24 hours later he would be on the trail of a thief. Simeon had lost his nano SIM card and went to get it replaced. However, as soon as he stepped out of the showroom, he realised he did not have his phone on his person. When he went back inside, the phone was nowhere to be found. Though he filed a police complaint, a chain snatching incident took prominence at the Kilpauk police station. Simeon then called on his friend Jaffer to help him. The duo took it upon themselves to nab the culprit. Speaking to TNM, Simeon says, “First we asked the Airtel showroom for the CCTV footage. We had a doubt on two people who were inside with us. They were acting suspicious in the footage. We memorized their faces. We asked the showroom what they had come for. We also took the number that they had given to them. But it was a SIM card registered in Bihar and it hadn’t been activated yet. So we put it out on social media like Facebook, Messenger, Truecaller.” The showroom handing out private information they had collected from other customers does raise questions. For Simeon’s luck however it turned out to be that of the thief. Simeon and Jaffer finally found the person via Facebook Messenger and got through to his Facebook profile. However, messages to the profile were not returned. This is when Simeon and Jaffer intensified their efforts to nab the man. “We saw his profile picture. It was similar to the CCTV footage. When he didn’t reply to our message, we saw the comments on his profile picture and messaged the guys who had commented saying ‘mast’ and all. We found his close friend who went to school with him in Bihar. We started messaging him but he didn’t give the number. So we asked our North Indian friend to talk in his slang and tell him that we had found him a job. He finally gave us the number. Our friend posed as a consultant who wanted to give him a job and asked him where he was.” Simeon and Jaffer set up a meeting on Wednesday night near a water tank in Madhavaram but the man never showed up. So the duo went early the next day to look for him in the area. Finally having found him, they confronted the man who immediately relented and gave them the phone. Speaking to TNM, Jaffer says, “We use social media a lot. So we thought somehow we can find him. His display picture wasn’t anywhere, not even om WhatsApp. But when we tracked him through Messenger, we caught him and handed over to the police. My friend was very upset. He already has three EMIs. He felt bad that for a lost phone, he will have to pay EMI. Our only fear was that the guy might flee to Bihar. That’s why we went early morning. We told his employer as well.” Also read: Acid leak in Sterlite grave, Thoothukudi in for catastrophe: Vedanta

The students created a barrier with their love and affection for Bhagawan as he walked out with his transfer order, one student even hugging him from the back, refusing to let him leave.
PTTV
A young man in a simple grey shirt and grey pants is surrounded by students – all of them crying, hanging on to him, holding him back. G Bhagawan, the beloved English teacher of the Government High School in Veliagaram, Thiruvallur, was given a transfer order, and the students of the school were heartbroken. They created a barrier with their love and affection for the 28-year-old – one student even hugging him from the back, refusing to let him leave. Touched, Bhagawan, too, was crying as much as his students. The pictures of this emotional moment were published in the media and by news channel Puthiya Thalaimurai, and the students’ gesture moved even the bureaucracy. G Bhagawan was transferred to the Government High School in Arungulam near Tiruttani – but this deployment has now been put on hold for ten days, after which it will be decided if he should stay in Veliagaram school or go to the new school. Speaking to TNM, Bhagawan said, “This is my first ever job in a school. I was appointed as a graduate teacher in Government High School, Veliagaram in 2014. Actually, if you look at the teacher-student ratio I was a surplus staff. So they decided to put me in another school that was short staffed and I got transferred to Tiruttani.” Bhagawan teaches English for students from class 6 to class 10. He had participated in the teachers’ transfer counselling that was held from June 12 to June 21, and chose Arungulam as his preferred location. But as soon as the students got wind of their teacher’s transfer, protests broke out in the school. Parents, too, supported the children who decided that they would not attend school on Tuesday to demonstrate that they were against the government’s decision of transferring Bhagawan. “They were hugging and crying and clutching my foot refusing to let me go. Watching them, I broke down. Then I took them to the hall and consoled them saying that I’ll be back in a few days,” Bhagawan said. Speaking to TNM, A Aravind, the headmaster of the Veliagaram School said that the students had fostered a parental bond with Bhagawan and hence expressed their emotions on hearing about his transfer. “The government conducts these counselling sessions to fulfil the stipulated teacher-student ratio across government schools in Tamil Nadu. Our school had 281 students last year. The junior most teachers are usually picked and transferred to other schools, based on the counselling. Bhagawan, and one other teacher from this school, have been transferred this year,” he said. Students have been reported as saying that though many teachers have left the school in the past, they have not felt this sad for any of them. Explaining how he tried to create a personal bond with the students, Bhagawan told TNM, “I have tried my best to interact with students beyond just academics. I used to narrate stories, understand their family background, talk to them about their future, and show them things via the projector. These projector sessions, in particular, were very enthralling for them. They felt like they were sitting in a cinema hall. It’s probably because of all these new things I tried to do that we developed a real bond. More than a teacher, I’m a friend, a brother to them.”

Jayalalithaa's legacy of autocracy, EPS seems determined to go beyond

In flying too close to the sun, Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami should remember that it could lead to his undoing.
She is present at every meeting, looking down upon her successor, although she chose not to handpick one. Her name is invoked by those who have assumed the mantle on any given occasion. Over the past 16 months, many a page from the late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa’s playbook has been taken by CM Edappadi Palaniswami. But the image that EPS is crafting for himself were the very traits that Jayalalithaa was flayed for. Cracking down on dissent   The late AIADMK leader was not one to take dissent lightly, wielding draconian laws to crackdown on those who protested against her regime. Activist SP Udayakumar, who led the anti-nuclear protests in Kudankulam and folk singer Kovan, who slammed the state-run liquor shops in his songs, were among those slapped with sedition charges during Jayalalithaa’s tenure.   Criminal defamation was another weapon in Jayalalithaa’s armoury, routinely used to clamp down on criticism and dissent.  As of August 2016, a month before she was hospitalised, Jayalalithaa’s government had filed 213 defamation complaints in 5 years against her detractors. She didn’t spare the media either, with 55 of these defamation cases on the fourth estate.  Like his predecessor, EPS has been quick to suppress protests by arresting activists and foisting cases on them. Take for instance, the agitations against the Salem airport expansion and the Chennai-Salem greenfield expressway. In less than a week, the ruling AIADMK has arrested actor Mansoor Ali Khan, activist Piyush Manush, student activist Valarmathi and many villagers who have been at the forefront of the opposition to the projects. But unlike Jayalalithaa, who was known to keep a firm grip on the law and order of the state, and seldom allowed things to descend into utter chaos, the present AIADMK administration has been slammed for its handling of the Thoothukudi protests, which culminated in the deaths of 13 demonstrators, who were fired upon by the police. EPS not only went on to justify the police firing as a “natural reaction” but has till date failed to visit the victims of the violence, creating the impression that he’s a remorseless and ruthless administrator.     The media has also been at the receiving end of this crackdown for raising questions. The Coimbatore police’s decision to book Tamil channel Puthiya Thalaimurai for statements made by its guests during a debate has been viewed as an attempt to muzzle and intimidate the press. EPS perhaps would do well to remember the Supreme Court’s words, while pulling up Jayalalithaa, “This is not how a healthy democracy functions. You must face criticism if you are a public figure.” Encouraging sycophancy Sycophancy knew no bounds when Jayalalithaa was alive. Massive hoardings, ministers and workers falling at her feet, branding welfare schemes under her moniker ‘Amma’ were among the ways Jayalalithaa cultivated a demi-god status. She encouraged obsequious behaviour of those around her, who went to any length to please her – including making bizarre claims such as Hilary Clinton being inspired by Jayalalithaa to contest the US Presidential Election. In an attempt to create a demi-god status that Jayalalithaa enjoyed, EPS has taken a page or two from her book. In fact in a government ad that was displayed in theatres, EPS went a step ahead of Jayalalithaa, projecting himself the saviour of the masses. Far from achieving the demi-god status, the CM became the butt of jokes, with the ad providing fodder for meme-makers. It was eventually pulled out of theatres, albeit after many a laugh at the CM’s expense. EPS, like Jayalalithaa, has encouraged the hoarding culture to continue. Giant cut-outs of the CM and other ministers often dot the streets of Tamil Nadu. The hoardings not only violate the Madras High Court’s directives but have resulted in fatalities – like in the case of Ragu, a software engineer from the US, who had rammed into an illegal arch erected for MGR Centenary celebrations. Shielding officials and subservience to Centre While Jayalalithaa received her fair share of criticism for failing to distance herself from aide VK Sasikala despite charges of corruption, the late CM sidelined or dropped ministers facing allegations of graft. Many a time she dropped them without warning and simply because they had fallen out of favour. In 2015, then state Agriculture Minister SS Krishnamoorthy was sacked amidst allegations of corruption and abetment of suicide. The same year, then Transport Minister Senthil Balaji, considered a Jayalalithaa loyalist, was dropped from her cabinet and stripped of his party post following several complaints against him. Unlike ‘Amma’, EPS has faced criticism for shielding his ministers and officials. Despite the names of Health Minster C Vijayabaskar and Tamil Nadu DGP TK Rajendran figuring in the Gutkha scam, which is being probed by the CBI, Edappadi Palaniswami has chosen to turn a blind eye to the charges levelled at them.   But perhaps the starkest difference between Jayalalithaa and her successor is in the influence of the Centre on Tamil Nadu’s affairs. Jayalalithaa’s strong and self-assured resistance to the Centre’s policies including NEET, GST among others have been replaced by a quiet subservience. As pointed out by TNM in this article, the EPS-led government has easily conceded on issues that Jayalalithaa was opposed to. EPS can claim to run the state in her name, calling his administration ‘Amma’s government’. He can even display streaks of authoritarianism, that Jayalalithaa was infamous for, but in flying too close to the sun, the Chief Minister should remember that it could lead to his undoing.

AIADMK mouthpiece slams Kamal and Rajini, asks ‘Amma’ to put an end to ‘clowns’

Dr Namadhu Amma published a poem that implores former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to come back.
Dr Namadhu Amma, the mouthpiece of AIADMK, has slammed Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth on their political entry. The poem begs Amma (former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa) to visit St George Fort and put a stop to the ‘clowns.’ The poem calls Kamal Haasan a ‘coward’ and points out that he had threatened to leave the country when Amma (former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa) was alive. It ridicules Rajinikanth about mustering the energy to launch a political party after Amma’s demise. The poem goes on to drag in movie directors Ameer, Bala, Gowthaman and Karu Pazhaniappan. It says that these directors who do not have films to work on have set out masquerading as ‘Tamil poralis’. It also says that Amma’s demise has emboldened old-time film directors like Bharathiraja and Parthipan to call for a press conference once every ten days. The poem further says that people like actor Mansoor Ali Khan, BJP leader S Ve Shekher and director SA Chandrasekar have come out talking about various things. It also takes a dig at the social activists that are advocating against Sterlite and the proposed 8-lane Green Corridor from Chennai to Salem. Ameer and Bala had started being vocal about issues that Tamil Nadu faces since the Jallikattu protest in January 2017. They along with Karu Pazhaniappan were supporting the anti-Sterlite protests in Thoothukudi. Director Bharathiraja had called for a press conference after the Puthiya Thalaimurai incident in Coimbatore and had slammed the government for being undemocratic. S Ve Shekher recently came under fire for posting derogatory comments about women journalists and was initially denied bail by the Madras High Court. He was then granted bail on Wednesday by the Chennai Metropolitan Magistrate Court. Mansoor Ali Khan, social activists Piyush Manush and S Valarmathi were arrested recently by the police for speaking against the proposed Chennai-Salem expressway. The fishermen had reportedly demanded their dues be paid when their employer confiscated their passports.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami on Thursday requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to direct the Indian Embassy in Iran to take steps to repatriate 21 Indian fishermen stranded there. Earlier this week, reports emerged of fishermen from Tamil Nadu’s southern districts stranded in Iran. The fishermen who were hired by Iran-based employers had demanded their dues be paid. In a letter to PM Modi, which was released to the media, Palaniswami said the 21 were left stranded in Iran by their employers by withholding their passports. "I request you to direct the Embassy of India in Iran to take all measures to ensure the immediate repatriation of these poor innocent Indian fishermen. Necessary steps may also be taken to ensure that the fishermen receive their just and due wages," he said. Palaniswami said the fishermen from Tamil Nadu were employed by man named Mohammed Shallah and his brothers for more than six months."In the recent past, the Iranian employers did not pay the fishermen their share, as per terms of employment. Hence these fishermen were struggling to make their ends meet and were unable to send money to their families," Palaniswami said. Having lost the hope of receiving a fair remuneration, the fishermen requested the employers to facilitate their return to India which was summarily refused by them, Palaniswami said."It is reported that the passports of the fishermen are in the custody of the local employers who is neither allowing them to continue work nor allowing them to return back to India. In addition, the employer chased the fishermen out of their accommodation and abandoned them in the streets without any shelter, food and security," Palaniswami said.  IANS inputs

Controversy
Earlier, a Tamil serial actor was also arrested for her views on the gunning down of 13 civilians.
Two days after the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court denied advance bail to two lawyers, one of them has been arrested on charges of 'engineering’ the protests in Thoothukudi on May 22. A lawyer named Vanchinathan was arrested at the Chennai airport at 11 pm on Wednesday. Both Hari Raghavan and Vanchinathan have been charged under the Indian Penal Code Section 353 (criminal force to deter public servants from discharging duty), Section 148 (rioting with deadly weapons) and Section 3 of the Tamil Nadu Property (Prevention of Damage and Loss) Act. The duo reportedly belong to the Makkal Adhigaram group which has been accused of harbouring anti-social elements that turned a peaceful protest, violent. According to a report in the Hindustan Times that quotes the Thoothukudi Superintendent of Police Murali Rambha, he said, “Prima facie our investigation reveals Vanchinathan’s association with protests. After being produced before a magistrate, the accused is now lodged in Palayamkottai jail. We are looking out for the other lawyer.” While the lawyers’ argument has been that they had merely sought to provide legal assistance to those affected by the pollution caused by the Sterlite plant, Justice GR Swaminathan denied them bail on Monday. The court observed, “The petitioners do not dispute the fact that they were the leaders. As many as 13 persons have died in the protests. The petitioners should not stand shy of police interrogation.” Six other members of the group had been arrested earlier and charged under the National Security Act. Earlier, a Tamil serial actor was arrested for her comments on the Thoothukudi incident. Soon after the gunning down of 13 civilians, Nilani posted a video of herself in police attire and was critical of the Tamil Nadu government. The actress was reportedly in costume for a role she plays. According to a report in The Hindu, the actor was arrested in Coonoor by the Vadapalani police. She has been charged under Indian Penal Code Sections 419 (Punishment for cheating by personation), 153 (Wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot) and 500 (Punishment for defamation) of the Indian Penal Code and 66 D (Punishment for cheating by personation by using computer resource) of the Information Technology Act.

Controversy
The former Health Minister's party, the PMK, has previously gone after Rajinikanth for glorifying smoking in his films.
The first look of Vijay's upcoming film with AR Murugadoss was released on Thursday. Titled Sarkar, the first poster which was launched shows a stylish Vijay with a cigarette in his mouth. While the poster sent fans into a paroxysm of delight, it drew flak from Dr Anbumani Ramadoss, MP and former Union Health Minister. Anbumani Ramadoss took to Twitter to slam Vijay for allegedly promoting smoking through the poster. Stating that he would have looked more stylish without the cigarette, the former Health Minister tweeted "Shame on Actor Vijay for promoting Smoking in the first look of his next movie". He added the hashtags #ActResponsibly and #DoNotPromoteSmoking as well. You’ll look more stylish without that cigarette.#SmokingKills #SmokingCausesCancer pic.twitter.com/UUvzgrffHN — Dr ANBUMANI RAMADOSS (@draramadoss) June 21, 2018 Anbumani Ramadoss also tweeted an old newspaper clipping which has Vijay stating that he will not smoke in his films, on the request of the former who was then the Health Minister. Shame on Actor Vijay for promoting Smoking in this first look of his next movie.#ActResponsibly #DoNotPromoteSmoking — Dr ANBUMANI RAMADOSS (@draramadoss) June 21, 2018 pic.twitter.com/KvVcA07W6b — Dr ANBUMANI RAMADOSS (@draramadoss) June 21, 2018 Vijay isn't the only actor to have faced criticism for glorifying smoking in his films. In 2002, the PMK's founder, S Ramadoss, Anbumani's father, had criticised industry bigwig Rajinikanth for making the cigarette a style statement. Ahead of the release of Baba, S Ramadoss had accused Rajinikanth of "misguiding" the youth at a party meeting in Poompuhar. His words had incensed Rajini fans and the actor had even said that he may take legal action against S Ramadoss for his comments. PMK workers caused disruptions in theatres where Baba was being screened and violence erupted in parts of Tamil Nadu between them and Rajini fans. Questions were raised on whether the PMK was truly concerned about public health or if the campaign was to tarnish Rajini's image, considering the actor may step into politics. However, since then, the PMK has gone after other actors who've smoked on screen, including Rajinikanth's son-in-law, Dhanush. Rajini later took a decision not to smoke on screen. He further made an appeal to his fans to not take up the habit, citing his poor health which he attributed to smoking. In 2007, Anbumani Ramadoss urged Vijay to stop smoking on screen. The former Health Minister is credited with the ban on smoking in public spaces, the prominent warnings on cigarette packets and the smoking disclaimers/warnings that are issued in films. He also banned the consumption of gutka. The former minister's comments have enraged some fans. Some have asked why Anbumani Ramadoss did not make objections when Vijay smoked in other films, including his last release Mersal and Thuppaki which had the actor smoking in one of the posters. They have accused Anbumani Ramadoss of raising objections only because Sarkar is being produced by Sun Pictures which is owned by Kalanidhi Maran.
