Alagiri’s comments at Marina show he’s ready to stir trouble, but Stalin camp unfazed

A source in Stalin camp says the possibility of Alagiri's re-induction into the party seems unlikely.
PTI
On Tuesday, DMK Working President MK Stalin and his brother MK Alagiri, stood shoulder to shoulder as their father's coffin was lowered into the ground near the Anna memorial in Marina beach. Less than a week later, the elder brother stood at the very same spot on Monday to signal an incoming rebellion in the party."They will not put what I say on Kalaignar TV or Sun TV," MK Alagiri began sarcastically, after paying respects to his late father. "I was expressing my anguish to my father. All the men loyal to Kalaignar are on my side," he proclaimed. And did this mean he was challenging the existing DMK leadership?"Time will answer those questions,” he replied ominously, leaving the memorial even as more questions were posed at him. Over the last few days, the chorus amongst supporters of MK Alagiri has been steadily growing for his re-induction into the party. Several videos and posters have also been doing the rounds on social media hailing Alagiri as the party strongman. His son Dayanidhi Alagiri has further been titled a future leader. Alagiri was expelled from the DMK in 2014 by the general secretary K Anbazhagan. He was the party's south zone organisational secretary when he was removed for persistent slanderous attacks on party seniors and anti-party activities. He had taken his sibling rivalry with MK Stalin too far."This is a sign that MK Alagiri wants to get back into the party. The anguish that he was expressing to his father is over his continued expulsion from the DMK," explains PM Mannan, an Alagiri loyalist who was expelled in 2014 as well. "He does not want to take over the party. Stalin can be President. But Alagiri must be given back control of south Tamil Nadu. His political acumen and electoral expertise are important for DMK to win future polls," he adds. Though his supporters say this, Alagiri himself is only willing to say that he is no longer with the party. Sources in the DMK, however, claim that Stalin and the leaders who support him are not concerned about this development. Any attempt at a rebellion from Alagiri is a 'non-starter,' the source further adds. Another source in the family meanwhile said that this does not pose a challenge to Stalin's leadership. He further adds that the possibility of Alagiri's re-induction into the party seems unlikely. But despite this nonchalance, the DMK has, contrary to its usual ethos, told its spokespersons not to speak about the issue."Alagiri is not an external threat. He is a threat from within the family itself and they are wary of different voices emerging from the same family," a source close to Stalin said. "We were expecting him to create problems but not this soon after the funeral. Since he is family they may go soft on him," he adds. There was a buzz in the DMK a few days ago that Stalin was not averse to the idea of taking Alagiri back to counter TTV Dhinakaran in south Tamil Nadu. But another source working closely with Stalin denied this completely. “We don’t believe support for TTV has grown in the last few months and so we don’t need to actively counter him. Bringing Alagiri back to counter TTV or anyone else is not worth it, since he will create more trouble within the party and all the leaders know it,” said the source.

‘My petition over memorials at Marina forcibly dismissed’: Traffic Ramaswamy to HC

The social activist also requested that the bench sharing his petition be changed.
On Wednesday, the Madras High Court, in a special hearing following the demise of former DMK chief M Karunanidhi, had dismissed several petitions that sought a ban on constructing memorials at Marina beach. However, activist Traffic Ramaswamy on Monday, whose petition was also dismissed, told Madras High Court Chief Justice Vijaya Kamlesh Tahilramani that his lawyer accepted the dismissal of the petition without taking his permission and that it was forcibly dismissed. He also requested that the bench sharing his petition be changed. To this, Chief Justice Tahilramani advised him to file a petition with the Registrar. Traffic Ramaswamy had filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against the construction of Jaya memorial on Marina beach on the grounds that it was in violation of CRZ Regulations. He also demanded that the mausoleums of MGR and Annadurai be relocated. He had also stated that a memorial for J Jayalalithaa should not be built since she was convicted in the disproportionate assets case.   However, prior to the hearing, to ensure that a burial at Marina Beach could take place, the existing petitions were dismissed by the bench comprising Justices Huluvadi G Ramesh and SS Sundar. On the night of August 7, when the hearing took place, Traffic Ramaswamy’s lawyer said that they would not be withdrawing the petition, and asked for more time from the court. But since it was a pressing matter, they had filed a memo, saying that they do not have an objection to Karunanidhi being buried on Marina Beach. This petition was also dismissed by the bench comprising Acting Chief Justice HG Ramesh and Justice Sundar. N Rajaraman, who claimed to represent the activist, also made a representation before a bench of the Supreme Court led by Justice Gogoi and stated that a memorial cannot be built as it violates CRZ rules and that it should be stopped. This oral mention, however, was not taken. Read: Alagiri’s comments at Marina show he’s ready to stir trouble, but Stalin camp unfazed

Terrorist groups creating distrust in the minds of gullible TN people, says PM Modi

In an e-mail interview given to the Tamil newspaper Dina Thanthi, Narendra Modi spoke about various issues.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that there is evidence of ‘terrorism groups’ that are creating lack of trust in the minds of gullible people, thus endorsing the view of Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan. In an e-mail interview given to the Tamil newspaper Dina Thanthi, Narendra Modi spoke about various issues ranging from BJP’s scope in Tamil Nadu to Rajinikanth to corruption. He also maintained that the BJP had chances of winning Tamil Nadu if the party worked well in the state. Chances of BJP in Tamil Nadu “In the previous Lok Sabha polls, BJP won one parliamentary seat in Tamil Nadu without teaming up with DMK or AIADMK. This is not an ordinary victory. There are areas which have supported the BJP for generations,” he said. He also said that the people in Tamil Nadu had very less choices during elections and that the youth in the state are looking for alternatives. He also expressed his confidence of securing a good victory if the party works hard in the state. On Rajinikanth and his politics Rumours have been rife in the media about Rajinikanth mulling the option of joining the BJP. Narendra Modi said that he respects Rajinikanth for his achievements and that he cannot comment on hypothetical situations. On Pon Radhakrishnan’s comment about terrorist activities in TN Recently the Union Minister of State for Shipping Pon Radhakrishnan said that there is terrorist influence in Tamil Nadu and had added that the central government would help the state government to act against such elements. Narendra Modi in his interview said that terrorism is hampering the development and welfare of people around the world and that even in our country there are people causing problems with the schemes introduced for the welfare and progress of the states. “There is evidence that there is involvement of terrorist groups in these actions. Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said this in relation to protests against the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant. People associated with these terrorist groups are sowing seeds of distrust in the minds of gullible people. We have evidence for that. Hence we should together strive to prevent such wrong information from spreading,” he said.   Corruption Amit Shah, in his recent visit to Chennai, had spoken in a public meeting that the corruption levels in Tamil Nadu is very high and that BJP, if elected to power would eradicate it. Validating Amit Shah’s views on state-level corruption, Narendra Modi said that evaluating the state government’s performance was the right of the people living in those states. Emphasising that the BJP government is strong on fighting corruption, he said that the Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Act was passed by the BJP government despite being introduced in 1988. “Demonetisation has hit the big fishes of corruption badly. People who had exchanged money after demonetisation are now paying higher taxes. Our direct tax collections have increased since then,” he said. He also stated that BJP’s war against corruption for the welfare of the people of India will continue.

PVR is taking over Sathyam, but the popcorn, cream donut and cold coffee will stay put

Since the acquisition was announced, netizens have been upset about the loss of Chennai’s beloved SPI Cinemas.
On Sunday evening, the city of Chennai expressed collective heartbreak as news broke that multiplex chain PVR cinemas will be acquiring iconic Chennai brand – SPI Cinemas Pvt Ltd, originally called Sathyam Cinemas.  PVR in this deal worth close to Rs.850 crore, will be acquiring 71.7% stake in SPI Cinema. But even this whopping amount is shadowed by Chennai's love for Sathyam. Some movie goers are already hatching plans to buy back the shares from PVR. So I did the math. If every Chennainte pays Rs.1214, we can buy back #SathyamCinemas. And if you can't understand why we feel this way about this place, just read an old article of mine about the extent they went to get us 'the best popcorn in the world'. https://t.co/S8sTFi7GEI— Vishal Menon (@Vishal1Menon) August 13, 2018 | Guys can we all pool in and collect 850 crores and 1 rupee? Just checking. Need to save something that's going to die.— Prasanth Selvarasu (@sp_ielberg) August 12, 2018 Netizens rushed to social media to vent their feelings at the thought of their favourite theatre in the city losing its flavour. And by that they mean Sathyam's legendary butter popcorn and the accompanying flavours. Those who are not from Chennai or haven't visited this theatre in Royapettah are probably wondering what all the fuss is about. I mean, it is just popcorn right? Raise your hand if you honestly don't understand the deal with 'Sathyam Popcorn'. — feeling searching for enlightenment — pavith (@pavithrockz) August 13, 2018 From my TL, I see that the butter popcorn (??) @ Sathyam is treated like prasadam. Am I right? Or is it something else? :-) — Hemanth Kumar C R (@crhemanth) August 12, 2018 But Sathyam Cinema loyalists don’t lose heart just yet. On Monday SPI Cinemas said, "From your love for our popcorn and cold coffee, to your outrage when things didn't go our way, SPI cinemas could have never been what is it today without you. While it's only natural for you to wonder what this means for brand SPI, we want to let you know that this decision is not solely a business decision but one that is based on the larger picture. The SPI culture will continue to be what it has always been - passionate, pioneering and inclusive. The core SPI team led by Swaroop and I, will continue to nurture and shape your experiences by preserving everything you love about us - from the people to the food to our commitment to excellence, all of it will remain intact." That includes the popcorn, the cream donuts, the giant puff, the works. With both SPI’s owners Kiran Reddy and Swaroop Reddy continuing as CEO and President respectively,  patrons are assured the full “Sathyam experience” for now.   SPI Cinemas' statement comes after massive outpouring of disappointment by people. And all of them agreed that popcorn is a word. But Sathyam popcorn is an emotion.  Sathyam Popcorn lovers, after knowing #PVR to take over #SPICinemas pic.twitter.com/h2W3XJuwV1 — Chennai Memes (@MemesChennai) August 12, 2018 There was a time I went movies only for this popcorn! cause HAPPINESS comes in SATHYAM POPCORN#popcornFTW #sathyam #SPIcineams #chennaipride #chennaiicon @SPICinemas pic.twitter.com/PqrHcnO5CB — Ramya Chockalingam (@ramichocks) August 12, 2018 Dear PVR, you will run out of business if you change the Popcorn at Sathyam. Theatre loyalists further talk about great picture quality and the four way speakers that give high precision in all frequency ranges. What more, the theatre charges nominally for parking and movies always begin on time. With PVR taking over, movie goers expressed concern about show timings and prices.  Sathyam cinemas Iconic and cult for a boy like me who grown up in Royapettah, Chennai. Meet Amrita, the Chennai photographer who is raising awareness on breastmilk donation

Amrita began her project in February and launched six images during ‘World Breastfeeding Week’ that is observed in the first week of August.
Breastfeeding in public or in private has always been a subject of severe scrutiny. Mothers are also often judged harshly when it comes to breastfeeding. ‘Is the mother breastfeeding enough?’, ‘How can she breastfeed in public?’, ‘Why is she not breastfeeding her baby?’, ‘Isn’t her baby too old to be breastfed?’ A few months ago, the photo of an actor breastfeeding a baby on the cover of a Malayalam magazine caused great furore and even protests. While the topic of breastfeeding itself is mired in controversy, a photographer based out of Chennai is working on a personal project with the hope of raising awareness about donating breastmilk for NICU babies. Amrita Samant has been working as a maternity, newborn, baby and toddler photographer in Chennai, Bengaluru and Singapore for the past four years. She says that her introduction to the idea of breastmilk donation happened quite recently through her friend Chintya Anish Iyer. Chintya, who had a baby in July last year, chanced upon the idea of donating excess breastmilk through a friend. “My friends in the UK were doing it, it is pretty common in foreign countries. But I was really surprised to learn that Chennai had 7 breastmilk banks,” says Chintya, who runs a store called Intish by Chintya in Chennai. Chintya also joined a Facebook group for young mothers to discuss breastfeeding. It was through one of its members that she came to know about these banks in Chennai and she then got in touch with Dr Shobana from Child Trust Hospital in Egmore to donate her breastmilk. Although Chintya had some reservations initially, she soon opened up online about donating excess breastmilk. “I posted about breastmilk donation online only when my child began weening. I had been doing it for quite a few months before I finally opened up,” she shares. But there were a lot of naysayers. “As a young mother, I was told by relatives not to speak so openly about breastmilk. They all had their own apprehensions about speaking openly about such things. ‘What if your baby didn’t get enough milk?’ they’d say. These ideas came from a very conservative, conditioned way of thinking,” she says. Chintya also adds that donating breastmilk itself is a very tedious process that involves a lot of commitment. “As a young mother the pumping will tire you out, it is quite draining physically. You have to be committed to continue doing it,” says Chintya. Chintya, however, was encouraged by the response she was getting from other mothers. “I was giving away my excess milk to mothers I personally knew and many of them were telling me how it literally saved their child’s life. At some point, you prioritise donating,” she says. Her focus, however, is to spread awareness that such a thing is possible. “The point to drive home is to ensure people know of its existence,” she adds. The project Amrita’s project is structured around this very idea of raising awareness. Starting in February this year, Amrita captured six striking images and launched them during ‘World Breastfeeding Week’ that is observed in the first week of August. Amrita also collected information from Hyderabad-based lactation consultant, Kamana, to help her with her project. “You may know that 1 ounce = 6 teaspoons, but do you know that 1 ounce of breastmilk can feed a premature baby for a full day? Studies have also shown that 80% of the problems in NICU can be prevented by feeding those babies breastmilk than formula milk,” explains Amrita. Her project took quite some time to materialise since it involved talking to young mothers, their partners and family to make sure everyone was comfortable with the concept. “I know a lot of dialogue is based around breastfeeding in public. I want to be able to raise awareness on breastmilk donation through my project,” she shares. Janani Lakshminarayanan, a mother of two who was one of the mothers who posed for Amrita’s project, shares that she has never hesitated to breastfeed her child in public or donate excess breastmilk. “I have faced the problem myself. It is equal to denying someone their food. Why is it considered a taboo?” she asks. While excess lactation is not something every mother is capable of doing, those who can most often shy away from talking openly to others. Amrita’s project hopes to wipe away those inhibitions. How does breastmilk donation work? Donating breastmilk is a simple enough procedure and is most helpful for premature babies who weigh below one kilogram. Donated breastmilk can also be used for older babies who have need for it. “Mothers can store their breastmilk in the deep freezer. This milk can be stored in stainless steel containers for up to three months,” explains Dr Vanathi. The collected milk is pasteurised and goes through screening for infections. Mothers too are requested to submit routine infection screening test reports to make sure the milk is safe for NICU babies. Those who want to learn more can get in touch with Dr Shobana or Dr Vanathi at Child Trust Hospital on 9962252104.

Will meet my supporters in Madurai to discuss next move: MK Alagiri tells TNM

He further dismisses allegations and reports that he is considering joining actor turned politician Rajinikanth.
Hours after his ominous statement at the Marina beach which signalled an incoming rebellion, MK Alagiri tells TNM that his next step is to gather his supporters from across Tamil Nadu and hold a meeting in his bastion, Madurai. The expelled DMK leader and son of the late party Chief MK Karunanidhi, says this would be to discuss the DMK's failure in elections over the last three years and what his future action will be. Less that a week after the death of DMK Chief M Karunanidhi, his eldest son stood at his memorial and proclaimed that he had conveyed his anguish to his late father. By pointing out that television channels associated to the DMK will not carry his words, he made it clear that rift within the family remained unchanged. Alagiri was expelled from the DMK in 2014 by the general secretary K Anbazhagan. He was the party's south zone organisational secretary when he was removed for persistent slanderous attacks on party seniors and anti-party activities. He had taken his sibling rivalry with MK Stalin too far. And now, back in focus following his father's death, Alagiri points out that the DMK has been failing in one election after another."The DMK is not functioning properly. They won just one seat in the northern part of the state in the last assembly elections. And even in Chennai they are in a position where they lose their deposit," he points out, referring to the RK Nagar elections where AMMK chief TTV Dhinakaran saw a resounding victory. "So you can imagine the state of the party right now," he adds. And does he his re-induction as a solution to this?"I have to gather my supporters from across the state in Madurai and take a decision on what will happen next," he explains. Alagiri further points out that he has never demanded to be a leader."I have never had the wish to become a leader. Even when Kalaignar was there - he gave me an MP post and I said I don't want it, then he gave me the Minister's post and I said I dont want it. I told them to give it to Kanimozhi," he says. "The post of organisational secretary was forced upon me. Perasiriyar (K Anbazhagan) and Kalaignar gave it to me. They told me I have to accept it. They gave it to me after I won the Tirumangalam election. I never asked anyone for it," he adds. He points out that he has great support amongst DMK cadre across the state."Not only the south belt but cadre from all over Tamil Nadu support me," he points out. He further dismisses allegations and reports that he is considering joining actor turned politician Rajinikanth. The reports followed the actor's visit to meet Karunanidhi in the hospital. Pictures which emerged showed Alagiri and Rajini in a lighter mood.

Actor-turned-politician Rajinikanth on Monday slammed the Tamil Nadu government run by the AIADMK – and took on Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami over multiple issues around late former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi’s public homage, and burial. In a speech at a homage meeting for Karunanidhi organised by FEFSI, Rajinikanth said, “Whole India, completely, came there for Kalaignar. The soldiers from the three forces paid respects to him, they gave him the 21 gun salute. But I do have an issue – I don’t know if I should raise it over here, but I will say it. From the Governor, to the Chief Ministers of all states, from the Prime Minister, to Congress President Rahul Gandhi… when they all stayed for at least two to three hours, shouldn’t Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister have come there? Shouldn’t he have stayed there? Shouldn’t the Cabinet have stayed there?” Taking a dig at the stature of the current crop of leaders, Rajinikanth said, “What will other people think when they see this? Are you MGR? Are you Jayalalithaa? This enmity etc is over… They were Jaambavans who chose to clash with each other back then. Now there’s no need for it, right. You’re not enemies, you’re rival parties, that’s all.” Further slamming the EPS government for initially refusing a resting place to Karunanidhi at the Marina, he said, “You gave a resting place to him there (at Marina) – and did not go for an appeal (of the Madras High Court order.) If you had chosen to appeal, I would have come down to protest.” Rajinikanth praised Karunanidhi in his speech, and called Stalin – Karunanidhi’s son and DMK’s Working President – ‘Thalapathy’ on multiple occasions. “I cannot image a Tamil Nadu without Kalaignar. With Kalaignar, Tamil Nadu has lost a big icon. Tomorrow, if there is a big event in Tamil Nadu, a big function, I don’t know who Thalapathy (Stalin) is going to invite…” Rajini said. He also said that Kalaignar had safeguarded the DMK for 50 years and had overcome several challenges, plots, and betrayals. He further said, “Don’t feel bad for my saying this, but the AIADMK should keep Kalaignar’s photo next to MGR’s for their annual functions. Because the AIADMK was created because of Dr Kalaignar.” “I couldn’t handle it when Thalapathy broke down like a child. (Addressing Stalin) Thalapathy, your udanpirapugal (family) is there with you. Don’t worry,” he said.

CBI to probe police firing during Thoothukudi Sterlite protests, orders Madras HC

The court also ordered that the cases filed on six persons from Makkal Adhikaram under the National Security Act be quashed.
The Madurai bench of Madras High Court, on Tuesday, ordered a CBI probe into the police firing in Thoothukudi on May 22.  A bench consisting of Justices Basheer Ahamed and CT Selvam passed the order after hearing about 15 Public Interest Litigations (PIL) requesting a CBI probe into the events of the 100th day of the anti-Sterlite protest.  The court also ordered that the cases filed on six persons from Makkal Adhikaram under the National Security Act be quashed.  A total of 173 FIRs were registered on the protestors based on everything that happened on May 22, and several more were arrested and locked up in jail.  The court, on August 2, hence ordered the Tamil Nadu police to investigate and club all the FIRs filed against the protestors during the anti-Sterlite protest into a single FIR. The court directed that all the FIRs be converted into statements made by witnesses under section 161 (3) of the IPC. This case has now been transferred to the CBI.  On May 22, violence broke out on the 100th day of the anti-Sterlite agitations after police opened fire on residents who were marching towards the District Collector’s office. Thirteen civilians were shot dead by the police and over 200 others were maimed for life.  Following this, on May 28, the Tamil Nadu Government directed the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) to shut down the Sterlite Copper Smelter plant in Thoothukudi.  “Under sections, 18(1)(b) of the Water Act, 1974 in the larger public interest, the Government endorse the closure direction of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board and also direct the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board to seal the unit and close the plant permanently,” read the order.   In June, the then Chief Justice of Madras HC, Indira Banerjee, had said that the cases related to the anti-Sterlite protest in Thoothukudi must be probed by the CBI. She had remarked that it was only fair that the investigation be done by the central agency since the police is involved in the case.

At a condolence meet organised by FEFSI, Rajinikanth questioned the government over how it handled Kalaignar Karunanidhi’s death.
Tamil Nadu Minister for Fisheries D Jayakumar, on Tuesday, slammed Rajinikanth for his remarks against the government, where he slammed the ruling dispensation at a public meeting. Speaking to reporters, Jayakumar accused Rajinikanth of not knowing the political history of AIADMK and Tamil Nadu, and hence, should not have expressed his comments. “MG Ramachandran (MGR) created AIADMK after opposing M Karunanidhi. Following MGR’s footsteps, our Amma (former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa) also governed the state and is also revered and held in their hearts by the people. Rajinikanth has hidden all this history behind the politics in TN today. There is no way that he knows how MGR developed politics through his movies. In each of MGR’s movies a man and a woman will be there in the frame holding flags. He conveyed social message to people through his songs,” he said. He also said that Rajinikanth could not say any of his opinions when MGR and Jayalalithaa were alive and called his giving a speech yesterday a cowardly act. Calling Rajinikanth an opportunist, Jayakumar said, “To talk politics in a condolence meet is not healthy. I would say that Rajinikanth is an inexperienced politician to have done this. He should be aware of the history of politics. I feel that Rajinikanth is using this situation to catapult himself as a full-fledged politician after being a part-time politician all this while. He is using the death of Kalaignar to pull the DMK cadres to his side. I think he shouldn’t have spoken bad about MGR and Amma in the dias yesterday.” Emphasising that Rajinikanth’s opportunism will not work in Tamil Nadu, D Jayakumar said that Rajinikanth must not speak about things that he barely knows about, for the sake of it. Addressing the allegations that the TN government did not respect Karunanidhi during his last rites, Jayakumar said that they visited Karunanidhi’s Gopalapuram residence immediately after he passed away and also paid their respects to him at Rajaji Hall. “Our government paid all the respects from the date Karunanidhi was hospitalised to the day he was buried. We couldn’t allot land in Marina due to legal complications, but still we were ready to give two acres of land in Gandhi Mandapam. Then after the High Court order, we accepted it and gave the land and also all other help to the family,” he said. The rebuttal came after Rajinikanth, in a speech at a homage meeting for Karunanidhi organised by FEFSI on Monday, said that irrespective of the entire country coming together in Marina to pay their respects to the leader during his last rites and raised questions as to why the TN Chief Minister was absent in the ceremony. He also said that since the era of MGR and Jayalalithaa is over, there is no need for enmity between individuals now. He added that if the TN government had chosen to appeal against the Madras HC order allotting land for Karunanidhi in Marina, he would have protested against it.

AIADMK rejoices in Alagiri’s revolt, mouthpiece gives ‘split’ verdict for DMK

Their main story is headlined, ‘DMK is breaking into two’ – and the paper has declared that Alagiri’s comments have left DMK leaders ‘jittery’.
MK Alagiri hit the headlines on Monday, when he paid respects to his father and late former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi at the Marina beach, where the leader is buried. His comments – not entirely surprising – got everyone’s attention nonetheless. But while Alagiri did not ‘proclaim’ anything as such, his sarcastic comments have come as music to the ears of DMK’s rival and Tamil Nadu’s ruling party, the AIADMK. On Tuesday, the AIADMK mouthpiece Namadhu Amma came out with a ‘split’ verdict – literally. Their main story is headlined, ‘DMK is breaking into two’ – and, though sources in the Stalin camp have been telling the media that Alagiri’s possible revolt is not of much concern to them, the paper has declared that his comments have left DMK leaders ‘jittery’. namadhuamma.net Alagiri had told reporters on Monday, "They will not put what I say on Kalaignar TV or Sun TV. I was expressing my anguish to my father. All the men loyal to Kalaignar are on my side." After this declaration, he went on to say that ‘only time will tell’ whether this meant he was challenging the existing DMK leadership. Namadhu Amma meanwhile said that this announcement from Alagiri, a day before DMK’s Executive committee meeting, has made the senior party leaders jittery. The paper went into Alagiri’s troubled history with the DMK, and said, “Although Karunanidhi tried to foster peace between the two brothers, he could not do it. Stalin also worked hard with the intention of removing Alagiri and finally Alagiri was expelled from the party. Since then, he has not been accepted into the DMK.” K Isakkimuthu, one of Alagiri’s loyalists told Namadhu Amma that only if Alagiri and his son Dayanidhi Alagiri are given plum party posts will the DMK be able to function properly. According to the paper, Alagiri’s supporters have also demanded that he be made the General Secretary or the President of the DMK and an important post be given to Dayanidhi Alagiri. For the first time since Karunanidhi's death, MK Stalin explained in detail what transpired in a span of few hours between the DMK and TN government.
It was an emotional MK Stalin who took to the stage at the Anna Arivalayam or DMK headquarters in Chennai on Wednesday to address the DMK Executive Committee, leaders and cadre gathered to condole the death of party president M Karunanidhi. And for the first time after his father's death, the party's Working President presented his version of the DMK's struggle to ensure that Karunanidhi was buried at the Marina beach next to his mentor CN Annadurai. The ruling AIADMK government had refused to allot space for the burial of former Chief Minister's mortal remains near the Anna memorial, citing legal reasons. The DMK was forced to go to the Madras High Court late in the night, to ensure that the party patriarch's wish to be buried near his mentor was fulfilled."There was a time when DMK was fighting in court to retain the party's symbol, flag and even its name. At that time Kalaignar said that if we lost the case, he would die, his body would be buried near Anna and that we would all have to come garland his grave," recalled Stalin. "Similarly, if I couldn't win this case to bury Kalaignar at Marina, my body would have been found in the burial spot near his," he added emotionally."Kalaignar was battling for his life and doctors told us there was not much time left. They said they had done everything they could," explained Stalin. "We were shattered but we were discussing how to ensure that the burial was done in Marina. Through our leader Anbazhagan, we sent word to the government but we heard from there that our request will not be considered," he added. Following this senior leaders in the party suggested that they meet the Chief Minister in person. They were apparently confident that their demands would be met if they met the CM in person."I got ready to leave but senior leaders told me that I shouldn't go. They said you are the Working President and the son of Kalaignar. You should not go to make this request to them," Stalin said. "But I said I don't care about my prestige, image or respect. I can lose anything for my leader," he continued. But when senior leaders along with Stalin visited the Chief Minister, he stated that the land near the Anna memorial could not be allotted and that legal opinion sought by the Government confirmed the same. But the DMK remained unconvinced and continued to request them for the space."I feel no shame in admitting that we held onto the CM's hand and pleaded with him to give us the burial space in Marina.  All this because it was my leader's last wish. Even then they gave no affirmation," alleged Stalin. "Finally, to make us leave, he told us, 'We'll see'," Stalin recalled. Shortly after that, Karunanidhi passed away and it became imperative to get permission for the burial. The DMK sent a letter to the government with a formal request but they were denied the site again. It was through news channels that the DMK came to know that the Chief Secretary had allotted an alternative piece of land for the burial."That is when our lawyer Wilson came and asked if he should go to the High Court," said Stalin. "I asked if it was possible and he said a team of lawyers will immediately take the matter to court. We were told the matter will be taken up at 10.30 pm and then we were told to expect the verdict at 8.30 am the next day," he added. In this time, petitioners who had filed cases against memorials being set up at the Marina either withdrew their cases or claimed they had no objection to a memorial for Karunanidhi at the spot."At 10.30 am we come to know that Kalaignar will be buried near the Anna memorial. We were crying near the body kept at Rajaji hall and didn't know the news initially. But lakhs of supporters in the crowd saw the news on their phones and they begin crying. We saw this first and then got the news," said Stalin. "In all that sadness, we found a reason to celebrate," he added. Stalin further brushed away the credit given to him for the burial."All the credit for this success goes to our team of lawyers," he said emphatically. "Kalaignar won this battle even after his death." Stalin followed a long line of speakers at the emergency Executive Committee meeting organised by the DMK in Chennai. The party's MLAs, MPs, district secretaries and members of other allied wings were also invited to the meeting. Senior leaders including Duraimurugan, J Anbazhagan, EP Duraisamy and Subashree Jagatheesan  recollected their fondness and respect for 'Kalaigar' and emphasised on their belief that Stalin will follow the path laid out by Karunanidhi. The late leader's 'heir' was praised by DMK leader TR Baalu for the manner in which he dealt with the Government's refusal to allow Karunanidhi to be laid to rest near the Anna memorial.

The Madurai bench set aside the detention order after stating that the crimes allegedly committed by them fell under the Goondas Act, therefore negating the possibility of booking them under NSA.

The Madras High Court on Tuesday quashed an order detaining six members of the left-leaning Makkal Adhikaram under the National Security Act (NSA) for their alleged involvement in arson and violence during the May 22 protests in Thoothukudi district. The Madurai bench set aside the detention order after stating that the crimes allegedly committed by them fell under the Goondas Act, therefore negating the possibility of booking them under NSA. The six men - Kaliyalur Rahman (47), Mohd Anath (21), Mohd Ishad (20) , Kottaiyan (48), Saravanan (35) and Velumurugan(42) were booked under NSA in June based on orders from the district collector Sandeep Nanduri who was acting under directions from the State Home Secretary, Niranjan Mardi. They were initially booked under sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (Rioting), 148 (Rioting armed with deadly weapon), 353 (Assault against public servant), 341 (Wrongful restraint), 436 (Mischief by fire or explosive substance), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt through dangerous weapons or means), 188 (disobedience to order by public servant), 448 (Trespassing), 307 (attempt to murder), 506 (ii) (Criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal code. The division bench of Justices CT Selvam and Basheer Ahmed read out definition of the Goondas Act and  pointed out that, "It readily can be seen that in all the adverse cases as also the ground case the detenues answer to the description of GOONDA." The Court further stated that the detention orders against any goonda will be under the Goondas Act and not under National Security Act. As per law, on and after the commencement of this Act, no order of detention under the National Security Act can be given. The division bench of Justices CT Selvam and Basheer Ahmed further added that, "The order of detention has to be based either on the detaining authority being satisfied that the person against whom the order is being made is acting in any manner prejudicial to the security of the State OR on satisfaction that such person is acting in any manner prejudicial to the maintenance of public order. Satisfaction of detaining authority cannot be on both counts at one and the same time. Hence, the detention order is liable to be set aside." The judges quoted two cases - Bhupal Chandra Ghosh v. Arif Ali [1974] and Satya Brata Ghose v. Arif Ali [1974] to explain the judgement. According to the orders in these cases, when detention is justified by placing reliance on both bases -security of the state and maintenace of public order, then it has to be held illegal."One has to imagine three concentric circles, in order to understand the meaning and import of the above expressions," explained the bench. "'Law and order' represents the largest circle within which is the next circle representing ‘public order’ and the smallest circle represents ‘security of State’. It is then easy to see that an act may affect law and order but not public order just as an act may affect public order but not security of State. It is in view of the above distinction, the Act defines the expressions "acting in any manner prejudicial to the security of the State" and "acting in any manner prejudicial to the maintenance of public order" separately," it added. The Makkal Adhikaram tells TNM that the outfit sees this judgement as a victory."Our members have been wrongly accused of endangering national security when all they did was protest," says  Marudhu, spokesperson for Makkal Adhigaram. "This was a planned effort by the government to frame us and hide the mistakes of the police. And now this has been proven," he adds. The Makkal Adhikaram's team of lawyers is, however, still working towards ensuring the release of its members. "Four of them are in Palayamkottai prison while two are in Pudhukottai prison," says the spokesperson. "They did not incite any violence. We hope they will be released soon."

This reassurance comes in the wake of expelled party leader MK Alagiri's statements against the leadership in the DMK and claim that his father's loyalists were on his side.
Top DMK leaders on Tuesday made it clear that the party was solidly behind its Working President M.K. Stalin, whose father and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi died a week ago. This reassurance comes in the wake of expelled party leader MK Alagiri's statements against the leadership in the DMK and claim that his father's loyalists were on his side.  An emergency meeting of the Executive Committee was called at the DMK headquarters in Chennai with a single agenda - to pass a resolution condoling the death of DMK President Karunanidhi.   The meeting was chaired by Stalin, who is also the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. After the passage of the condolence resolution that praised Karunanidhi and listed his numerous achievements, party leaders including Duraimurugan, T.R. Baalu and others expressed their support to Stalin and urged him to take over the party's mantle. "Working President and soon-to-become President, lead us and we will obey your orders," Duraimurugan thundered.  Addressing the gathering, former Union Minister Baalu said in a quivering voice: "The commander of the army is no more. Nobody has to tell who will be the next commander. Stalin has all the qualities to lead."  Senior leader Subbulakshmi Jagatheesan pointed that several political rivals believed that DMK won't last after Anna passed away. "But Kalaignar led us to victory in 1971 and took the party forward. Now people are asking if Stalin can take the party forward. But just like how Kalaignar kept Periyar and Anna's ideology alive, we will hear news that DMK won over 200 seats in the next election. We have to create this success for Stalin," she said.  Several District Secretaries of the party also voiced their staunch support to Stalin as the party's top leader. On his part, Stalin said: "I have lost not only my leader but also my father."  Opening up on the subject publicly for the first time, he said he had pleaded with Chief Minister K. Palaniswami to allot space at the Marina beach to bury Karunanidhi. "I held the hands of the Chief Minister and pleaded for space. They did not agree."  After the announcement of Karunanidhi's death at 6.10 p.m. on August 7, the government issued a statement formally refusing a burial space at Marina. Praising the DMK's legal team led T. Wilson, Stalin said they approached the Madras High Court late at night and won the case the next day. Stalin said had the case been lost, a situation would have arisen leading to his own burial next to Karunanidhi.  Tuesday's meeting came a day after expelled DMK leader M.K. Alagiri, Stalin's elder brother, asserted that "true loyalists" of Karunanidhi were with him and that Stalin was a poor leader. Paying homage to Karunanidhi, Alagiri, expelled from the DMK in 2014 for criticizing party leaders, told reporters that he had poured his anguish about the party to his father and not about his family.  But as expected, the Executive Committee lined up behind Stalin.   The elevation of Stalin as the party President will have to be decided by the DMK's General Council. The party has not announced a date for a General Council meeting.

The Court ordered Corporation Commissioner to submit a report by August 27 with details of corruption cases and the action taken by the body in such cases.
The Madras High Court, on Tuesday, rapped the Greater Chennai Corporation for widespread corruption within the body, causing frustration among the citizens to get things done. A single-judge bench with Justice SM Subramaniam was hearing a plea from a petitioner who requested the court to order for the removal of a generator that was allegedly placed in front of her house illegally. Refusing to accept a submission by D Karthikeyan, the Corporation Commissioner, the judge remarked that people are unable to get approvals, certificates and documents from the corporation without paying bribes to the officials and are ‘absolutely frustrated’ due to this. According reports, the court said that the refusal is because the action initiated by the Corporation so far to minimise unauthorised and illegal constructions in the city, is not satisfactory. Demanding to know if inspections were conducted by the Corporation officials to ensure that all buildings had the necessary approvals, the court ordered the Commissioner to submit a report describing the situations and process by which each case of corruption was carried out by various officials in the corporation. The court ordered the Corporation Commissioner to submit a report by August 27 giving details on the nexus between the corporation, police, metro water and electricity. The court also wanted to know the number of cases booked by the Vigilance Cell of the Corporation under the Prevention of Corruption Act and the action taken in those cases.  The court also directed the Commissioner to clarify whether the property details of the Corporation officials was verified by the statutory body. The judge ordered action to be initiated against officials who had failed to collect property tax promptly leading to a huge loss to the public exchequer, according to The Hindu.

From increasing freedom fighters’ pension to employment quota for medal winning sports persons, key takeaways from Edappadi Palaniswami’s speech.

Even as India’s 72nd Independence Day was being celebrated across the country on Wednesday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami’s speech from the ramparts of Fort St George made promises for sports persons and freedom fighters while recounting the progress of the state across various sectors. The Chief Minister announced that the present government had completed project works to the tune of Rs 22439.92 crores and begun work on plans worth Rs 16680.84 crore. Here are key takeaways from the speech: 1. Quota for sports persons The Chief Minister announced a 2 percent sub quota for sports persons who win medals at the state and national level events representing Tamil Nadu and India as well as those who take part in international sports events. The quota would be applicable to certain posts in government and public sector units in the state. 2. Hike in pension for freedom fighters The Chief Minister also announced a hike in pension for freedom fighters from Rs 13,000 to Rs.15,000 per month while the family pension (given to heirs) for freedom fighters was raised by Rs 1,000 from Rs 6,500 to Rs 7,500. 3. Tamil Nadu tourism Reiterating the Central government’s finding that Tamil Nadu had fared amongst the top three in Foreign Tourist Visit, Chief Minister revealed that Tamil Nadu had seen 34,50,00,000 domestic tourists and 48,60,000 international tourists over the past year. However, the state government is yet to set up a state board for eco tourism as promised in 2017. On August 3, the Central government revealed that it had received no proposal for the development of eco tourism circuits from Tamil Nadu. 4. Salary hike for Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation employees Citing the salary hike given to TNSTC employees following a week long strike by protesting employees over wages, the Chief Minister announced that pending dues to workers had also been paid. While the government and employees reached a compromise at 2.44 percent hike, several trade unions across districts continue to protest the Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Bill. The Bill considers the inclusion of private cab aggregators as well as third party insurance. 5. Forefront of secularism Further, the Chief Minister also stated that Tamil Nadu was at the forefront of secularism in the country. An Amnesty International report in July this year pointed to seven instances of hate crimes in the state, placing it fourth in the country. The report- which tracks crimes committed against people based on their caste, religion or ethnicity- cited the incidents of caste-based violence reported from Vellore, Villupuram, Thanjavur, Sivaganga, Madurai and Kanyakumari districts.

'DMK opposed Amma photo': TN govt admits tit-for-tat in Karunanidhi Marina burial issue

TN Minister Jayakumar said that the cases filed by the DMK against Jayalalithaa’s memorial along Marina had obstructed them when they asked for land to bury Kalaignar.
A week after the death of former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, the politics over his burial at the Marina refuses to die down. In scathing remarks against the DMK, Tamil Nadu Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar said it was the party’s fault the government refused to grant Kalaignar a resting place at the Marina. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, he said, “Did DMK participate when the portrait of sacrificial leader Puratchi Thalaivi Amma (former CM J Jayalalithaa), who had dedicated her life for the welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu and Tamils, was inaugurated in assembly? They didn’t participate that day. They also got someone to file a case saying no images (of her) should be kept in government offices. They’ve also objected to a memorial at the Marina. Who is behind all this? DMK’s instigation and cases filed by the DMK. So the cases they filed were an obstacle to them. If the cases they filed were not obstacle, we would definitely given them (the land) that day itself.” The minister was referring to the portrait of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, which was unveiled at the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly in Chennai in February this year, Presided over by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, Assembly Speaker P Dhanapal unveiled the 7-foot portrait of the late AIADMK supremo. However, the main Opposition DMK and its ally, Congress, boycotted the unveiling ceremony stating that it set a wrong precedent as she was a convicted in the disproportionate assets case. Jayalalithaa, who passed away in December 2016, was posthumously convicted, along with close aide Sasikala in February 2017. The Supreme Court, however, abated the case against Jayalalithaa on account of her death. Soon after Karunanidhi’s death was announced on August 7, the AIADMK government refused to allot space for the burial of the former Chief Minister's mortal remains near the Anna memorial, citing legal reasons. Karunanidhi’s sons MK Stalin, MK Alagiri and daughter Kanimozhi personally met the Chief Minister on the day to make a request for a burial spot for their father next to his mentor and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister CN Annadurai. Recounting the meeting at the emergency Executive Committee meeting organised by the party on Tuesday, Stalin said, "I feel no shame in admitting that we held on to the CM's hand and pleaded with him to give us the burial space in Marina. All this because it was my leader's last wish. Even then they gave no affirmation. Finally, to make us leave, he told us, 'We'll see'.” While the AIADMK was accused of playing petty politics over the issue, the DMK moved the Madras High Court late at night, winning their case to ensure that their party leader’s wish to be buried near his mentor was fulfilled.

Making of an iconic Chennai brand: How SPI Cinemas created the ‘Sathyam Experience’

Stating that it was “extremely hard” to hand over Luxe to Jazz Cinemas, Kiran recalls that he was unable to stand his ground given the political climate at the time.
On a wet Independence Day morning, Kiran Reddy – the CEO of SPI Cinemas – walks into a swanky but empty office in Chennai. It has been three days since news broke that the city’s iconic cinema exhibitor – originally known as Sathyam Cinemas- will be acquired by PVR, India’s leading multiplex chain for nearly Rs 850 crore. Since then, Kiran and his team have been dealing with the outpouring of anger and disappointment that the acquisition has come to mean for Sathyam loyalists and patrons. But did they anticipate the extent of the backlash?   “I think we expected it. I don't think we necessarily expected the extent of the backlash. But the intensity was exactly the same as in 2015,” Kiran tells TNM, referring to the first time the news of the negotiations between SPI Cinemas and PVR made headlines. He adds, “Even the day before when we signed that transaction, we had this discussion and PVR expected it too because of what happened last time. They understood that there may be a difficult reaction and in the conversation that we had, we said it was not personal and it was people just venting on how attached they are and how much they love the (SPI) brand.” Following the collective outpouring of reactions on social media, Kiran put out a press statemen on Monday to reassure patrons that everything associated with the “Sathyam Experience” would stay and PVR’s acquisition was only the “dawn of a new chapter” – one that would only go on to “elevate” the movie-going experience. Having emerged as one of the largest cinema exhibition players in south India with 76 screens spread across 10 cities and 100 more screens in the pipeline, the SPI Cinemas CEO explains the rationale behind the decision: “The business was growing really fast. It was difficult for us by ourselves to sustain that level of growth without bringing external capital. So, if not now, it would have been 6 months, a year or 2 years later. I needed to do this. I could have brought in private equity, but private equity would have to exit after some years. It would have gone through the same cycle. So, I needed to find a home.”   Making of a brand Sathyam Cineplex, as it was known back then, was established in 1974 and housed three screens – Sathyam, Subham and Santham. Kiran’s family bought it in the 80’s more as a real estate investment, given that the Royapettah complex was situated in the heart of Madras. And while Sathyam had become a go-to place for residents, it did not reach the ‘cult’ status that it now enjoys until Kiran entered the scene in 1997, when he returned from the US. “I had nothing to do when I returned and I didn’t really find a place in the existing family businesses. There were too many constraints. So, this was something that I ended up going to in the evenings and weekends. Nobody really cared about it. It was not really a business. It was the first consumer-centric thing that I had the opportunity to interface with,” he recounts. Left to manage a shabby theatre complex, it started off with the little things – ensuring the toilets were clean, training the staff, improving the sound system. And although small, it paid off. Kiran notes, “Just doing little things made a big difference. When things are in such a poor state, simply putting the effort to do something better gets appreciated. And over a period of time, people start taking that as the norm, and base and you have to do more and more. Why people love us is because we have constantly made the effort. That started the journey, that for every little effort, people started to recognise the value.”   Food journey Experimentation and innovation have driven SPI Cinemas in every sphere – including adopting the latest projection or audio technology. But it is in food and beverages, where ‘Sathyam Cinemas’ really stands out from the rest. Ask any loyalist, and they’ll give you a list of must-try items in order to get the ‘Sathyam experience’. Whether it’s their buttered popcorn (the corn sourced from Nebraska), cream donuts, cold coffee, chaat - all this and more (barring bottled water and aerated drinks) are made in-house.     Speaking about the food journey, Kiran says, “When we just had Sathyam, we had an external canteen contractor, who would come in and serve food. We went through a legal process- we tried to get that person to move on, they refused to move on. We won that legal process. We got control of the food. Then we started looking at various establishments in the city and whether they could become the source for food. Our cold coffee comes from that era. Our Head of Experience and F&B, he used to run a coffee shop at that point of time which didn't do well financially, but did well in every other way. His cold coffee was really good, he started off as a vendor and then joined the business. We started outside but slowly started doing things in house.” But it didn’t just stop with just reinventing the staple cinema food. SPI has pushed the boundaries when it comes to F&B and thanks to its food innovation lab – some of the latest additions include goth ice cream (made out of activated charcoal) and ice cream donuts. Looking back on the journey, Kiran is modest about the success of the brand, calling the past 20 years a haze. Ask him what is the one thing that sets SPI apart from the others and he chuckles, “There are so many things that we have done. For every person, the brand means something different. For example, for some people the old Sathyam has such a strong relevance - they had their first date there. Someone told me, they were studying in college and they threw stones at the cinema. For some it was a movie experience, and for some it wasn't a movie experience.” He points out that there were other iconic cinema theatres back in the day – such as Safire complex in Gemini. “There were other places too that meant something to people. Unfortunately, those cinema theatres got demolished. They never kept up and pushed the relevance. We had the advantage of both - the advantage of the memories that people carried and the advantage of the effort we put in new things, the innovation. So, we got the best of both worlds with the business,” says Kiran, modestly adding, “None of this was strategy. So, don't assume we were so smart. Absolutely nothing. It’s just a journey that evolved and became this, without us realising what it had become.” The encounter with Sasikala family Although unique, SPI Cinema’s growth story has had its share of problems – most notably when it was allegedly arm-twisted into selling Luxe, its 11-screen multiplex to Jazz Cinemas in 2015. Jazz Cinemas belongs to relatives of VK Sasikala, the aide of then Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. Stating that it was “extremely hard” to part with Luxe Cinemas, Kiran recalls that he was unable to stand his ground given the political climate at the time.  “It was the worst period of my life. but if I look back at it, I don't know if it was the worst or best period of my life. The worst period because I went through the lowest phase of my life. But looking back, it's probably the best event that happened in my life. It changed me completely. It made me realise that my happiness was not linked to all of that. I could actually find a way to be happy, no matter what the environment threw at me. I would say that was truly one of the most beneficial things that came out of it - my ability to move on, my ability to forgive, my ability to feel positive in a significantly negative situation,” he recounts.   And as another chapter begins for SPI Cinemas following the acquisition, I ask Kiran what many patrons want to know: ‘Will the name change?’   “I think it makes absolutely no sense to change what is good. To me, the way I see it happening, it is the best of both. We will retain the good of what PVR does and combine it. If our brand is extremely strong in one environment then it is natural that that brand should continue in that environment,” he says. For now, rest assured the Sathyam experience is here to stay. And heck, who knows? Maybe if you’re lucky you’ll get that butter popcorn with the ‘flavour-it-yourself’ seasoning at a PVR near you.

Geetha named the child Sugandhiram(freedom in Tamil) since she found him on Independence Day.
While Independence Day on Wednesday meant a rainy government holiday for most Chennaites, Geetha a 45-year-old homemaker awoke to the faint wails of a crying baby. In the wee hours of Wednesday morning, Geetha’s milk man awoke her and confirmed her doubts about noises coming from the stormwater drain near her house in Valasarvakkam.   Walking the rainswept pathway, Geetha discovered to her horror, that it was a newborn baby. In gut wrenching visuals that have emerged on social media, Geetha is seen bending down and reaching deep into the storm water drain to pull out the baby. The pink fleshed newborn is crying, choked by its own umbilical cord tied around its neck.  Even as neighbours around her are heard screaming and run to fetch water, Geetha, holding the child firmly, unravels the umbilical cord immediately.  Geetha, who washed the baby clean, rushed the boy the Institute Of Child Health (ICH) in Egmore along with her neighbours. For me, saving the life of the baby was most important. I didn’t care about anything else at that point. It had rained all of last evening. If it had rained like that this morning as well, the baby would have been swept away. It leads to the drainage from that point.”   While others were uncertain about the next course of action, Geetha called the police right away.  “We informed the police, did basic first aid and took him to the hospital immediately. They have kept the baby at the incubator at the Egmore hospital.”   Moved by what was a roller-coaster day for her, Geetha also named the child. “I named him Sugandhiram because I found him on Independence Day. From today, he is Sugandhiram(freedom in Tamil). He can grow up freely,” she says.   Speaking to TNM, one police official at the Valasaravakkam Police Station said, “No case has been filed. The child has been handed over and is receiving treatment at the Government Hospital For Women and Children in Egmore. The baby is doing fine. We will decide upon further action accordingly.”   A former actor, Geetha says she would happily raise the baby if she was entrusted with him.   “I am at home now. I used to be in the cine field. I was in my daughter’s house when this happened. I love children. Even now, if they give me the child, I will raise him well. But wherever the child is, he should be happy. He has suffered enough.”   The baby has reportedly been placed under the Cradle Baby Scheme of the government and is under treatment at the hospital.
