EPS also played badminton in a veshti to show off his sports skills.
The white veshti has been synonymous with Tamil Nadu politicians for decades now. But CM Edappadi Palaniswami or EPS as he's known, appears to be on a mission to prove just how versatile a dress the veshti can be. Even as the monsoon season in Tamil Nadu is making it increasingly harder to get out of the cosy comfort of our beds, EPS hit the ground running with his exercise, and just in time for the cameras, too. The TN CM worked out a storm, what with his badminton games and straight up pull downs at the gym. In the first of two videos that have gone viral in the state, the Chief Minister is seen playing badminton at a newly inaugurated park in his home district of Salem on Thursday. Reportedly his favourite sport, the Chief Minister is seen serving the green shuttlecock to his partymen, even as his security personnel scurry to pick up it up after each serve. But, with the Chief Minister serving out of the line, even the mediapersons who were there to document the photo-op ended up picking up the shuttlecocks! On Friday though, the CM topped his workout regimen with a quick visit to a state sports facility, where he sat on the machine fly. The Chief Minister, who was beaming like a model who's reached his BMI goals in a gym advertisement, managed to do 10 reps of the fly. Immediately switching to the lat pull downs, EPS was handed the bar by an officer on his security detail. The Chief Minister can be seen struggling to pull the bar all the way down at the gym, but managed to do four reps. The Chief Minister is also spotted listening intently to the instructors before embarking on the arduous task. Giving professional models - whose salads always seem to tell them hilarious jokes - a run for their money, EPS was all smiles when he got up victoriously from the machines and walked away. With just nine months to go for the Lok Sabha elections in the country next year, it appears that the Chief Minister is planning ahead for what is likely to be a tough fight.

However, Chinnathambi, father of Health Minister Vijaya Baskar, has denied making any such confession.
Just over two weeks after the Income Tax Department submitted its report on the bribery allegations during the 2017 RK Nagar bye-elections in Tamil Nadu, a statement in the report, made by the father of Health Minister Vijaya Baskar, has put the state government in a quandary. Wide-scale allegations of bribery during the RK Nagar bye-elections by the various factions of the AIADMK had resulted in the cancellation of the elections, which was scheduled to be held in April 2017. Following raids on the properties of minister Vijaya Baskar, the IT Department had said that unaccounted cash worth Rs 20,00,000 was discovered. A portion of the report on the bribery allegations submitted by the IT Department to the Election Commission (EC) and the Tamil Nadu government was accessed by the media on Saturday. The report revealed that Chinnathambi, father of Health Minister, was questioned regarding the discovery of interview call letters addressed to prospective candidates for employment in the state’s nutrition meal programme. In a statement recorded by the Income Tax Department in April 2017, Chinnathambi stated that “the amount of Rs 12,96,000 was received from various persons to get a job for each of them.” During the April 2017 raids at the Minister’s Pudukottai residence, the Income Tax Department seized cash worth Rs 20,00,000. A part of this cash (Rs 12,96,000), which was found in brown envelopes, was set aside for the jobs in the nutrition meal programme. Soon after news of the report emerged, Chinnathambi denied confessing to the  IT Department. In a statement released to the media, he said that his family pays their income taxes and abide by the law. He said, "It is painful to me and my family that such false reports are being published. In the April 7, no cash was recovered in the raids that took place in my house." He also stated that the news reports were politically motivated. Incidentally, the IT report also notes the sworn statement of the Minister denying this. Tamil Nadu Health Minister @Vijayabaskarofl's father has confessed about bribes worth Rs 13 lakh, says IT Department report. pic.twitter.com/91GHV8Mcir— Manasa Rao (@manasarao) September 1, 2018 ‘Corruption receipts’ In yet more incriminating evidence, the report also details the findings at the premises of Vijaya Baskar’s aides. In one such search at the flat of his personal assistant J Srinivasan in Chennai, two documents “containing date-wise notings of fund collection and its application” had been recovered from an email address operated by the PA. The Income Tax Department concludes that the date-wise entries revealed that the collection of funds had been made through private/personal assistant to the Health Minister from various entities/persons connected to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The details of ‘funds collected’ as per the receipts are as following: Rs 3,91,28,000 collected between July 23 and August 18, 2016 Rs 1,99,25,000 collected between August 19 and September 1, 2016 Rs 84,50,000 collected between September 2 and September 12, 2016 Rs 6,81,82,000 collected between September 14 and October 12, 2016 Rs 2,04,90,000 collected between October 13 and October 27, 2016 Rs 5,14,16,500 collected between November 1 and November 9, 2016 Mining violations The IT Department report also states that permission for mining at a stone quarry, jointly owned by Minister Vijaya Baskar and one B Kubendran, was in violation of the mining norms. In the quarry’s submission to the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA), it had been stated that the plan for mining rough stone would be carried out over 4.91 hectares. An environment clearance had also been granted for the operations. The approved depth for quarrying was 43 metres at a quantum of 2,95,642 cubic metres. However, an aerial photogrammetric survey conducted by the Valuation Cell of the IT Department revealed in February 2017 that the actual depth of the quarry was 72 metres with a total of 22,76,306 cubic metres of rough stone and 2,75,562 cubic metres of a mixture of gravel and earth, totalling to 25,51,86 cubic metres. The widespread allegations of corruption and bribing voters during the RK Nagar bye-elections, which was necessitated by the death of former Chief Minister and MLA J Jayalalithaa, resulted in the cancellation of the bye-polls in April 2017. Documents unearthed following the raids on the properties of Health Minister Vijayabaskar had indicated that crores of rupees had been set aside for distributing to voters in the constituency.

The court asked the Centre to consider fitting the boats with GPS devices, which could alert the coast guard if the fishermen strayed from the Indian maritime boundary.
The Madras High Court, on Saturday, wondered why the Centre has not found a permanent solution to the alleged attacks on Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy. A bench of Justice S Manikumar and Justice Subramonium Prasad were hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition filed by Fishermen Care, an NGO, seeking the court to direct the Centre to refer the issue to the International Court of Justice. According to reports, the bench raised the question since many rounds of talks have been held between the central government and the government officials of Sri Lanka, and also between the fishermen of the two countries. The bench also said that the authorities could think of fitting the boats with a GPS device, which would alert the nearest coast guard authorities when the boat crosses the stipulated number of nautical miles, thereby crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line. It added that such initiatives would help in reducing the number of complaints of Indian fishermen getting attacked while fishing within the Indian boundary. The Centre had already filed an affidavit in the court as a response to the PIL stating that since there are no treaties between the two countries which could establish that the attacks on Indian fishermen is a human rights violation, India cannot take the issue up to the International Court of Justice. Meanwhile, Additional Solicitor General of India G. Rajagopalan sought two weeks’ time to obtain instructions from the Centre on the issue. He said that it was wrong to say that only Indian fishermen were facing problems on high seas because the Indian Coast Guard has also apprehended Sri Lankan as well as Pakistani fishermen for straying into the territorial waters of India.

The police claim that Abirami, the woman, poisoned her children in a bid to elope with her boyfriend, Sundaram.
A 33-year-old woman is missing after she allegedly fed poison to her children and killed them in Chennai on Saturday. The police claim she did so in a bid to elope with her boyfriend, Sundaram, who has been detained in connection with the murder. According to reports, Abirami and her husband Vijay lived in a rented house in Moondramkattalai near Kundrathur. They got married 8 years ago and had two children, aged 7 and 4. On Friday, Vijay, an employee in a private bank, came home late at night. On seeing the house locked, he tried calling his wife, whose phone was switched off. He then reportedly broke open the door to see the children on the bed frothing in their mouths and the wife missing. He immediately called for an ambulance and took them to a hospital where the doctors pronounced them dead. The bodies were then sent to the Government General Hospital, Chromepet, for post-mortem. The Kundrathur police have registered a case based on the complaint filed by Vijay. Police sources said preliminary enquiry revealed that Sundaram and Abirami had an extramarital affair and were planning to leave the city. Sundaram works in a biryani shop near Abirami’s house and he reportedly told the police that she killed the children in order to come and live with him. The police have also found Abirami’s scooter parked in Koyambedu Mofussil Bus Terminus and suspect that she might have boarded a bus and left the city after committing the crime, as a report in Times of India. They have collected the CCTV footage from the terminus to confirm their suspicions. Special police teams have been assigned to trace Abirami.

Anitha, a medical aspirant, fought against NEET in the Supreme Court.
In 2017, S Anitha killed herself after her dreams of becoming a doctor were crushed because she was unable to clear the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). A year later, her family has now built a library in her memory in Kuzhumur village in Ariyalur district. The library was unveiled on Saturday – the first anniversary of Anitha’s death. The library has been built at a cost of Rs 45 lakh. It was inaugurated by the President of Dravidar Kazhagam K Veeramani and Thol Thirumavalavan, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi leader. It was built using the money given to the family by various political parties and other organisations after her death and it has around 2,500 books in it, according to reports. After the inauguration, K Veeramani said that Anitha had fought for an exemption from NEET until her last breath. A year since her death, her wish of freeing the students from NEET has not been fulfilled, he added. He also slammed the Union government, claiming they were not concerned with the difficulties faced by the students in rural areas and from marginalised sections of the society. Thirumavalavan addressed the gathering and said that NEET has made marks unimportant and that it shattered the ambitions of many students who dream of pursuing MBBS. Anitha was a Dalit girl, the daughter of a daily wage labourer, who scored extremely well in her 12th board exams. However, she failed to make the cut in NEET, and unable to take the disappointment over not getting a medical seat, she killed herself on September 1, 2017. She had in fact impleaded herself into a petition challenging the applicability of NEET in Tamil Nadu in the Supreme Court. However, the Supreme Court had on August 22 ordered the Tamil Nadu government to begin medical admissions based on NEET. The SC verdict came after the Centre refused to endorse Tamil Nadu’s draft ordinance seeking one-year exemption from NEET. People in need of counselling can contact Tamil Nadu Health Department’s round-the-clock helpline – 104. Chennai-based Sneha suicide prevention centre can be contacted at 044-24640050.

Responding to the allegations on Saturday, Minister SP Velumani stated that Stalin should realise he is the DMK President, and not the Chief Minister.
Leader of the Opposition in Tamil Nadu and DMK President MK Stalin has called for a CBI probe into project tenders issued for implementing the 'Smart City' mission. Slamming SP Velumani, the Minister for Municipal Administration, Stalin alleged nepotism in awarding tenders. Responding to the allegations on Saturday, SP Velumani stated that Stalin should realise he is the DMK President, and not the Chief Minister. He also countered by saying that the tenders were floated online and included a seven-year maintenance period which would save the exchequer Rs 300 crore. According to a report in the Deccan Chronicle, Stalin said, “The website of Acetech machinery Components India Company has shown that there was no work relating to smart city project so far. The fact remains that how the tender worth Rs 149 crores was given to such an inexperienced company...Commissioner of Greater Chennai Corporation D. Karthikeyan was appointed as chairman and managing director (CMD) hastily. It is a norm that every tender should be given to those companies, which ask for minimum amount. However, in this case, the norm was violated.” As per a report in The Hindu, Stalin further said that the top bureaucrat at the Tamil Nadu Urban Finance and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (TUFIDCO), Chandrakant Kamble, had been transferred from his posting as Chairman as he had refused to award the tender contract to the company manufacturing metal sheets. Stalin called for action against Minister SP Velumani and other bureaucrats reportedly party to the scam by setting up a CBI ‘special inquiry committee.’ According to a report in the Times of India, Stalin also asked why the Centre was quiet on the matter, given that they jointly fund the project along with the state government According to its mission statement, the Smart City project is an urban renewal and retrofitting program by the Government of India with the mission to develop 100 cities across the country, making them citizen friendly and sustainable.

Madras HC bans protests on Marina, says public order is equally important

The court quashed the permission granted to petitioner P Ayyakannu to hold a single-day protest on Marina beach.

The Madras High Court quashed a single judge’s April order allowing protests on Marina beach in Chennai. A bench comprising Justice KK Sasidharan and Justice R Subramanian quashed the order passed by Justice T Raja in April that gave permission to P Ayyakannu, the leader of National South Indian River Interlinking Agriculturist Association, to hold a protest at Marina beach. The bench upheld the action taken by the state government to maintain law and order, and said that the beach cannot be used for staging agitations because public order is equally important. "The right to protest, no doubt is available to all the citizens in a democratic country like ours. Unfortunately, this right to protest has been continuously misunderstood as a right to inconvenience the general public. The protesters who claim to espouse the cause of the public, often forget that their right to protest ends when the other person's right to free movement and "right to not to listen to" starts," read the order.  The court also said that the State always has the power to impose reasonable restrictions with regard to the time, the place and the manner in which the protest should be held and that the authority in whom such power is conferred is expected to balance the right of the protesters as well as the right of the common man. "Thus, while recognising the fact that dialogue, dissent and deliberation are imperative and necessary in a democracy, other aspects like public order, safety and general public interest must also be given equal weightage and significance, which ultimately make up the true hallmark of a democratic welfare state. The State is therefore correct in regulating the Assembly at Marina in larger public interest," observed Justice KK Sasidharan.  Speaking to TNM, Ayyakannu said that the Supreme Court had earlier ruled that the government's job is to regulate protesters, and that it has no right to impose a ban on protests."In a democratic country, protesting is included in the rights granted to us by the Constitution. The government and the police can only regulate us and not ban us. The Supreme Court had given us that right in New Delhi. Based on that, we will appeal in the Supreme Court immediately," he said. The Tamil Nadu government had filed an appeal challenging the permission granted to Ayyakannu to sit on fast at Marina beach. The fast was planned to highlight the plight of farmers in relation to the formation of the Cauvery Water Management Authority. Earlier, rejecting the TN government and Chennai police's stand that protests cannot be held at Marina, Justice Raja had said, "Had the then British Government banned Marina Beach from being used for any public meeting, Marina would not have witnessed the presence of Mahatma Gandhi and Thilakar on its sands for the noble cause of Freedom. Therefore, when the then British Government itself did not think of banning the demonstrations at the Marina Beach, this Court is not inclined to accept the submissions made by the respondent." Additional Advocate General PH Arvindh Pandian represented the Government of Tamil Nadu while Ayyakannu was represented by advocate S Muthukrishnan. Muthukrishnan argued that there is no law that bans protests from being held at Marina, and hence the state must permit Ayyakannu to sit on a fast at the location. The state government said that giving permission would be tantamount to a disruption in the law and order situation in the area and suggested alternate locations for holding the protest. The arguments in the case concluded in August, and the bench had reserved its verdict without specifying a date.

Remember, remember September: Why Dravidian History Month should be observed

Opinion
Numerous occasions changing the fortune of Tamil Nadu and its neighbours took place during September: Here are some examples.
Remember, remember, the fifth of November. A statement whose origin is closely linked with the treason committed by Guy Fawkes and his Catholic associates against the English Crown and Parliament, is now a clamour widely associated with questioning the status quo across the globe. The human urge to search for pattern amidst the chaos – the need to weave myths to conserve the unspoken history and lived experiences via metaphors – has led to numerous key days we remember by heart. We, the people of the Dravidian stock, now have a phrase to remember, to inherit, to disseminate far and wide, and that is, “Remember, remember, the month of September.” Among the various thinkers and ideologues this world has seen, EVR Periyar occupies a unique position, as he not only established the contours of his ideology, but also took the ideology to people and allowed the ideology to evolve. Along the same lines, there are no parallels for CN Annadurai, who contradicted the founder of the ideology, while scripting a journey, which led to the same ideology ascending to the higher echelons of power politics. The month of September here assumes paramount importance for being the birth month of both Periyar and Anna. Birth of the Justice Party Oppression of the highest order has always been the seed for revolution in any form. It was the omnipresent Brahminism that fuelled oppression, exclusion and appropriation of power structures, which then assumed the form of the Home Rule Movement under the leadership of Annie Besant. Dr C Natesa Mudaliar, who was then organizing non-Brahmins witnessed this mobilization, understood the long-term implications of this emerging circumstances, which would lead to institutionalized Brahmanism. He, in turn, engineered a series of meetings, that led to the emergence of South Indian Liberal Federation (SILF), also known as ‘Justice Party’. The seed for SILF, the Home Rule Movement, was founded on 1916, on the 12th day of September. September was the month when Justice Party completed its first full term as the ruling party of Madras Province. Justice Party, which was founded opposing the asphyxiating Brahmin dominance, had elected representatives from non-Brahmin castes, Christian and Muslim communities. At a time when Brahmin domination was overwhelmingly felt in employment and university education, Justice Party attempted to bring representation in employment in accordance with the proportion of the communities in the population. The right to vote for women in Madras Province was made possible by the Justice Party, from which even Brahmin women benefitted. The first Government, led by the Justice Party, abolished the usage of the term ‘Panchamas’ (outcast) and introduced the term Adi Dravidas (the first Dravidians), created the Hindu Religious Endowment Board, which questioned the monopoly held by Brahmins in temple affairs. Read: Karunanidhi and MGR: A checkered friendship, and a lesson in civility and empathy Though the first Justice Party Government ended its rule in September, it marked the start of the glorious history of the Dravidian Movement, which sought to ensure the creation of a ‘New Deal’ for the millions of people who were oppressed under the weight of Brahmanism. The pioneering social engineering attempts by the first Justice Party government led to their victory in 1923, but they lost the 1926 election due to a rift which emerged in the party. The political backflips later led to the emergence of a government led by Subbarayan, with support of Justice Party. Under Periyar’s guidance, his long-term demand for a functioning Communal G.O. saw light during Subbarayan’s time, which ended in September, 1930. This marked the month when Justice Party came back to power with a single majority again. Periyar and Justice Party In 1934, with the repeal of Non-Cooperation Movement by Mahatma Gandhi, Congress decided to contest the elections. This changed circumstances led Justice Party to embrace Periyar. Though Periyar was against the Indian National Congress of that time, he didn’t accept the invitation from the Justice Party immediately. He forwarded a Work Plan to the Congress and Justice Party, which was structured along socialist and Dravidian ideals. While the Brahmin-dominated Congress rejected the work plan, the non-Brahmin-led Justice Party accepted it. This was the first step taken by the Justice Party to fit itself within the Dravidian framework structured by Periyar in 1934, on the 24th day of September. During the year 1938, an Anti-Hindi imposition brigade was assembled and they undertook a historic march from Uraiyur in Tiruchirappalli. The day, when this 42-day long march ground to a stop, was 11th of September. On the same day, Periyar addressed a public meeting, and rallied the cry, “Tamil Nadu for Tamils”, a slogan which still can be heard in some parts of Tamil Nadu until this very day. Institutions reflect the nature of the majority of its constituents, in spite of the existence of a history and a narrative in place. Though Justice Party accepted the leadership of Periyar, its key leaders, in spite of being non-Brahmins, were not keen on abolishing the power structures propped up by caste, and were relentlessly chasing government titles and positions. In order to weed out out such interests, Periyar, through Annadurai, passed certain progressive resolutions. This angered certain Justice Party stalwarts and led them to strategize to out-manoeuvre Periyar by gaining the support of Babasaheb Ambedkar, who was then waging a struggle against Brahmanism – a struggle entrenched in the Indian subcontinent’s history. In 1944, a meeting was arranged by Sunday Observer’s P Balasubramaniam in Connemara Hotel, in which Babasaheb Ambedkar gave a speech. To their agony, Ambedkar pronounced in his speech, the need for a leader like Periyar to dismantle the ossified structures of Brahmanism and the need for clear work plans like those proposed by Periyar. The day when Babasaheb Ambedkar lent his word of credence to Periyar and his Dravidian ideology was September 24. Annadurai and Periyar September assumes paramount importance as the key ideals of the Dravidar Kazhagam were drawn on this month. The idea of ‘Dravida Nadu’ assumed its final form in the conference that happened on 29 September, 1945, in Tiruchirappalli. In addition to that, the institutional framework of the Dravidar Kazhagam was also finalized then. The ubiquitous black shirt, which impacted the cultural landscape of Tamil Nadu, broke into the scene, with the formation of the Black Shirt Brigade in this conference. It is also to be noted that the friction between Periyar and Annadurai came to the fore with regards to the question of wearing black shirts, as Annadurai didn’t subscribe to the idea for he associated fascism with uniformed outfits. The seeds of friction, which were sown in September of 1945, began to germinate by September 1947 with regard to August 15, India’s Independence day. Under these circumstances, a conference on ‘Separation of Dravida Nadu from Indian Union’ was arranged by Periyar on 14 September, 1947, which was boycotted by Annadurai and his coterie of supporters. But later, Annadurai and Periyar joined hands when then Chief Minister Omandur P Ramasamy banned the Black Shirts Brigade. Formation of DMK Periyar decided to marry Maniammai, who was much younger than him as the Hindu Civil Law did not allow women to adopt nor to get adopted. Annadurai and his supporters vehemently opposed his decision. On 10 September, 1949, Kudiyarasu carried a news item which announced the change of name of KA Maniammai to EVR Maniammai, which was the final straw for Annadurai’s group in Dravidar Kazhagam. The incensed group met in a house in Chennai to pass a no-confidence resolution against Periyar, which led to the formation of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam under the leadership of Annadurai on 17 September, the birthday of Periyar. The formation of DMK created waves in the politics of Tamil Nadu, and in turn India, as it emerged as the first non-national party to form a majority government in a state, in 1967. Anyone who browsed through the pages of newspapers after the demise of Kalaignar Muthuvel Karunanidhi would now be acquainted with the countless social justice schemes introduced by the party. Why else is September important? September is a big month not only for Tamil Nadu, but other societies too that realize the danger of losing federalism. In a reality that we are living in, where the rights of the states in the Indian Union is routinely encroached by the Central Government, the Rajamannar Committee constituted by the First Government of M Karunanidhi assumes paramount importance. Questioning the status quo of Central Government having a final call on Centre-state relations, the Rajamannar Committee was constituted to examine the asymmetric power relations, which had started to manifest even then. The outcome of the committee was a 383-page report, which not only emerged as the key document on Centre-state relations for Indian Union, but also for Sri Lanka. When the question of Eelam Tamils emerged due to the asymmetric race relations in Sri Lanka, the report assumed importance in reimagining the future of the island, during the Thimpu Peace Talks as well as during the later day peace talks brokered by Norway. In the Indian Union, Chief Minister of West Bengal Jyoti Basu sent a White Paper to the Central government demanding the need to devolve power to states, as stated in the Rajamannar Committee report, the outcome of another committee which was constituted on 22 September 1969. September is also known for historic moments which failed to happen. A historical attempt to unify AIADMK and DMK was indeed undertaken and it was spearheaded by Biju Patnaik of the Janata Dal. Actor-politician MG Ramachandran and Karunanidhi, who were then engaging in vicious attacks via meetings and newspaper interviews, were called for a meeting in private and the date was 12 September, 1979. While the meeting ended on a positive note, Karunanidhi and DMK were viciously attacked in the presence of MGR the very next day in a public meeting of AIADMK, which in turn led to the unification attempts flounder. Read: How Biju Patnaik nearly pulled off a DMK and AIADMK merger If and if the unification had seen the light of day, the classic Dravidian party versus Dravidian party clash that we see in Tamil Nadu, until this very day, might not have happened. Along the lines of the legacy of Karunanidhi and MGR, September occupies a key moment in the legacy of Jayalalithaa as well. With the involvement of Jayalalithaa in AIADMK, her ascendance to the key position of Propaganda Secretary was quick. But soon the position was taken away from her and she was sidelined. When political pundits decided to write a post-mortem report about her political career, she was reinstated as Propaganda Secretary of AIADMK on the month of September, in 1986. If not, she would have carried the tag of a leader who was sidelined by MGR before his demise, which in turn would have impacted her later day political fortunes. The pattern takes a sad turn, as it was in September that Jayalalithaa, who carried forward the unique legacy of MGR for scripting two consecutive Legislative Assembly victories, was admitted in hospital. She passed away in December 2016. In addition to that, interesting events like MGR releasing his 29-page ideological manifesto by name ‘Annaism’, the appointment of present-day Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam as Chief Minister in 2001 by Jayalalitha, that signalled his entry into the upper echelons of power, also happened in the month of September. September: With numerous events to draw inspiration from, the countless brothers and sisters of Dravidian stock, not only from Tamil Nadu or the ones who speak one of the Dravidian family of languages, but also the ones from backward class and oppressed sections (Bahujans) across the Indian subcontinent, now have a phrase to remember, to inherit, to disseminate far and wide, and that is, “Remember, remember, the month of September.” Disclaimer: Views expressed are the authors' own.

The police claim that they arrested the men on a tip-off, and that one of them confessed to being a ‘secret member of ISIS’.
The Coimbatore police have arrested five men based on a tip off that they were plotting to kill Hindu Munnani leader Arjun Sampath and Sakthi Sena leader Anbu Mari. Following the arrest, the police claimed that one of the men confessed to being a ‘secret member of ISIS’. All five of them have been booked under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) under sections that refer to terrorism and terrorist activity. The police, in a press release on Sunday stated that the Inspector of the B-3 station in Coimbatore acted on a tip-off that a man called Aashik and his four friends were planning to do something sinister to Hindu Makkal Katchi leader Arjun Sampath and Sakthi Sena leader Anbu Mari. The message received by the reportedly inspector said that the group was arriving in Coimbatore from Chennai, and hence the police rushed to the Coimbatore Junction railway station to nab them. Four men – Ismail (25), Salauddin (25), Sadik Ali (29) and Shamsuddin (20) from Chennai, apart from Aashik were picked up by the police from the railway station for questioning The police in their statement said that the men confessed that they were “familiar with Arjun Sampath, since he is a popular TV personality.” The police said that the men confessed that Aashik had shared Anbu Mari’s pictures with them, and asked them to come to Coimbatore to attack them. “Ismail also told the police that a few others are also involved in this operation and that he is a secret member of the ISIS, and a few persons involved in the plan belong to National League Party, and that they all have similar outlook on ISIS,” read the statement.  The police arrested them on Saturday and seized six cell phones and Aashik’s two-wheeler. Aashik also surrendered five sickles, the police said. “Since the intention of these people was to promote religious hatred between people of two faiths, cause law and order problems, disturbance in religious harmony and in the unity and security of the country, cases have been registered,” the police statement said. They have been booked under sections 143 (Punishment for unlawful assembly) and 120(B) (Punishment of Criminal Conspiracy) of the IPC and sections 15 (Terrorist Act), 16 (Punishment for Terrorist Act), 18 (Punishment for Conspiracy), 20 (Punishment for being member of terrorist gang or organisation) and 38 (Offence relating to membership of a terrorist organisation) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 on September 1,” according the press release. The five accused have been remanded to judicial custody and are lodged in the Coimbatore Central Prison till September 4. The officers from the National Investigation Agency will also be investigating the accused on their alleged links with ISIS, the police said.

Rameshwaram fishermen plan indefinite strike over diesel price hike, unreturned boats

Hike in diesel prices and ongoing tussle with the Sri Lankan government regarding unreturned boats are some of their concerns.
With the petrol and diesel prices reaching an all-time high on Monday, people from various walks of life have raised criticism. Fishermen from Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu on Monday declared an indefinite strike that would last until the government considered their requests. Diesel per litre cost Rs 76.75 on Monday, which was Rs 75.689 three days ago on August 31. Speaking to TNM, NJ Bose, President of Anaithu Visai Padagu Meenavar Sangam, Rameshwaram, said that they’ve been pushed to go on an indefinite strike for the following reasons: “On one side the hike in diesel prices have hit us hard. On the other side, the boats that are in Sri Lanka, over 183, have still not returned. This has made living very tough for us. Several lakhs of people depend on fishing for their livelihood.” While an announcement to release the 168 boats that were taken into custody since 2014 was made by the Sri Lankan government in July, none in good conditions have reached so far says Bose. “The boats are practically unsalvageable. It is of no use. We will also be requesting reparations from the government for those fishermen who have been directly affected,” said Bose. The association has also planned for a protest on September 7 at Rameshwaram bus stop, where fishermen from Southern coastal districts like Ramanad, Rameshwaram and Cuddalore will participate. They also plan on visiting Delhi to move the centre into action. “Ours is a district where there’s no farming. We only have fishermen. The government gives us a subsidy of Rs 10 per litre upto a total consumption of 1,800 litres in a month. We use close to 5000 litres of diesel in a month, therefore, the subsidy is of little help. How can we operate in such unfavourable conditions?” asks S Emarit, Mechanised boats President, Rameshwaram. He also adds that over the past few years, many fishermen from the state have been forced to migrate to other western coasts because of adverse working conditions.

TN group on a mission to conduct health camps for sanitation workers

As per the law banning manual scavenging, every sewage work is entitled to regular medical check-ups and vaccination.

In 1993, India enacted a law prohibiting the employment of manual scavengers. Twenty years later, the law was amended to include the rehabilitation of those employed as manual scavengers and provide for their alternative employment. In an effort to put these workers on the path to rehabilitation, the Tamil Nadu Urban Sanitation Support Programme (TNUSSP) has launched an initiative to provide them with the regular health screenings that they are entitled to by law. In partnership with Equitas Development Initiatives Trust, the first camp was conducted by the Coimbatore City Technical Support Unit of the TNUSSP on Friday. However, the practice of manual scavenging continues unabated in India with unofficial reports recording the employment of thousands of persons as manual scavengers. In Tamil Nadu, a survey conducted by the government in June last year claimed that 363 persons were employed in manual scavenging in urban areas and none in rural areas. However, activists have refuted this figure, stating that the actual figure is much higher. According to the TNUSSP, while some rudimentary arrangements for health surveillance exist for the sanitary work force attached to government organisations (municipal corporation, municipality etc), there is no similar arrangement for private septage operators. Added to this, the group also observes that health-seeking behaviour is poor among the desludging operators. With the objective of finding a sustainable solution to the problem, the Coimbatore City Technical Support Unit of the TNUSSP initiated the process of holding regular health screening camps for private as well as government desludging operators. Explaining the sanitation process to TNM, Asma of the Indian Institute for Human Settlements, that works closely with the TNUSSP says, “Once people flush a toilet, they don’t know what happens. We think that there is an underground sewerage system that takes it in and cleans it. But studies have consistently shown that it is not economically feasible for any city to have an underground sewerage system. The topography does not allow it. These systems require lot of maintenance. In the absence of these systems, people are expected to build septic tanks. But once you build one, it has desludged regularly, which means people need to come and clean it regularly. This has to be done mechanically with a truck and protective gear and not manually. It has to be taken to a treatment plant and either converted into reusable products for composting or it has to be made safe and released into the environment. This is the full cycle of sanitation.” The group works with both the builders of septic tanks as well as sanitation workers in order to put in place measures for the proper building, usage and disposal of waste from these septic tanks. They have developed a guide book of designs and estimates of toilet construction within the stipulated cost by the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) scheme. According to them, the key objective of developing this guide book is to empower the beneficiaries – sanitation workers, masons, engineers – hired for the construction of these toilets to make an informed decision on the selection of a suitable design, depending upon their own financial capability as well as the topography of the location. The first of the health camps for the workers was held at the Periyanaickenpalayam Town Panchayat office on Friday. The medical camp involves a general health check-up with examination of height weight, blood pressure, cholesterol level, blood sugar test and ENT(ear, nose, throat) check up. The group further refers those found needing further treatment to the Karpagam Medical College Hospital, Coimbatore for free treatment, which includes hospitalisation as well as surgery. The TNUSSP also hope to institutionalise regular health screening camps for the desludging operators and sanitary workers in the future by incorporating components like respiratory health, treatment for skin problems and vaccinations for children.

State President of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Tamilisai Soundararajan was seen losing her cool at the Thoothukudi Airport on Monday and asking a police woman to take action against a student who shouted anti BJP slogans on a flight. According to the police, Sofia Lois, a student from University of Montreal, Canada, who was also travelling in the same flight with Tamilisai Soundararajan raised anti-BJP slogans. Enraged by this, Tamilisai Soundararajan engaged in a verbal fight with the student and later with the police who were stationed in the airport and had tried to calm her down.  Tamil Nadu BJP state president Tamilisai Soundararajan lost her cool after a co-passenger shouted “fascist BJP government down down” inside the Tuticorin airport. The co-passenger was detained by the airport police for questioning. pic.twitter.com/P1bMBPpl47 — Shilpa Nair (@NairShilpa1308) 3 September 2018 “When I am taking my bag, a customer shouts 'BJP’s Fascist government down down'. Is that freedom of speech?” she is seen asking in the clip. The leader has also allegedly lodged a complaint with the Pudukkottai police station about the incident after which the police have detained Sofia Lois for questioning. After giving complaint against Sofia in the airport, Tamilisai met the reporters and said that Sofia could belong to some terror outfit by seeing the way she behaved. "She did not look like a normal person. I am not scared or worried because of her. The other passengers inside the flight should not be affected by her, that is why I responded. In a public place people can shout, but nobody has the right to shout inside an aircraft," she said. Athisiya Kumar, Advocate for Sofia Lois spoke to TNM and said that the BJP leader could have handled the issue in a better manner. “She (Tamilisai) is a good doctor, a senior leader. Couldn't she have just spoken to her? Instead of shaming her in public. She (Sofia Lois) is just a student. It's so common to do this in Canada. We don't have that freedom in India. Instead of advising her, she has insulted her. She also instigated her cadres who have been even more vulgar,” he alleged. Adding that Sofia is strong in her stand of not apologising, he said that her father has filed a complaint against the cadres with the police. Talking to TNM, Superintendent of Police Murali Ramba IPS said, “We got the complaint from the leader and are conducting inquiry. After that, if there is a case they will get legal opinion and then file an FIR.” Update: An FIR has been filed against Sofia under Indian Penal Code Sections 290(Punishment for public nuisance in cases not otherwise provided for), 505(Statements Conducing to Public Mischief) as well as Section 75(1) of the Tamil Nadu City Police Act, 1888.

Anbumani said the family members of Manikandan were forced to agree for organ harvest by the hospital officials.
Former Union Minister and PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss on Monday demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the organ transplant scam in Tamil Nadu. In a statement here, Ramadoss citing a news report said that at a time when several Indian patients were waiting for organ transplant, organs harvested from a person declared brain dead in Salem were transplated to foreign nationals admitted in two hospitals in Chennai. Ramadoss said a Keralite youth, P. Manikandan, was declared brain dead by a private hospital in Salem after he met with an accident in Tamil Nadu in May 2018. The PMK leader said the family members of Manikandan was forced to agree for organ harvest by the hospital officials. The relatives of the deceased then complained to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who then wrote to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami who instituted a probe. As per the probe report, the heart and lung of Manikandan were harvested. The heart, which was orginally meant for a Ukranine national, was transplated to a Lebanese national in a private hospital and the lung was transplated to an Israeli patient, Ramadoss said. Although there were Indian patients who were ahead in the wait list for organ transplant, the two harvested organs were given to foreign patients. Ramadoss said a senior government official had directed transplant of an organ to a foreign national. According to the PMK leader during the past one year alone, 95 foreign nationals got 127 organs violating the organ donation/transplant norms. Ramadoss said, the probe report by putting the blame on two outsourced staff Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu (TRANSTAN) has provided an escape route for others involved in this scam. He said on an average Rs 12 crore was charged from foreigners for organ transplants. According to Ramadoss, the scam running into hundreds of crore was being perpertrated in Tamil Nadu.

Controversy
A day after 28-year-old Sofia Lois was arrested for calling BJP a ‘fascist’ govt inside an aircraft, BJP State Head Tamilisai Soundararajan talks to TNM.
Tamil Nadu BJP State President Tamilisai Soundararajan, on Tuesday, said that she stands by her action of filing a complaint against Sofia Lois for raising anti-BJP slogans inside and outside an aircraft. Speaking to TNM on Tuesday, a day after Sofia Lois, a 28-year-old student, was arrested and remanded to 15 days judicial custody, Tamilisai Soundararajan said that freedom of speech was fine as long as it was within two people in the open. “Freedom of Speech can be there. If you and I speak outside, it is fine. But inside an aircraft, in front of passengers she shouldn’t talk like that, right? Again she shouted saying that she has freedom of speech. The way she behaved, raising her fist, she was doing that inside the aircraft also saying ‘BJP fascism ozhiga’. I was just passing her, she stood up and shouted showing her hand like that,” she said. Tamilisai was travelling on seat number 3, while Sofia was on seat no 8. According to the BJP leader, Sofia shouted the slogan inside the aircraft and later at the baggage collection area too as she had gone to complaint to the airport manager. Adding that the way in which Sofia behaved was suspicious since she raised her hands and shouted, Tamilisai said that the whole incident seems to be pre-planned. “You would have noticed that she has tweeted before the flight took off. Yesterday we found out that she tweeted. My flight was at 10.20am and it took off after ten minutes delay. So she has tweeted that Tamilisai is with me and I am going to raise slogans. It is preplanned right?,” she asked. Thoothukudi Police arrested Sofia Lois late on Monday night and took a case against her under IPC sections 505 (statements conducing to public mischief), 290 (public nuisance) and Section 75 of the Tamil Nadu City Police Act. Sofia has been remanded to judicial custody for 14 days. Her father, Dr AA Samy, had also given a complaint to the Inspector of Police, Pudukkottai police station, against Tamilisai Soundararajan for instigating her workers against the family and causing them mental agony. In his complaint, AA Samy said that his wife, his daughter and he were travelling from Chennai to Thoothukudi in the same flight and that his daughter raised slogans in the flight while getting down. He also stated that Tamilisai did not say anything inside the flight and that the issue began after they reached the baggage area. “Upon her instigation, more than 10 workers blocked our way in the airport and did not let us go outside. They issued death threats to us. The BJP leader also threatened me and my daughter. They also took our pictures without our permission,” read the complaint, in Tamil. The complaint requested the police to take action against the BJP leader and others who made the family ‘fear for their lives’. Rubbishing Sofia's father's complaint that BJP workers were unruly, Tamilisai said that she restrained the BJP workers who were with her and gave a written complaint to the authorities. She said that she was arguing with the police official in the airport and not advancing towards Sofia as it was shown in the media. “My workers were all furious, I stopped them and went to write a complaint. The police official was like ‘illa madam, ponga ponga’ that came out in TV like I was advancing towards her. It is not like that. I am a well-educated person, I know what I am. I know things. I am also a female politician. When she has some rights, I also have privacy and I also have some rights. So when I travel, I should also have privacy right. So she shouldn’t have shouted like that. What I did was correct only,” Tamilisai said.  Justifying her filing a complaint, Tamilisai said that Sofia’s background, the words she used and the way she raised slogans was suspicious and it didn’t feel like an ordinary passenger’s behaviour.

Sofia was remanded to judicial custody of 15 days on Monday evening for shouting at the BJP leader on a plane.
A day after the Tamil Nadu police came down heavily on Sofia Lois, a student who raised a slogan against BJP State President Tamilisai Soundararajan on a private airline, a court in Thoothukudi district has granted her bail. On Monday morning, the BJP leader and the TN student got into an altercation after the student shouted “BJP’s fascist government down down” as they were about to de-plane. In a video clip that emerged shortly after the plane landed, Tamilisai can be seen losing her cool and confronting the student over her sloganeering. "When I am taking my bag, a customer shouts 'BJP’s Fascist government down, down'. Is that freedom of speech?" Tamilisai is heard shouting, even as a police officer at the airport tries to pacify her. BJP cadre present along with the leader can be heard yelling at the student and her parents. In a move that brought condemnation from several quarters, Sofia was then booked under Indian Penal Code Sections 290 (Punishment for public nuisance in cases not otherwise provided for), 505 (Statements Conducing to Public Mischief) in addition to Section 75(1) of the Tamil Nadu City Police Act, 1888. Following Tamilisai’s written complaint, a trial court in the district remanded Sofia to judicial custody for a period of 15 days. Speaking to TNM, Tamilisai justified filing a complaint, alleging that Sofia’s background, the words she used, and the way she raised slogans were suspicious, and it didn’t feel like an ordinary passenger’s behaviour. Late on Monday evening, Sofia was taken ill and admitted to the Thoothukudi General Hospital following complaints of severe stomach pain. However, no action has been forthcoming on the complaint filed by Dr AA Samy, Sofia’s father. In his complaint, AA Samy said that his wife, his daughter and he were travelling from Chennai to Thoothukudi in the same flight as Tamilisai and that his daughter raised slogans in the flight while getting down. He also stated that Tamilisai did not say anything inside the flight and that the issue began after they reached the baggage area.

SC rejects TN plea for urgent hearing on Sterlite

NGT had permitted Sterlite to carry out administrative works inside the premises of the plant.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected Tamil Nadu government's plea for an urgent hearing of its appeal against an NGT order permitting mining major Vedanta to access the company's administrative office inside its Sterlite copper smelting plant at Tuticorin. A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice A.M. Khanwilkar and Justice D.Y. Chandrachud posted the matter for hearing next week, after counsel appearing for the state mentioned it. Tamil Nadu had ordered the closure of the Tuticorin plant, around 650 km from Chennai, following protests and the death of 13 persons in police firing on May 22. Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami had on August 12 chaired a meeting of ministers and officials to decide the next course of action after the National Green Tribunal's (NGT) August 9 orders in the case filed by Vedanta Ltd, which owns the Tuticorin plant. While permitting access to the administrative office of the plant that was shut down, the NGT had barred the Sterlite management from accessing the production unit on the premises and directed the District Magistrate to ensure compliance with its order. The tribunal had observed that no environmental damage would be caused by allowing the company to access its administrative section.
