TN woman accuses village strongman of rape, cops dilute case to harassment

Sexual Abuse
The woman alleges that she has been raped and sexually abused by the man who was overseeing her MGNREGS work. Following her complaint, she has been forced to leave the village.

For over a month now, Usha (name changed) has been living with her family in Vadipatti town, 25 kilometres from Madurai. The 36-year-old woman was forced to move out of her village Ramaiyanpatti, because she dared to file a complaint against a village strongman, Tirupathi, who is the husband of the Panchayat clerk. Usha alleges that Tirupathi has been raping and sexually abusing her for four years, and when she finally spoke out about it, she faced taunts and harassment from other residents in the village. Worse still, her complaint of rape has allegedly been watered down by the police to sexual harassment, and Tirupathi was let off by the police after three days in remand. “No further action has been taken against him, while we have been forced to move out of our house with no employment,” Usha tells TNM. ‘Tirupathi created a hostile work environment’ In April 2011, Usha found employment under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) as Panithala Porupalar (Worksite Supervisor), a job that she eased into by helping her aunt, who was previously in charge. Usha’s responsibilities at work included assigning job cards to those who came in seeking employment under the 100-days employment scheme. According to Usha, while she was supposed to report to the Panchayat clerk Revathy, it was Revathy’s husband Tirupathi – a village strongman – who was the de facto boss. Tirupathi had devised a plan to swindle government funds by misreporting the number of job cards issued, Usha says, and he made her and another coworker tamper with the records. “Tirupathi would ask me to enter more job cards than what came in during the day, and pocketed the extra money. He convinced us that he would take care of any repercussions and we did as we were told,” says Usha. In 2013, when a social audit was due for the village, Tirupathi allegedly told her she would have to take the blame for the fraud – unless she provided him with sexual favours. “He called me to his house claiming his wife needed to speak to me, but when I went there, his wife was not around,” Usha says, “He wanted me to provide him sexual favours, and when I refused, he threatened that he would put the blame on me for the financial fraud.” “Since then, he has come to my house multiple times when no one else was home, and forced himself on me,” Usha says, accusing Tirupathi of sexual abuse and rape. Four years of trauma Tirupathi allegedly continued harassing and raping Usha for the next four years – he would come to her house drunk and unannounced, and several neighbours believed she was in a consensual affair with him, she alleges. In 2017, Usha quit her job with a lot of difficulty and joined a private hospital in Madurai where she worked for about six months. “Even then, he would make calls and threaten to expose my secrets to my family. I realised my previous co-worker too was helping him get to me,” she says. In August 2018 Usha’s husband Suresh* got wind of the rumours and confronted her. “Because Tirupathi would force himself upon me in my own house, villagers started believing that I was doing it out of my own volition. Problems escalated between me and my husband and I even attempted suicide,” she confides. But Suresh then realised that his wife was facing sexual abuse from Tirupathi, after their neighbour explained to him that Tirupathi had misbehaved with her as well. “I understood my wife was not at fault and I knew Tirupathi had to be brought to justice,” says Suresh. Apathetic police watered down complaint On January 22, 2019, Usha, along with her husband and Sumathy (name changed), submitted a complaint to the Madurai Collector’s office with help from Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) members. Over two weeks later, Vadipatti police registered her complaint and on February 13, she got a call from the Social Welfare department. An FIR was filed on February 16 – but not for rape or sexual abuse. Instead, the police watered down her complaint and filed charges of sexual harassment [under Section 4 of TN Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act, 2002] and criminal conspiracy [under IPC Section 506 (1)]. Further, the complainant in the FIR has been named as Usha’s husband instead of her. TNM has accessed copies of both Usha’s complaint and the FIR, and while Usha has accused Tirupathi of rape in her complaint, the FIR makes no such mention. “Tirupathi was remanded by the police for three days and then let out on bail. No further action has been taken against him,” Usha says, alleging that the police were also insensitive towards her. ‘Villagers ganged up against us’ Additionally, ever since she filed the complaint, the people of Ramaiyanpatti have been hostile to her and her family, Usha says. “They believe that in my complaint, I have named all women employed under the MGNREGS scheme as having been abused by Tirupathi, which is not true. I’ve only said there are more such women like me who have faced sexual harassment at the hands of Tirupathi,” she explains. “We’ve been shamed and abused by the villagers for no fault of ours, while the man who is my abuser, lives free and enjoys their support,” Usha adds. *Names Changed

DMK seals rainbow coalition: But has Stalin yielded too many seats to allies?

Lok Sabha 2019
The DMK has inked poll pacts with eight allies including the Congress to take on AIADMK’s ‘mega alliance’ that includes BJP and PMK.
The last fortnight has seen two major parties in Tamil Nadu - AIADMK and the DMK scramble to finalise alliances. The AIADMK-led ‘mega alliance’ has firmed up poll pacts with PMK, BJP, TMC, PT, New Justice Party and the NR Congress. If Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami manages to get Vijayakant on board, the ruling party is likely to contest only from around 20 seats – a sharp contrast to 2014 when Jayalalithaa chose to go alone and ended up winning 37 out of 39 seats.  The DMK, on the other hand, had maintained that they would contest from at least 25 seats. However, on Tuesday, as talks concluded, it became clear that the party will be contesting only from 20 seats in Tamil Nadu. The 40 seats including the lone seat in Puducherry has been divided among its eight allies - Congress (10), CPI (2), CPI (M) (2), VCK (2), MDMK (1), IUML (1), KMDK (1) and IJK (1).  This decision by DMK President MK Stalin to cede ground to alliance partners has raised eyebrows in the state. While some political commentators believe it shows that the party is clearly nervous about its prospects, others point that it is a cautious and crafty move considering the current political climate in the state. Why only 20 seats? Speaking to TNM, shortly after the alliances were announced, a source in the DMK admitted that this was an electoral compulsion as talks with both the PMK and DMDK did not end favourably for the party. "With both these parties not joining us, other allies pointed out that we have enough seats to give away," says the party source. "Also, from the very beginning we have been looking to form a rainbow coalition of parties opposing the BJP. Our leader, MK Stalin, was also the one of the first people to say that all secular parties must come together, so, we needed to walk the talk," he adds.  Moreover, sources in the alliance tell TNM that the VCK, MDMK, KMDK and IJK have all been asked to contest on the DMK's rising sun symbol. The DMK has pointed out that this will greatly increase chances of winnability for these parties, at a time when they 'cannot afford risks'. And while the VCK and MDMK are considering whether to contest on their own symbol, the IJK and KMDK have agreed to the DMK’s demand. If all parties come on board, then the DMK will technically be contesting from 25 seats in the Lok Sabha.  The KMDK or Kongunadu Makkal Desia Katchi (KMDK) is a Gounder-based caste outfit in the western districts of Tamil Nadu. It is headed by General Secretary ER Eswaran. The Indhiya Jananayaga Katchi (IJK) meanwhile led by SRM Chancellor TR Pachamuthu has joined hands with the DMK for this Lok Sabha election. Till the 2014 Lok Sabha election, the party had been with the BJP. "There is really no need to accommodate these two parties. They don't have the ability to pull votes," opines TN Gopalan, a senior political journalist. "But by bringing them in and making sure they contest under his symbol, Stalin is making a very clever political move. He is clearly being cautious and wants to take no risks in this election," he adds.  But going by historical data of DMK's alliances for the Lok Sabha polls, former president M Karunanidhi has mostly given a large berth to alliance partners in the last two decades.  Always generous with allies? In 2004, then DMK chief M Karunanidhi said in an interview to India Today, that any layman would admit that the party does not act like a 'big brother' to smaller parties in the alliance.  True to his word, the DMK had only contested from 16 seats in that Lok Sabha Election. The Congress was given 10 seats, the PMK 5 seats, MDMK received 4 and the two Communist parties two seats each. In 2009, the DMK stood from 22 seats and gave 15 seats to the Congress and two to the VCK. It was only in 2014, after the DMK split from UPA-II, that the party decided to rely on its own strength to draw votes and contested from 34 seats. Two seats were then given to VCK and one to MMK (Manithaneya Makkal Katchi). The DMK and its partners did not manage to win even a single seat. "On its own, the DMK will not be able to win in the current political atmosphere," says political commentator and Associate Editor of Frontline, RK Radhakrishnan. "And this election is expected to come down to the wire. So even 10,000 or 20,000 votes will matter. And irrespective of who is standing, DMK resources on ground will have to be used," he adds.  But senior journalist TN Gopalan says the DMK is needlessly nervous. "It is somehow not able to convince itself that it can sweep the elections, even though opinion polls say that the party will do exceedingly well," says Gopalan, referring to the poll released by Republic TV. "At a time when the AIADMK has done nothing to endear itself to the people and PM Narendra Modi's popularity is at an all-time low in the state, the party should be exuding confidence by contesting more seats," he points out.  Even a current ally of the DMK which will be contesting from two seats questions the party's decision to accommodate groups such as the KMDK and IJK. "Even we are stumped by this decision. They will contest from the DMK's symbol but even then these are seats that the party can give to its own leaders," says the source at an ally party. While the CPI and CPI (M) have in the past shown their electoral prowess in constituencies such as Madurai, Coimbatore and Tenkasi, these parties, he points out that their support base has eroded."The DMK is acutely aware that it has no traditional support from the Kongu region, which is considered an AIADMK bastion. Which is why they may be hoping for support from these parties. As for the VCK, they are definitely required to ensure Dalit support just as IUML is required for the Muslim votes. IJK, meanwhile, could be lending media support due to their founder's influence," says Gopalan. "But the DMK in an effort to ensure nothing goes array, seems to have forgotten that it is the only alternative to the current government."

In the railway sector, he will launch the project for electrification of Erode-Karur-Tiruchchirapalli and Salem-Karur-Dindigul railway lines, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and cut the travel time for people and movement of goods on the route. During his trip, Modi would also unveil the statue of MG Ramachandran at Dr. M.G.R. Janaki College of Arts and Science for Women, Chennai through video link. Ramachandran was an actor and politician, who served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for 10 years between 1977 and 1987. He was conferred with Bharat Ratna. The Prime Minister will also interact with beneficiaries of the Ayushman Bharat scheme. Ahead of his visit, a holiday has been declared for schools in and around his poll campaign venue in Kilambakkam. According to a report in The Times of India, many private schools in Vandalur, Urapakkam, Kilambakkam and Chengelpet will remain shut on Wednesday. However, Kancheepuram Chief Education Officials have confirmed that board exams for Class XI students will take place at designated centres as announced and there will be no change to that schedule. Security has been beefed up in the area. More than 6,000 policemen have been deployed and a three-tier security arrangement is in place. According to the report, while there will be no major traffic diversions, commercial vehicles will not be allowed to take the Maduravoal Bypass or GST Road after 11am on Wednesday and vehicles will be diverted towards Old Mahabalipuram Road at Vandalur junction. Ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit, #GoBackSadistModi began trending on Twitter. Jaya death commission
Senior counsel PS Raman accused the commission of threatening action against doctors who don't appear before it, through statements in the media.
Two months after the expenses incurred for former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa's treatment was accessed by the media, the counsel for Apollo hospitals has taken objection to the bill being made available on public domain. Referring to the food and beverages section that came upto a whopping Rs.1.7 crore of the total expenses, senior counsel PS Raman stated that while the former CM consumed very simple food such as fruit juices, the rest of the bill was raked up by party leaders and functionaries. As per the break up on the food bill, Rs 48 lakh was spent on providing food and refreshments to the media posted outside the hospital. The hospital had to also provide food for police personnel, attenders and escorts. The food bill of Secretaries and other government staff ran to Rs 19 lakh, while the bill for attenders and others in the party was Rs 17 lakh."We have during the course of the case, objected to bills regarding her treatment being leaked to the media. This is being done to make the hospital look bad," says advocate PS Raman, talking to TNM. "In the bill they have also made it look like a lot of money has been charged for the food. So I told the court that she has eaten only simple food like fruit juices. So the bill cannot be this much for her alone," he adds. He further accused the Commission of threatening action against doctors who don't appear before it, through statements in the media. In his submissions before a Division Bench of Justices R Subbiah and Krishnan Ramasamy, the senior council said, “Almost every doctor, summoned by the Commission as witness, was harangued by the commission by asking, ‘Are you trying to cover up for Apollo’s fault? Such suggestive questioning of the doctors by Mr. Arumughaswamy himself amounted to hostile behaviour." Thirty three doctors have sworn in an affidavit before the Madras HC alleging ill-treatment by the commission. “It is unfortunate that the doctors who appeared before the commission were taken aback by the entire line of proceedings and the manner in which the evidence was recorded. Commission has been confronting medical and paramedical witnesses with Apollo in mind,” said senior counsel PS Raman. He also told the court that the panel did not have enough medical experts as part of the proceedings and alleged that their lack of understanding of the subject, was putting the hospital's reputation at risk.

The heat wave is expected to occur over isolated places in interior Tamil Nadu, and the maximum temperature is likely to rise by 2°C.
In what seems to be an early onset of the sizzling summer, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday morning issued a heat wave warning for isolated places in Tamil Nadu on March 6 and 7. The bulletin from IMD states that maximum temperatures are likely to rise by about 2-3°C over many parts of south peninsular India from Tuesday, thereby resulting in heat wave over isolated areas. The heat wave will occur over isolated places in interior Tamil Nadu in districts like Vellore, Thiruvannamalai, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Namakkal, Salem, Karur, Dindigul, Erode, Tiruppur and Coimbatore. Tiruvallur district of coastal Tamil Nadu too, is likely to experience heat wave. IMD predicts that maximum temperature is likely to rise by 2°C in these areas. On Tuesday, Tiruttani in Tamil Nadu recorded a maximum temperature of 40.1°C in the state, while Vellore came a close second with 39.2°C . The highest temperature in March that was recorded in Vellore last year stood at 38.4°C. Interestingly, the district reached its highest temperature for the month only towards the end, on March 24 and never this early. Popular weather blogger Pradeep John, who goes by the name TN Weatherman, observed on social media that temperatures will rise in interior parts of Tamil Nadu as a result of “offshore winds and increase in land breeze". “First 40°C of the year in interior Tamil Nadu can be expected in the next 5 days,” he writes. Pradeep also lists down possible reasons for the heat wave in the region. He also adds that any particular region is likely to experience heat wave only when its maximum temperature reaches at least 40°C for the plains and 30°C for hilly regions. Pradeep also notes that while Chennai’s temperature will remain around 34-36°C, it is likely to see the hottest day of the year.

Unidentified flying object near naval base in Chennai causes security scare

Security alert
The Fort police are currently investigating the case.
An unidentified flying object, that could possibly be a drone, over a naval base area in coastal Chennai triggered a security alert. The object was spotted on Monday night at around 9.00pm, and the incident took place near INS Adyar campus, close to Napier Bridge in Chennai. According to reports, the drone was flying too low to be registered by the naval base radar and was flying too high to be caught on CCTV cameras fixed on the ground in the area. The Navy on Tuesday lodged a formal complaint with the police to investigate further. The Fort police are currently examining CCTV footage in the area to check if any of the parked vehicles within 200 to 1000 metres range of the bridge, could have acted as a control centre for the flying object. This comes amid heightened tensions between India and Pakistan over the Balakot air strike. The Indian Air Force, early on February 26, carried out a pre-emptive air strike on the Jaish-e-Mohammad terror training camp in Balakot, which is located in Pakistan’s Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa area. Following this, the Pakistan Air Force violated Indian airspace in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch and Nowshera sectors, a day later. In the wake of this surcharged atmosphere, security forces have increased vigilance across the country. On Monday, Indian Air Force shot down a drone, after it was detected over the Indo-Pak International Border in Rajasthan. IAF radars detected the drone's presence in Indian airspace at around 11.30 am. In 2015, Chennai police had made it compulsory for persons wanting to fly drones, to obtain prior permission from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the city police.

According to the police, the accused Mohamed Ali suffered from mental health issues.

A man from Coimbatore was arrested on Tuesday after making phone calls with bomb threats and claiming that the bombs had been placed at the residences of the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalitha and actor Rajinikanth in Poes Garden, Chennai. Around 6 pm on Tuesday, the Chennai Police control room received the call from the man who said that bombs had been placed at these two residences and that the bombs would go off soon. The bomb squad was immediately dispersed to Poes Garden. After a thorough search of the premises, the officials deemed the phone call to be a hoax. Upon tracing the call, the police identified the accused as Mohamed Ali, who hails from Coimbatore. Mohamed has been arrested and detained by police. On questioning Mohamed, the police allegedly found that he suffers from mental health issues. Further information is awaited. Earlier, in February, a 37-year-old man was arrested for making a hoax bomb threat call to the police control room. According to a report by Deccan Chronicle, the man, a carpenter and painter in Teynampet, was in an inebriated state when he made the call. He claimed that he had overheard his wife talking on the phone about a bomb blast at the Chennai Central railway station. He allegedly made the call to get his wife in trouble as she often quarrelled with him. Similarly, in October 2018, in a similar instance, the Chennai police had received a hoax bomb threat call from 27-year-old Praveen Kumar, who had overslept and did not want to miss his train. He had made the call to the police control room to buy himself some more time to reach the station. Praveen initially stated that he had overheard some men at the Central station talk about a bomb being placed in the 6:15 am Kovai Express. It was only later Praveen realised that he had made the call from his cell phone. The Vadapalani police registered a case against Praveen and arrested him.

Mangai* was allegedly subjected to a casteist slur while she was sexually assaulted by a man in Ariyalur district on February 27.

Mangai*, a 26-year-old Dalit woman, was on her way to a ration shop in her locality in Ariyalur district to submit a form to buy subsidised rice for her family. But the trip on February 27 turned into a nightmare for Mangai after a Vanniyar man allegedly accosted her with a knife, raped her for an hour and hurled casteist abuses at her. Mangai and her husband Maran*, a daily wage labourer, live with their two children and Maran’s parents in Ariyalur. The couple belong to the Parayan community, which is a Scheduled Caste community in Tamil Nadu. On Wednesday afternoon last week, Mangai, a homemaker, was walking to the ration shop nearby to submit the required form for groceries under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) scheme, under which eligible families can purchase 35 kg of rice at Rs 2 per kilo. But the person-in-charge was not present, so Mangai decided to return home to manage her household work instead of waiting at the shop. But Mangai was intercepted by Gopi, a man belonging to the Vanniyar caste, an OBC community that is dominant in Tamil Nadu. Mangai begged him to leave her alone, but he allegedly assaulted and verbally abused her, then raped her. Mangai's ordeal is detailed in an FIR filed at the Ariyalur AWPS. “I've known Gopi for the past three years. He works with a tractor. My mother-in-law and I have gone to his house to work and that is all I know of him. After that he used to look at me in a wrong way and show gestures regularly which I used to ignore. On Wednesday, when I was coming back from the ration shop, he intercepted me and forced me to go with him. When I refused and moved forward, he grabbed me from behind by my hair,” according to the FIR. Narrating her painful experience, the FIR also mentions that Gopi allegedly used a casteist slur against her while sexually assaulting her, and threatened to kill her if she shouted for help. “He held a knife close to my neck, raped me for an hour and escaped from the spot. I somehow struggled to get up and then went home and narrated the incident to my mother-in-law,” Mangai says, in the FIR. Speaking to TNM about the incident, Mangai says that since Maran was out of town on Wednesday, she went to the police station with her father-in-law. However, she adds that the police in the station were anything but cooperative in registering an FIR. “I have studied only till class 7. Hence I don’t know the procedure much. The one who took down my complaint was in fact on the phone with the father of the accused. I fear that the police will side with them,” she told TNM. TNM spoke to a police officer in the Ariyalur police station where the FIR was filed. “We have registered an FIR under section 376 (Rape) and 506 (Criminal intimidation) of the IPC and relevant sections of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The accused has been arrested and remanded,” the police officer said. However, the district police denied succumbing to any form of pressure in the investigation. Maran, however, tells TNM that the issue is not about a single incident, but about the plight of Dalit communities. “Now this happened to my wife, what is the guarantee that it will not happen to an unmarried young girl? I want justice for my wife and a better society for the future generations of my caste. My wife was raped because of the fact that we cannot do anything as we are from an oppressed caste. I want this notion gone,” he says. *Names changed to protect identity

Fighting perception of neglecting TN, PM Modi visits state 4 times in 40 days

The BJP has been criticized for neglecting the state, whether it is over NEET or on the Cauvery issue and the Mekedatu project.
PTI
Wednesday will kickoff the NDA poll campaign in Tamil Nadu with Prime Minister Narendra Modi flying into Kancheepuram and launching various government schemes. Although AIADMK is leading the alliance in Tamil Nadu, Wednesday will see Modi launch the 2019 election campaign, with partners like the PMK and PT by his side. This is the fourth visit of the PM in less than 40 days, even as the poll bugle is yet to be sounded by the Election Commission. While the Prime Minister will on Wednesday unveil projects in roadways, railways, and energy sector worth Rs 5010 crore, his last visit was on March 1 to Kanyakumari. In that visit, Modi flagged off the Thejas Express between Madurai and Chennai, proposed the restoration of the rail line between Rameswaram and Dhanushkodi, the Pamban Bridge and unveiled projects worth nearly Rs 3000 crore. Significantly, Modi used the occasion to trumpet the roots of IAF pilot Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, who had been captured by Pakistan after his aircraft was shot down. The PM had then said, “It makes every Indian proud that the brave Wing Commander Abhinandan hails from Tamil Nadu.” It was lost on no one that the Prime Minister’s first public acknowledgement of the IAF pilot, who was released later the same day, came in Tamil Nadu. On February 10, Modi visited Tirupur and laid the foundation stone of a 100-bed Employees State Insurance Corp (ESIC) health facility. He also used the occasion to flag off the 10km section of the Chennai Metro Rail and also laid the foundation stone for a new building at Trichy Airport and modernization of the Chennai airport. All this was done via video conference from Tirupur.   The Prime Minister’s first visit to Tamil Nadu in 2019 was on January 27, where he laid the foundation stone for the All India Institute of Medical Sciences to be built in Madurai. This came four years after the AIIMS project was first announced by the Centre in February 2015.  On that occasion too, Modi unveiled other projects. But it’s not just the Prime Minister, who is raining sops and schemes on Tamil Nadu. His cabinet colleagues have been busy inaugurating schemes and projects for the state. On Tuesday, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman launched pension scheme for the workers in the unorganized sector in Chennai. The same day, Union Minister for Road Transport and Shipping Nitin Gadkari launched the special purpose vehicle for establishing a container terminal in Kanyakumari via video conference.  On Monday, Union Power Minister launched thermal and solar power projects in Thoothukudi. So, what explains BJP’s sudden thrust on Tamil Nadu? The obvious answer is that in a poll year, it is only expected that the ruling party at the Centre would push through as many projects and schemes as it can before the Model Code of Conduct comes into effect. But in Tamil Nadu, it is the perception battle that the BJP is fighting. Since April 2018, nearly every visit of the Prime Minister has seen the opposition led by the DMK and its ally the MDMK trend #GoBackModi on Twitter. MDMK Chief Vaiko has held protests ahead of Modi’s visits, waving black flags and releasing black balloons when the PM took to the sky to avoid demonstrators on the ground. But protests apart, the BJP has been criticized for neglecting the state, whether it is over NEET or on the Cauvery issue and the Mekedatu project – where the party has been accused of siding with Karnataka where it is in the Opposition. Following Cyclone Gaja that devastated parts of the state in November 2018, the anger against the Centre was two-fold. While many asked why the Prime Minister chose not to visit the cyclone-hit regions, others questioned the Centre for not releasing enough funds. While the Tamil Nadu government had sought Rs 14,190 crore for rehabilitation, the Centre released about 10% of this demand, approving funds for Rs 1146 crore.   This perception of neglect by the Centre has been so much that the PMK drew up a 10-point charter to justify its alliance with the AIADMK and the BJP.  The charter “to retrieve the rights of Tamil Nadu people” included declaring Cauvery delta districts as a protected farm zone, releasing the seven life convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, the state being exempt from NEET among other demands. Even the AIADMK, has most recently accused the Centre of cutting down funds meant for the state. In his budget speech in February, Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam had pointed out that over Rs 3800 crore was still pending from the Centre. The multiple visits and project unveilings led by PM Modi in a state where the BJP has negligible presence is an attempt to not only blunt this criticism but also to smoothen poll tie-ups with its allies in Tamil Nadu for 2019. And while the BJP has managed to cobble together a ‘mega alliance’ with the AIADMK, whether it will successfully be able to counter opposition criticism that it has “betrayed” Tamil Nadu’s interests remains to be seen.   Anna Isaac has reported on politics in Tamil Nadu for more than a decade.  Views are author's own

The Chennai Central Railway Station will be renamed after former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MG Ramachadran, announced Prime Minister Narendra Modi at an NDA political rally in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in Tamil Nadu to officially launch the National Democratic Alliance’s poll campaign for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Speaking at a rally at Kilambakkam, in Kanchipuram district, PM Modi announced that the Chennai Central Railway Station would be renamed after former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MG Ramachandran. It is unclear however whether this change of name can be done with General Elections about to be announced any day now. The announcement was made in the presence of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami, Deputy CM O Panneerselvam, BJP state chief Tamilisai Soundararajan and Union Minister of State Pon Radhakrishnan. The PM also praised MGR and said that he had visited MGR's birth place in Sri Lanka. The announcement comes at a time when the elections are just about to be announced and Modi's speech made it clear that the NDA has decided to co-opt MGR and Jayalalithaa's legacies into their election campaign.  “We are also seriously considering that flights to and from Tamil Nadu will have inflight announcements in Tamil,” he said. The promise of in-flight Tamil announcements also appears to be a bid to placate Tamil sentiment in the run-up to the Lok Sabha Elections. The BJP-led Centre has been accused multiple times of trying to impose Hindi on southern states. This is the fourth visit of the PM to Tamil Nadu in less than 40 days. On this visit, the Prime Minister launched several schemes, and unveiled projects in roadways, railways, and energy sector worth Rs 5010 crore. Following the government event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially launched the National Democratic Alliance’s poll campaign for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in the same stage. The ruling AIADMK in Tamil Nadu and the BJP formalised their “mega alliance” for the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections on February 19. The BJP will be contesting from five seats in the state. Union Minister Piyush Goyal, who announced the alliance, said, “All parties in alliance in Tamil Nadu will work together to strengthen the National Democratic Alliance and our confidence is all 40 seats in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry will be won by NDA in the Centre under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”

DMDK not important enough to wake Stalin up from his nap, quips DMK’s Duraimurugan

Election Fever
The sassy reply came when reporters asked Duraimurugan about alliance talks with DMDK.
Facebook
Has Vijaykant’s DMDK dug its own political grave by bargaining too hard and too long with the two Dravidian majors? The doors seem to have almost closed on the DMK alliance at least, if DMK treasurer Duraimurugan’s address to reporters on Wednesday is anything to go by. The senior DMK leader declared that he sent back a DMDK delegation who wanted to team up with DMK instead of the AIADMK because the DMK has no seats left to give. And when asked if Stalin held the same view, Duraimurugan quipped that Stalin, who is out of town, was taking a nap when he called him, and that DMDK wasn’t important enough for him to wake the party chief up. On Wednesday, a DMDK delegation led by Murugesan met Duraimurugan. “Vijayakant’s brother-in-law Sudheesh spoke to me over telephone. He said that they would like to move away from AIADMK alliance and join with us, and that they need a seat.” However, Duraimurugan said he told them that DMK leader MK Stalin, is out of town and that the DMK doesn’t have any more seats to give since the party had finalised its seat sharing agreement with others. “Then I came home and former MLA Murugesan and another friend were there. I told them the same thing, that we don’t have any more seats to give. What is the use of coming to us now? I asked them why they were here. Their answer to that question was not satisfactory. When this happened, Jagathratchagan and Ranipet MLA Gandhi were with me. I told them categorically that we don’t have enough seats to give. Then they left,” Duraimurugan added. When a reporter prompted Duraimurugan if DMDK was willing to accept the bare minimum number of seats, Duraimurugan asked, “Where do we have seats to give? All of them have signed agreements and have gone home, now where are seats? We ourselves have only 20 seats.” Asked if he had discussed this with Stalin, Duraimurugan said, “I called him, but didn’t get through. Some lady said that the subscriber is out of network area,” he laughed, “I called him again now. I was told that he was sleeping. I said no need to disturb him since this is not an important issue.” “He’ll come back tonight, I’ll tell him then,” Duraimurugan said. DMDK had earlier almost finalised an alliance with the AIADMK, according to Deputy Chief Minister and party leader O Panneerselvam. However, on Wednesday, Vijayakant’s photo was removed from Prime Minister Modi’s rally stage in Kanchipuram, making it evident that negotiations had failed.

After DMDK embarrasses AIADMK-BJP, will alliance talks continue?

Lok Sabha 2019
Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam had announced that the DMDK would join the AIADMK alliance. However, DMDK’s decision to approach the DMK for seats caught the AIADMK and BJP off guard.
In a huge embarrassment to the ruling government, the Vijayakant-led DMDK which was supposed to finalise its seats in the AIADMK alliance on Wednesday, approached the DMK in a last-minute effort to join their camp. Speaking to the media, shortly after members of DMDK visited his residence, DMK Treasurer Duraimurugan confirmed the request but stated that he had to turn them down because the party had finished distributing seats for the Lok Sabha polls. This meeting with the DMK leader came minutes before Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Chennai to address an election rally as well as launch various development projects. A large digital banner of DMDK chief Vijayakant was initially present on the stage, but had to be removed by organisers as the alliance was yet to be confirmed. The DMK had also attempted to negotiate with the DMDK but the party had made it clear then that it was leaning towards the AIADMK alliance. But now, the sudden change of mind exhibited by the DMDK, has caught both the parties off guard."Vijayakant's brother-in-law Sudeesh called me and said he said he wants to come out of AIADMK and come to DMK," Duraimurugan told the media. "He requested for seats but I said our leader (MK Stalin) is not in town and we have no seats to give. I told them they are taking a different tune all the time. Some leaders from the DMDK then came here. But I said the same thing - that there were no seats and that they were too late. I asked why they were coming from there now? But their answer was not convincing," he added. Shortly after the meeting with the DMK failed, the DMDK did yet another flip. Party leader LK Sudeesh who was closeted in a meeting with Union Minister and BJP leader Piyush Goyal claimed that talks were progressing with the AIADMK."We are now in the process of discussing how many seats we are getting and which constituencies. Talks will conclude by Friday," said Sudeesh. When questioned about his conversation with Duraimurugan, Sudeesh claimed it was not a recent phone call."We wanted all parties to come together and have talks like in 2014 for the alliance. But that didn't happen and we were upset. So, as DMK called me, I had this conversation with Duraimurugan," he told the media. But neither the DMK nor the AIADMK is buying his explanation. After the press conference, Duraimurugan commented acidly, "They talk to me like this, then they go say talks are still on with AIADMK. How can they be trusted? And how can we have talks with them?" According to sources in the AIADMK, the senior leadership is also furious. Especially considering that Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam confirmed that the DMDK was onboard the mega alliance on Wednesday morning."The party leadership is highly offended by this especially after the time we have invested and the kind of respect that we had shown the DMDK. As a party we have acknowledged the reality of this election and are only contesting from close to 20 seats. But a party like DMDK is not letting go of its ego," says an AIADMK source. "We have met them three times already. We understand that they may have concerns regarding the seats given and there are things to be sorted. But that doesn't mean they go to the DMK," he points out. So does this mean talks with the DMDK will end?"No, as of now we maintain our offer of four seats," say the AIADMK source. "Even if they have very little to offer us in terms of vote share, we would rather that it is on our side than that of the opposition," he adds. Political commentator M Bharath, who has been observing the DMDK for the past decade, points out that the party has only used its usual strategy. In 2011 too, they made then AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa wait till the last minute to confirm their alliance. Then in 2016, he says, they kept the People's Welfare Front guessing till the end."The DMDK's strategy has always been to delay an alliance confirmation till the very end so that their bargaining power will increase," says Bharath. "But this time, things have turned ugly for them and they stand exposed. But it is the AIADMK and DMK which are to be blamed for their inflated sense of importance. One leader after another was making a beeline to meet Vijayakant, from Union Minister Piyush Goyal, Congress' Tirunavakkarasu, DMK's MK Stalin and then Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam," he adds.  Despite this, however, the AIADMK is ready to keep alliance talks going. "We were all upset. But we can't go by emotions," says an AIADMK leader. "The political game is very different."

Police
The senior police officer was shunted by former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to an obscure post at the Mandapam camp in 2011 and suspended thereafter for his alleged involvement in the TNHB scam.
MS Jaffer Sait IPS, the senior police officer who had been 'shunted out' to obscure postings during the Jayalalithaa regime for his apparent links with the DMK, has been posted as the chief of the TN CB-CID, a move being seen as a significant positive turn in his career. Issuing orders on Wednesday, Additional Chief Secretary to Government Niranjan Mardi posted the officer, who was serving as Project Officer at the Tamil Nadu Police Academy, as Additional Director General of Police, CB CID(Crime Branch - Crime Investigation Department). The influential senior officer had served as Additional Director General of Police (Intelligence) between 2006 and 2011 during the DMK regime. The officer was known to enjoy the confidence of then Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and other top leaders in the DMK. However, in 2011, when J Jayalalithaa stormed to power, the cop was shunted by the AIADMK and given an obscure posting at the Mandapam refugee camp in Ramanathapuram district. He was suspended shortly thereafter for his alleged involvement in the Tamil Nadu Housing Board scam. The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption(DVAC) in the state had filed a chargesheet against the senior policeman for having obtained a prime plot in Chennai's Thiruvanmiyur area under the 'discretionary quota' by falsifying records. The much-publicized case witnessed the DVAC searching the premises of the top cop following which he was suspended in August 2011. Sait was charged with cheating and criminal conspiracy for reportedly enabling his subordinates acquire government housing in addition to pocketing a plot for himself, under his wife's name. In 2016, a Central Administrative Tribunal set aside the suspension. In 2017, the Madras High Court reinstated the officer, describing him as a “victim of prolonged suspension”. He was posted to the Tamil Nadu Police Academy in Chennai as Project Officer in June 2017. In 2014, the Aam Aadmi Party, as part of its national campaign against corrupt political parties, released the audio of a conversation purportedly taking place between DMK Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi and Jaffer Sait, where the latter reportedly asks the DMK leader to appoint him as Director General of Police. There were other tapes too in which the officer were allegedly in conversation with Sharad Kumar, then accused in 2G scam case and with Karunanidhi's staff. The officer’s elevation comes as a surprise to many in the state. However, sources close to the development tell TNM that Sait's posting to the CB-CID signals that he is in the good books of the police leadership of the state, and also the willingness of the Chief Minister to accept requests from senior officers. "Ahead of the elections, they want to keep officers happy," a senior officer in the Tamil Nadu police said. The recent transfer of CK Gandhirajan to Fire Services from a posting at Human Rights Commission, also indicated the Chief Minister's willingness to accede to requests of the officers, the officer pointed out.

Politics
PM Narendra Modi on Wednesday announced that Chennai Central Railway Station will be renamed after former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MG Ramachandran.
Hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the Chennai Central Railway Station will be renamed after former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MG Ramachandran, former Union Minister MK Alagiri has written to the PM asking that the Egmore Railway Station be named after his father and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi. In a letter to the Prime Minister, Alagiri also expressed gratitude for the PM’s announcement on Wednesday. “We are immensely and profusely happy to hear the news and announcement that the Honourable Prime Minister has named the ancient symbol of Chennai Central Railway Station in the name of Former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Bharat Ratna Dr MG Ramachandran. We are grateful and thankful for the same to the Honourable Prime Minister. In the same manner I humbly request to submit the Honourable Prime Minister to name the famous Egmore Railway Station in the name of Former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, the Legend always living eternal in the hearts of people of Tamil Nadu Muthuthamizh Arignar Dr M Karunanidhi and honour the great leader who lived and parted for the people of Tamil Nadu,” he wrote. The move to rename the iconic railway station has drawn both praise and criticism from many quarters. However, with the Lok Sabha polls expected to be announced shortly, it remains unclear if the move would be hampered by the Model of Code of Conduct that would kick in. Alagiri, who was expelled from the DMK in March 2014 following anti-party activities, has been attempting a comeback to politics along with his son, Dayanidhi. The former Union Minister for Chemical and Fertilizers served as the party's South Zone Organising Secretary, wielding influence from Madurai. However, after a succession battle with his brother and current DMK President MK Stalin, he was ousted after making unsavoury remarks against his father M Karunanidhi and the party. Soon after Karunanidhi’s death last year, Alagiri took out a rally in an attempt to display support he enjoyed from DMK party cadre.

Launch of book on Nadar history gives TN govt jitters? Permission for event denied

Controversy
World Tamil Sangam denied author T Lajapathi Roy permission to hold the event at the centre citing the participation of those who “contrary views on the government” and “caste and religious-oriented” function.
On a day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) Lok Sabha poll campaign at Kancheepuram in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday, the BJP’s key ally, the ruling AIADMK in the state, denied permission for a book release event at the World Tamil Sangam in Madurai. While the organisers of the book release event had been earlier granted permission, the U-turn came at the eleventh hour. The refusal to grant permission by the sangam, a government centre for Tamil research came two days before the launch and the reasons appear to be the title of the book - ‘Is Nadars’ history black or saffron?’, authored by renowned human rights lawyer T Lajapathi Roy, and the participation of prominent chief guests who are vocal critics of right-wing politics. In a letter addressed to Vaigai Law Firm run by Lajapathi Roy, the World Tamil Sangam Director Dr P Chandra said, “With reference to Roy’s communication on February 18, 2019, permission was sought only for a function regarding the release of a book on Nadars’ history. But based on the subsequent letter dated March 6, 2019, we hereby inform that permission for the event is denied as those who hold contrary views on the government are participating as chief guests and also because it appears to be a caste and religious-oriented function.”  Scheduled for Friday, the book was to be released by former DMK minister Poongothai Aladi Aruna and the first copy was to be received by Sampath Srinivasan, who has penned a book on Nadars’ struggle for equality. The other noted chief guests included anti-nuclear activist SP Udhayakumar, film directors Ameer and Karu Palaniappan, writer and activist A Marx and High Court advocate Prabhu Rajadurai. “It is not an obscene book. It is a Tamil book that traces the social history of a particular community. How can it be branded as something that whips up caste and religious feelings? These are merely lame excuses given by the administrators,” says lawyer Roy who has written books on various other communities of Tamil Nadu such as Dalits, Tribes and Jains.   Denial of the venue is a gross violation of Article 19 of the Constitution (which provides for right to freedom of speech and expression and right to assemble peaceably and without arms among others), he says. Roy points out that he paid Rs 40,000 in cheque last month to use the venue for the function and the staff, as per the procedure, had made the booking by making an entry in the register. Now, he is likely to file a writ petition challenging the order in the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Thursday. Recalling the Nadar women’s struggle to cover their breasts in 1812 and the subsequent temple entry authorisation law passed by the Travancore king, the community people’s failed legal struggle to rightfully enter into Kamuthi Meenakshi Temple in 1897, Sivakasi riots in 19th century when some of them were killed for their demand to enter into Viswanathar Temple, the book, according to Roy, points to the dangers of Hindu right wing politics and calls Nadars to abstain from it. Nadars constitute a significant vote bank in the southern districts and are a powerful business community. The BJP, whose Tamil Nadu leaders Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan and Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan hail from the community, is looking to tap the Nadar votes by fielding them as candidates in Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari constituencies.  “It (the disapproval to hold the event in World Tamil Sangam) is an outcome of (government) fear,” quipped advocate Prabhu Rajadurai, highlighting the order in his Facebook post. The World Tamil Sangam in Madurai was declared open by former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa through video-conferencing in March 2016, almost 35 years after its announcement by AIADMK party founder and late Chief Minister MG Ramachandran during the fifth World Tamil Conference here in 1981. Though recognised by the Tamil University, Thanjavur, as a centre for research, the venue, of late, is also used for activities remotely connected to Tamil language and history.  AR Meyyammai is a journalist with two decades of experience, has worked for The Hindu, The New Indian Express and Deccan Chronicle.

Obituary
The actor was 85 and was ailing from health issues for a while.
Veteran Tamil actor Gopalarathinam, popularly known as ‘Typist’ Gopu, passed away in Chennai on Wednesday evening. The actor was 85 and was ailing from health issues for sometime. The actor was a resident of Ayapakkam in Chennai. Actor Gopu was awarded his famous moniker because of his most memorable role as a typist in TS Seshadri’s stage play ‘Nenje Nee Vazhga’. In one interview, Gopu shares that while the play’s director had not originally intended to include him in the cast, Gopu voluntarily offered to play the role of a typist, having realised that the play did not include this character. “It was a play on the happenings inside an office and naturally they lacked a typist,” he says in the interview. Recalling this role in this play, actor-director Mouli tells The Hindu, “In the play even when the manager came, Gopu would get up wish him and sit down without interrupting the typing. He would be there in every scene but had no other dialogue. He was a very nice person. I cast him in my first directorial venture Ivargal Vithyasamaanavargal.” Actor Gopu made his film debut in 1965 in K Balachander’s Naanal. A commerce graduate from Mylapore’s Vivekanandha College, Gopu later appeared in more films including Adhe Kangal, Kasethan Kadavulada and Michael Madhana Kamarajan. Hailing from Manakal village in Trichy, Gopu had shared in an interview that his interest for acting began when he was in his fifth standard. Between 1955 and 1958, Gopu went on to act in over 600 stage plays, having joined actor Nagesh’s troupe initially. Gopu also appeared on television dramas such as Veetukku Veedu Looty and Thuppariyum Sambu. Gopu is survived by his wife, two sons and daughter. A library full of books and hearts full of love: Anitha’s family keeps her memory alive

“We need to start very young, so that what happened to Anitha wouldn’t happen to more people when they grow older,” says Anitha’s brother Maniratnam.

On March 5, 2019, S Anitha would have turned nineteen. Proudly donning a white coat, she would have chirpily walked into a medical college – if only her dreams and hard work had been realised. Instead, her memory was sitting as a statue in a library built in her honour, some 400 meters away from her modest home in the village of Kuzhumur. “She would have been the first doctor from Kuzhumur,” her brother, S Maniratnam says about the young Dalit girl who killed herself almost two years ago, disappointed that she couldn’t get a medical seat despite scoring high marks in her board exams, because of NEET. Maniratnam has now formed a trust in memory of his sister, and runs a library for children. “We call it Dr Anitha Memorial trust and Dr Anitha memorial library. What else could we do for her?” he asks. Maniratnam says Anitha was very fond of kids and would often babysit children in the neighbourhood. “But also, my interaction with many people including activists like Eniyan after Anitha’s death made me believe that I should start working with children. We need to start very young, so that what happened to Anitha wouldn’t happen to more people when they grow older,” he says. On March 5, the library hosted a screening of international films for children, to commemorate Anitha’s birth anniversary. Maniratnam says there are plans to do this on monthly basis. Work and play It is a refreshing sight in a village like Kuzhumur. At least thirty kids gather every day at the library, and after playing some games, settle down to read. The library has carrom boards and badminton racquets for children to play. Started in January 2018, the library was set up with support of many well-wishers who donated money and books. Since last year, the library has held many events. From organising literary celebrations for children, to summer camps, the library aims to intellectually engage children of Kuzhumur, most of who study in government schools. “I think these activities, besides reading, will instill confidence in them. Anitha was so focused just on her studies. It took her life away,” Maniratnam says. Anitha’s family is yet to come to terms with her death. There are days when Maniratnam randomly walks into the house, asking Anitha to give him food. And there are days when the family feels guilty about the pressure on her to study medicine. “We had no idea what she was thinking. Maybe she wanted to give up; maybe she thought the family was struggling too hard to give her something she was so passionate about. Maybe she did not want us to suffer. We had no clue. I was working in Chennai when she wrote to me once that no force can stop her from becoming a doctor. She was supremely confident about it. Her world came crashing down when it did not happen,” Maniratnam says. She was so studious that when the family insisted on having a puberty function for her in 2016, Anitha had resisted citing classes. The family managed to convince her. “In hindsight, I think she missed our mother. Just as we miss them both now. Probably, it would have been easier if only we had a woman – our mother or sister – to share our grief. Now we cannot even do that with each other,” he rues. Remembering Anitha Being the only girl with four siblings, Anitha was the bond connecting the entire family. The family says they struggled to even provide her a decent meal. “We still consume only PDS rice. But pappa had no demands. She had no particular favourite. She would just eat anything she was given, anything we had at home,” says her father Shanmugam. “I would often tell her that it is her responsibility to keep the family together, if ever there are fights among brothers. In her death, she still does,” Maniratnam says. ‘Not a private affair’ It was Maniratnam who resisted his father’s idea of having a memorial for Anitha close to home. “I thought it should be a private affair,” Shanmugam says, “But Maniratnam pointed out that the money that came for memorial, the trust, and eventually the library, was not a private thing. So it cannot be a private affair. He had a point there.” Shanmugam says the money that poured in after Anitha’s death was the kind ‘he couldn’t have imagined to earn, even if he had toiled till his death, till the toes on his feet were tied together.’ “It was so huge, and I was a mere labourer, yet I managed to educate my children,” he says, with a tinge of unusual pride. Reality hits him hard the next moment, “Of what use is all this? I toiled night and day, but she left us clueless.” Carrying forward Anitha’s legacy There is not a moment the family does not miss her. With Maniratnam’s wedding slated for March 17 at the library, they miss her more. “In our traditions, a sister is indispensable in wedding rituals. It’s a bond that is held together through rituals till death. At every step towards the wedding, we only miss her more,” Shanmugam says. The father finds it difficult to even hand out invites, because they carry Anitha’s image. “I couldn’t even stand in the library during her birth anniversary event. I was so emotional and had to move away. Whenever I give an invitation, people see her photo and start talking about her. For them, it is an enquiry, the impression of which will last for few minutes. For us, it is the pain of a lifetime.” The family however is determined to preserve Anitha’s memory, to carry forward her legacy. The library, they say, will survive, even when none of them do. The library will stand tall in memory of Anitha – a light that shone the brightest in their family and outside, even if for a short period of time. Thiruttani and Dharmapuri also recorded 40 degree Celsius, closely followed by Madurai, Karur, Trichy, Salem and Thanjavur.
In an announcement that would bring no relief for the people of Chennai and its surrounding districts, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the heat wave in parts of the state will continue till Thursday. A bulletin released by the IMD on Wednesday issued a heat wave warning to isolated areas in Chennai, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, Vellore, Dharmapuri, Namakkal, Salem, Karur, Dindigul, Tiruchirapalli, Madurai, Erode and Tiruppur districts. It also stated that the maximum temperatures in these areas is likely to be 3 to 5 degrees Celsius above normal. The Met department said that the maximum and minimum temperatures in Chennai city and its surrounding areas on Thursday would be around 36 and 26 degrees Celsius. The temperature is likely to dip on Friday. As of Thursday morning, Chennai’s Nungambakkam recorded 35.3 degrees Celsius and Chennai Airport recorded 37 degrees Celsius. Vellore sizzled at 40.6 degrees Celsius followed by Thiruttani (40.5), Dharmapuri (40.2), Karur (39.8), Madurai (39.7), Trichy (39.6), Salem (39.5) and Thanjavur (39.5). In contrast to the frost that engulfed Tamil Nadu’s hill stations last month, when the temperatures even touched the sub-zero levels, Kodaikanal recorded 21.8 degree Celsius, Uthagamandalam (Ooty) recorded 23.6 degree Celsius and Valparai touched 29 degree Celsius on Thursday morning. According to weather blogger Pradeep John, who goes by the name of Tamil Nadu Weatherman, a place is said to be experiencing ‘heat wave’ if the temperature deviates 5-6 degree Celsius from normal. In a Facebook post, he said that the interior districts of Tamil Nadu will definitely record mercury levels touching 40 degrees Celsius in the coming days, he ruled this possibility out for Chennai and added that the city will record its hottest day even without touching 40 degrees Celsius.

Meet the TN mom-daughter duo who cracked TNPSC together and got govt jobs

Santhi Lakshmi had always dreamed of higher education and a career. Four years ago, she began preparing for the exam with her daughter, Thenmozhi.
For almost four years, a mother-daughter duo have been preparing together for the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) exams. Now, 47-year-old Santhi Lakshmi and her daughter Thenmozhi, finally have reason to celebrate as they have cleared the exams and have both received state government jobs. Hailing from a small village near Theni, Santhi Lakshmi was only 15 years old when she got married. Barely out of Class 10, she focussed on adjusting to family life and supporting her husband, who was a farmer. However, her dreams of pursuing higher education remained deep inside her heart. “I have always wanted to study, ever since childhood. Circumstances made me get married and start a family, but my wish was always there. After marriage, I did work towards my dream, but the process was slow,” Santhi Lakshmi told TNM. After six years of marriage, she passed her Class 12 exams, following which she enrolled in a typewriting course and completed both the lower and higher levels. She took a small gap after that and then started her BA (Tamil) and graduated in 2010. Four years later, she suffered a personal loss after her husband died of a brief illness. A mother of three girls, Santhi Lakshmi eventually moved on with her life. She and her daughter Thenmozhi are currently pursuing postgraduate degrees in Tamil through correspondence courses from Madurai Kamaraj University. But this was not Santhi Lakshmi’s first attempt at the TNPSC exams. She has been a regular face at the TNPSC centre in Theni since 2012, and had cleared the exam three times before. But each time, she was thwarted at the counselling level since there were no vacancies. In 2015, Thenmozhi, now 28, finished her undergraduate degree and started preparing for the TNPSC at Thinai Payirchi Pattarai, a coaching centre with free classes in Theni. “My mom also used to come to classes with me. Since my grandparents were staying with us, amma could join the class only by 12 noon and had to leave by 3 pm since my sister needed individual care. So I used to fill her in on missed classes when I came back home,” says Thenmozhi.   At night, after the family had wound up for the day, Thenmozhi would narrate what was taught in class to her mother like a story. The next morning, when Santhi Lakshmi and Thenmozhi would have their tea, the mother would narrate the lesson back to the daughter. Santhi Lakshmi has also always pushed her girls to study. “Never has she said one word against educating us. She has always encouraged us to work for our studies,” Thenmozhi says. She adds that one sister is pursuing a BSc Maths, while the youngest sister is studying in Class 2. And for Santhi Lakshmi, she said her own parents have been a constant “pillar of support.” “Otherwise how do you think I can manage three girls at home and still study and work for my dreams? I love Tamil and that is why I chose to pursue my higher studies in it. I want to complete M. Phil and Ph.D and become a Tamil professor,” she says. On Monday, Santhi Lakshmi started her new job at the Tamil Nadu Health Department and will move to Veerapandi in Theni district soon. Thenmozhi is awaiting her posting location in the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department.

India’s first Chess Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand took to Twitter to congratulate Iniyan Panneerselvam on his achievement.
For Iniyan Panneerselvam, a 16-year-old from Erode city in Erode district of Tamil Nadu, chess has been more than just a game, it’s been a lifelong passion. The teen who has been playing chess since the age of 5, was conferred with the title of ‘Grandmaster’ on March 6. Following the announcement, India’s most well known chess player, Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand took to Twitter to praise the young boy for his achievement. “Congrats and welcome to No. 61 ! GM. Iniyan! In 1987 we were all wondering if we would have a GM and we closely watched each other in trying to get there first. Now it seems every other month we have a GM !!” he wrote on the social media platform. Viswanathan Anand is India’s first Chess Grandmaster and he achieved the norm way back in 1987. He is also a five-time World Chess champion. Congrats and welcome to No. 61 ! GM. Iniyan! In 1987 we were all wondering if we would have a GM and we closely watched each other in trying to get there first. Now it seems every other month we have a GM !! — Viswanathan Anand (@vishy64theking) March 6, 2019 “We always wanted him to be involved in some extracurricular activity. I introduced him to chess when he was just 5 years old and he immediately took a liking to it. I taught him the basics, but after a point he needed a proper coach, so I approached a man in Erode by the name of Thirumurugan, who taught Iniyan for a year,” says Panneerselvam, Iniyan’s father. However, it was after Iniyan competed and won several tournaments that his father realised how serious his son was about the game. He was guided by another coach based out of Salem, Tamil Nadu and went on to participate in several national and international level tournaments. He secured a gold medal at the 2016 Commonwealth Games held in Sri Lanka. In order to achieve the title of ‘Grandmaster,’ Iniyan had to meet certain guidelines put in place by the International Chess Federation (FIDE). In June 2018, he completed the last requirement and crossed an International Chess Federation rating of 2500. Following this, the 16-year-old has now been conferred with the title, becoming India’s 61st Chess Grandmaster.
